MCChris Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Sometimes I wonder if fan reluctance to call bullshit on their favorite artists is a major reason artists stop growing. I am a fan of many artists, guitarists and otherwise...but I will never be so much of a fan that if they put out something bad I'll say "oh that's not as bad as I thought it would be."I think its incredibly cynical towards the fans that they would launch a tour 3 years after the release of new material (most of which was really old material). Its incredibly cynical they would tour with Roth sounding as bad as he does. Its incredibly cynical that Ed hasn't added anything new to his live solo since "316" (and lets admit that ain't exactly groundbreaking) which was about 25 years ago. However - if people are willing to pay for it, if they are willing to stand in the crowd and shout "Eddie, Eddie" as a guy plays the same thing he's been playing for 40 years (sometimes not so well now)....can you really blame the band?I won't disagree about the cynical aspect you describe; I'm left wondering whether Dave can't or won't improve his delivery. If it's the latter, than yes, definitely cynical.As for the rest of it: in your middle-age years and beyond, do you want to work as hard as or harder than you did in your youth? Do you want to amass as much cash as possible to maintain (or ideally improve) your lifestyle? My guess is that everyone on this message board would answer those questions with "no" and "yes" respectively. Our heroes are no different from us in that regard.

The band did nothing. Instead of doing that lousy Balance album they could have called Dave and, just like Joliet and Elwood, put the band back together again. They could have done A different kind of truth 18-20 years ago and given us some killer tours every year up until now.Instead they waited, got fat and lazy, and got that Wolfgang character in on bass. Who looks like he needs a pair of running shoes and a PT. His dad, an alcoholic, is more fit. The dude comes in on stage wearing a pair of baggy jeans and a worn out t-shirt. Again, I mean, WTF! You are in Van Halen kid, if you can't take it more seriously then that, then don't bother.

I was hoping there would be more rational discussion about this without things denigrating into _____ sucks or _____rules. I guess when it comes to favorite bands from one's formative years, emotion takes over. So....I'm kinda done with this topic. I agree with much of that post. We keep our bands in their boxes. Eddie tried to update his music after Sammy left and he got pounded for it. I crapped all over VH III. I shouldn't have. On revisiting it, I like some of those cuts quite a bit. Not much really new since.
oldskoolrulz Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 I for one LOVE these guys, goes back to getting VH1 on 8-track at my little local dive record shop and being totally blown away and not long after starting guitar lessons. I understand everyone's frustration with the band over the years but I honestly have to say I can deal with it. Was not a Van Hagar fan, never will be but I respect Sammy for his contribution to rock music. I hate that MA is not with them but again not enough to bash and moan and groan about the rest of the band And I did pick up the new box set on vinyl, here's a pic of it with my 1978 OG promo button that I have had since way back when
LucSulla Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 I like a lot of Van Hagar. I might not if I had been older (or alive) when the first album came out, but 5150 was the first album of theirs that I had. There are songs on all of Sammy's albums I dig a lot right up to the Twister soundtrack.

SSII x 2 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 just saw the Jimmy Kimmel performance. I think Eddie's playing is excellent - he's clearheaded. Nice and tight playing with Alex and Wolfie. But jesus fucking christ, DLR CANNOT sing, at all. His voice is completely, utterly gone. There were moments where he was speaking the lyrics in a manner that reminded me of William Shatner's performance of Rocket Man.What Van Halen needs to do is what Journey and Yes has done - find the best VH cover band singer on earth and hire him to sing.No need to slander Shatner--unless you've ever been one of his co-stars!

Then again, anyone who thought they could replace a fraction of Howard's ratings was delusional. And the show itself was awful. However, I think Dave got a very nice paycheck for only a few days' work.

Saw 3 Sammy VH b4 and enjoyed them too. BTW, one of my fav albums ever from his solo career is "Standing Hampton".BUT, the other night convinced me that I've seen them all I need to in concert.I deleted the recording after my wife and I saw it. Otherwise, I'd look it over again to really see what sucked. No one mentioned it yet but I thought Eddie was rushing things at times...just slightly off here and there. I also thought they were having audio problems as well and they can't be blamed for that. Anyway, I was not impressed!I did like their last album a lot, so I will be looking forward to new material from them...if they can keep it together. Their newest concert album won't be purchased by me.

DLR seemed to be off in his timing a lot, and he was only wearing the one in-ear monitor. Wolfie's a pretty good bass player, but he's not the vocalist MA is by a long shot. It really stands out on the live CD, which is hit an miss. I was actually pleasantly surprise by much of what I've heard of it, but some of it is pretty cringe-worthy (the backing vocals on "I'll Wait", for example).I haven't seen VH live since the 1984 tour, but they always seemed to be one of those bands where you walked out of the show talking about how great they are, then when you picked up a bootleg, you wondered if it was the same tour or not because it wasn't nearly as good as you remembered.
jettster Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 The Jimmy Kimmel show performance sounded way better than when I saw them live 5-6 years or whatever it was. I've been a fan since the first one came out and several of us couldn't even recognize what song they were playing 30-45 seconds in on many of the tunes. To make things more painful, tickets for four of us was around $600. Not ever again... Never did see them back in the day with Roth or Hager fronting but did see Roth on the Sky scraper tour. From what I remember, him and the band sounded excellent. Aging singers get the short end of the stick in most all situations. Still love all the old stuff, even the Hager version. I was listening to Balance the other day and forgot how killer that one was. Don't see how any VH fan cannot like this...

Disturber Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 They were actually pretty decent on Ellen. Watching it now. Dave is singing way better. Backing vocals sounds great on Dance the night away. Glad I watched this, It feels a little better now. Wolf still dressed as he is doing a sound check though.
