sonic1974 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Hey folks,I was just listening to one of my all time favs, Making Movies from Dire Straits. I love it! Some of the most expressive playing I've ever heard. Any fans of it out there?
gwayne Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Probably my favorite Dire Straits tune. Is there any better recorded Strat tone than on that song?
sonic1974 Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 Probably my favorite Dire Straits tune. Is there any better recorded Strat tone than on that song?Oops........I meant the whole album, but that's a stand-out track for sure. I think every song is killer, except the last track Les Boys, which is not too bad, but not up to the standards of the other ones.
Turdus Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Have not listened to them in years. 6 months back, I heard my son playing "Sultans" on his ipad. Not sure how he discovered them.
daa2202 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Brilliant record. Making Movies and the followup, Love Over Gold, are two of my all-time favorites.Superlative playing, singing, and songwriting on both.
burningyen Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I only have their 1st. I guess I should look into the others.
Disturber Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I have it on vinyl, but I haven't listened to Dire Straits in a zillion years, (as it feels...). After Money for Nothing I kinda felt they were un-listenable. Radio just wore them out. The Killers cover of Rome and Juliet was nice though. Felt like an fresh up to date version of the original. Listening to the track now it's clearly how much they (Dire Straits) stole from Bruce Springsteen back then. This song could've been a Springsteen tune no problemo. It's got everything from the piano parts to the overall theatrical arrangement.
G Man Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Go back and have a listen to Bob Dylan's Infidels Mick Taylor and Mark Knopfler on guitars and Sly and Robbie on bass and drums. Some great musicianship on that album that is often overlooked.
MCChris Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I only have their 1st. I guess I should look into the others.Yes you should. "Making Movies" is a 5-star album for sure IMO.Go back and have a listen to Bob Dylan's Infidels Mick Taylor and Mark Knopfler on guitars and Sly and Robbie on bass and drums. Some great musicianship on that album that is often overlooked.Great call. "Sweetheart Like You" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Brooks Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 i have a "best of", w/ sultans of swing & lady writer. but, no "comunicae" (sp?), which is another good tune.

I think MK produced Infidels, if I recall correctly. There was some kind of rush about the mixes because Dylan was going on tour, and Knopler said that it could have sounded much better.
Ethan Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I love this record...grew up hearing Dire Straits all my life via my dad and in turn Mark Knopfler became one of my biggest guitar influences. Infidels I have never heard of...Knopfler with Sly and Robbie?? I'm there!
gorch Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Lover over Gold before Making Movies for me. The first LP was trend setting, I think. LoG & MM are different animals for sure.
cmatthes Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Love that album.I spent countless hours back in the '80s learning a ton about dynamics by copping everything I could from Knopfler. That was a great leap forward from the bash-it-out barre chord stuff I learned as a kid. I also lost interest in the stuff after "Brothers In Arms" got so damned overplayed, but still dug the older Straits stuff.Great player, no doubt.
cynic Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I'm bucking the trend and will say I continue to enjoy Brothers in Arms even though it became *shudder* popular, and would rank it among the best complete albums in my collection.Out of their first five that's the only hole, not sure how I completely overlooked it.Thanks! Now I've got something to do today besides cleaning the garage.
MCChris Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Roy Bittan's piano adds a lot to this CD.I think my ex-bro in law still has my copy. Need to get it back from him.
burningyen Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Kind of a derail, but check out the guy the rest of the Straits guys picked to replace Mark Knopfler:
jwhitcomb3 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Making Movies is a great album. I don't think Love Over Gold has aged quite as well, but still good stuff.
Toadroller Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Knopfler's been quite busy over the last decade; his Sailing to Philadelphia and All the Roadrunning (with Emmylou Harris) are standouts and constantly in play around my house. Some very good song-writing and lyrics, and exploring a bunch of styles. Songs about Ray Kroc? Sure! Sonny Liston? Why not. And when Emmylou indicates I can plug her in and play her anytime... well.
jerseydrew Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Great album. Romeo & Juliet is my fav from this album
BubbaVO Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 MM is deserted island sort of material. The guitar playing on that album is so expressive and just sounds so good. The rest of their catalog, respect it, but don't love it the same way.
