django49 Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 ^^^^Film THAT one AFTER the kids go to bed!
Carl.B Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 This is exactly right; and whilst many out there subscribe to the misnomer that Hamers don't have any resale value, this is simply not true. There may be many out there that don't know what they have and sell dirt cheap, but I believe the source of the misnomer are typically forum trolls stirring the pot or are 'Gibby' fanboys etc. Especially since Hamer stopped production completely; and there were only about three completely hand made guitars a day that rolled off the bench to dealers while they were being made; finding truly minty Hamers is no easy task. Prices on these are climbing across the board, and for good reason.I don't agree. The "bad resale value" song has been sung ad nauseam but the members here (I being one) since the beginning. They don't have the resale of your comparably-priced Gibsons - still don't - and you don't have to be a Gibson fanboy to know that. The Newport 90 is the exception, not the rule.I totally agree with Kiz on this all you have to do is search Hamer on Ebay and sort by price highest first and see the same guitars that have been there for ever. Asking price and selling price are two different things.Carl B
kizanski Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Here's the thing when you're comparing Gibson and Hamer: You can't.Not because I feel Hamer is/was so much better than Gibson. That's not the point. The point is that Gibson and Hamer do not make similar guitars...and before anyone jumps all over me about that, allow me to explain...Gibson makes $750 (used) Explorers, and eBay is flooded with them. Hamer made Mahogany Standards that go for about $1000 used.Hamer made clapped out, bound and crowned, exotic wood Standards which command a pretty high price (too many options here to throw out a price). Gibson made similar Explorers, but no one goes to Gibson for the Explorers which look like...well...Standards. They go to Gibson for the vintage, cork-sniffer, Lawyer-Who-Is-A-Joe-Bonamassa-Fan, '58 Explorer reissues. Those go for $7,000.So, while the clapped out Standard goes for a couple of grand used, the guy who ordered it new probably paid 2 or 3 times that much. The same thing goes for Flying V's and Vectors.THAT is bad resale value.Of course, without too much research, you'll be able to find examples which prove the opposite of what I've detailed, but by and large, that is the difference between Gibson and Hamer, and why we always say that Hamer has a crappy resale value. Because they do.
Feynman Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Wait, someone paid $3K for a Newport Pro Custom?! Egad.
Joe G Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Wait, someone paid $3K for a Newport Pro Custom?! Egad. Mitch, was that you? I know it was a couple of years ago, but I bought this ebony boarded Newport Pro Custom for around half that price (photo courtesy Austin Mitch): Edited to add a photo - courtesy Mitch:
Feynman Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 No, no, no. The one you have is actually superb, not like those hideous red stupid-looking-gold-hardware-tailpiece things that embarrass the entire Newport family. $3K should have included a second, nice guitar in the price. Also, that's Austin's photo before he had joined the Wood Floor Photo Club. In any case, a free bump for The Shark's worthwhile quest.
burningyen Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Very tempting, but I'm honor-bound to follow the N90 dibs list since I'm a beneficiary.

Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 He's playing an early-'80s Neon Blood Spatter BC Rich Warlock with a Washburn Wonderbar retrofitted. Our little Mitch is growing up right in front of our eyes!!I hope you don't think I'm satisfied with this answer in the slightest.
bcsride Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I do think that Hamer prices are engine up slightly - across the board. Still bargains, but I think edging up. No, I don't have data.

And you're way off base.Pump the brakes and we'll help you find that sense of humor you misplaced.I've a great sense of humor. I also can recognize a dig when I see one.Oh, it was a dig, no argument there. You just can't take it personally. A guy with a great sense of humor would know that he was joking. But you're way off base about him being a troll. He has almost 10,000 post on this forum. A tremendous waste of time, sure, but he's hardly just passing through.Jury's still out about you, though.
cynic Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 No, he saw the pic of my guitar earlier in this thread. But it wasn't a dig at your particular guitar, all the Newport Pro Customs are hideous.
jisham Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 He was joking. We know that because we've been here forever. So yes. Slow down. I like your red one.
Feynman Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 gtrdaddy, please allow me to apologize then. In fact I had not noticed your post. There was absolutely nothing personal intended by my comment (aside from having been written by a person), so I'm sorry it came across that way. We have several long running HFCisms as does any established forum. In our little corner of the Internet, I am the President of the "Anti-Red, Anti-Gold-Hardware" club. It's a role I take rather seriously, and we have several longstanding members of the highest order. With that said, I actually once purchased with my own money a ruby red Newport Pro Custom with gold hardware, because Newports are among the finest guitars on the planet. I'm also on the board of the "Newports are Magical" council. I've owned more than one of them. I truly meant nothing insulting to you, but I can't apologize for exercising my duties against red guitars and gold hardware. Also, $3K is nuts, but that's a different discussion. --- Edited to add that upon rereading my post, it doesn't sound like a sincere apology, but it is. I was trying to inject some chatter into The Shark's thread to help him meet his goal. Some of us have hunted Newport 90s for years on end, and I hope he gets one.

kizanski Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Glad to take part in discussion with such a welcoming group of people. Now you're way off base again.Don't lump me in with a group of people who are welcoming.

Feynman Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 On the forum note, you will find much agreement as to typical behaviors in other ones, but the HFC is the finest little family on the planet, despite our dysfunctional mix (and Thorn).
dhuber Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I'd say I wish I had one. I'm completely uneducated on Newport's, but here's my advice. Buy a Newport Pro with all the trimmings and put SD Phat Cat's in it. You'll probably still have money left over.
Tres Aardvarks Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Wait, someone paid $3K for a Newport Pro Custom?! Egad. Mitch, was that you? I know it was a couple of years ago, but I bought this ebony boarded Newport Pro Custom for around half that price (photo courtesy Austin Mitch): Edited to add a photo - courtesy Mitch: This....this right here is damn sexy. Like Adriana Lima sexy! I know there's a lot of debate about the Newport 90s. Clearly I need not care as there's a dibs list a mile long and you need an AmEx Black to score one I'd gladly take one of these instead!!!!
cmatthes Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Gtrdaddy - you haven't been here very long, but I assure you, trolls have an extremely short life span on this board.
veatch Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Very tempting, but I'm honor-bound to follow the N90 dibs list since I'm a beneficiary. This, and even if not, I wouldn't sell unless I had something to replace it (like a Shishkov if he ever does such a thing...)Bump for a good man on an honest quest.
