Paul McCartney + Nirvana 12.12.12 what the hell is this?

Scroll to 6:43 (unless you want to watch the full video) and look at the little wooden box miked up. What is that and is that what Paul was playing through? Also notice that Pat Smear is playing some sort of Hagstrom! Very cool. I had an Hagstrom Swede in '79. One I wish I still had.

Dug it. Saw it live.

Just wished they would have played another tune or three...

Paul is playing a cigar box guitar - all the rage with the hipsters these days.... and Pat has been a champion of Hagstrom for quite a while. i absolutely loved the sound of mine but it had the tiniest, crampiest neck ever.

Loved Paul in front of Nirvana!!!

That Hagstrom Pat was playing has been around for a long time. It's a custom, It's not a production Hagstrom. If it was I would own one...

Thanks for the info. I have a friend who is making cigar box guitars. I'll have to point him to this.

Just one more thing I'm behind on. Thanks

On another note: how would you like to go through life with a name like Pat Smear? Just sayin'

I liked it. The slide stuff and the tune in general was not very Nirvana-like but that's ok. They looked like they were having a blast.

Pat Smear is a chosen stage name, so I'm guessing he likes it just fine.

Just more stuff I'm not in the know about. You people amaze me.

clearly the wooden box you referenced is not a cigar box guitar (listening, or reading, in this case, is a skill), but is likely some old, or retro, amp with a small speaker, that will get gritty like a tweed champ might, just that song/guitar.

Go look around the :45-1:20 mark that is a cigar box guitar.

I really liked it....it was a tune everyone could 'groove' to - at least they didn't try to play a Nirvana song, that just would NOT have worked.....much props to Paul, Chris, Dave and Pat!

Why not? I think Paul is more than capable of covering the range of Cobain and a dozen other singers out there, even at his age. The choice of song would just be the question, in other words, I wouldn't think "Teen Spirit" would be a good choice.

Either way, he's certainly held up a lot better than Roger Daultry, vocally. THAT was a God Damn embarrassment.

Again, READING IS A SKILL. Thorn points out that at 6:43, (not :45-1:20), there is a "little wooden box miked up".

If you look at 6:43, you'll see that there is a small amp or wooden cabinet , and that is what he's talking about, which may have been used for just that song/guitar combo. If he were asking about the obvious cigar box guitar, you don't have to point out a time, as it's in almost the entire video.

The little wooden miked up box at 6:43 the OP was asking about is not a cigar box

Does no one know what it is or has my point of the post been lost. Cynic posted a screenshot @ 6 minutes and 43 seconds. It looks like a one-foot square wooden cube to me. Some sort of amp? speaker? Anyone, Anyone?

It's a 1950s round screen tv ;)

As they said... They are just jammin'

Holy shit, the live SNL version, I can't believe sirPauls vocal range. He's incredible. And he's not "pitchy"
