Biz Prof Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Seems I heard that David Coverdale gave him something like a million bucks to come record Adrian Vandenberg's guitar parts for the Slip of the Tongue album and the subsequent tour...That is true, in context, although I think that Vai did nearly all of his work by himself using the masters shipped to him at his home studio.

If he'd just stay away from the squeal shit he used to do and just croon this shit out, it would be fine. It wouldn't be 1978, but it would be fine. Wolfie and Eddie do the harmonies well enough to give the choruses the lift they need if Dave stays down in his register, and his melody lines aren't exactly out of The Magic Flute anyway. I don't find myself thinking, "God, he has no business doing this," as much as, "Why does he keep trying to do that? It's just fine without trying to hit all of those noted."The rest of the band sounds good. Dave still has his whole vaudeville shtick, and I don't see why if you dug it back in the day you wouldn't now. All he needs to do as a singer is sing this well enough that the audience can sing along, and I think he can if he'd just dial it down a notch.Which he won't. And it's kind of a shame. yep.i often wished robert plant would dial back his live vocal approach;this is why i love several of the tunes off of zep's recent "celebration day"better than "how the west was won" and "the song remains the same";the older plant realized he's not 23 any more and his restrained vocals really shine(i think the version of "no quarter" on celebration day is even better than the studio version).

Some great new songs being played this time. AC/DC could learn a thing or two from Van Halen's approach. Let Stevie pick the set list!

Maybe they were more restrained overall because they didn't want to fuck up so early in the tour, who knows. These new clips in this thread sound awful and it ain't just Dave-timing, pocket, and details are off all over. Since it came up, I've actually come to appreciate the DLR solo band of Vai, Sheehan, and Bissonnette more in recent years and I think a live lineup with those guys right now would (key word, instrumentally) destroy the Van Halen lineup that we are hearing in these recent clips in a live setting-playing, showmanship, everything. Seriously not trying to troll-I love the DLR era Van Halen and of course they made an undeniable mark on me as a musician and a fan of music, but man, when Chickenfoot sounds better live than VH, might be time to ride off in the sunset guys.....

Based on your comments and some others who attended that Charlotte show, I take it that the sound quality was good.I think I mentioned in a previous thread that when I attended the Greensboro show one or two nights after that that Charlotte show, the band's performance was quite strong. The FOH sound, however, was rather poor, with a lots of distortion obscuring the mix and particularly, Alex's drums. It didn't help that the canned keyboard track for "Jump" was off-pitch by a half-step and the engineering crew wasn't able to correct it before the song ended. Failures on the part of the supporting cast casted a pall over what should have been a stellar show.
