I've seen VH at least 10 times including 4-5 with Dave and even once with Gary Cherone and I will not be catching this tour.

We were rocking out to Tull, Led Zep, Eddie Money, Styx, Elvis Costello, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Queen, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest and Foreigner. And then we heard that horns fade out and that deep bass line start up counting time till Eddie Van Halen rocked our world with "Running with the Devil". Everything changed for us then. Van Halen Rocked our world! We went to the Black Sabbath concert on Nov 14 1978 in the Mobile, AL Municipal Auditorium and Van Halen opened for them. Van Halen just blew them out of the stadium. We had never seen anything like this before. Van Halen started me wanted to be a rock star. Just like I am sure they did for millions of kids at that time. VH1 and VHII were great albums. Women and Children took some time to sink in, mainly because of the change in the mix and the sound. Fair Warning was such a good album for me. I was learning bass and loved the bass work in that album. Diver Down came out when we were finally good enough to play their some of their songs. As 1984 came out I was still a huge Van Halen fan but things were definitely changing. Then came the Hagar days which were mostly good but we joked about how many songs had love in them. Could this be love, When it's love, Why can't this be love, is this love or women in love? Ain't talking bout love, and love walks in but don't tell me what love can do, cause I'm outta love again. So I saw VH with David at least 5 times, VH with Sammy three times. The shows with sammy were more polished but there was something Rock n Roll about VH with DLR. Women and Children first's concert was an amazing display of Rock and Roll bravado, drinking and extreme talent. Anyway, VH has been a major part of my life, why I play music, and the music I listen to. More power to them that they are still rocking. I am thinking about seeing them but it is a Sunday Night here in Tampa and I have to work on Monday....

I have nothing against Hagar, but I just don't dig his vocals, and as Muse already pointed out, the music got very sappy after he joined.But you all know there's a "BUT" coming...To say DLR has become a caricature of himself would be too kind.The excessively toothy smile, the gum-chewing, and - MY GOD! - the waist-high leg kicks all combine to form a very disturbing image of a man who's train has left the station. Without him....and I was half way through the first video before I realized that wasn't some freaky t-shirt he was wearing!My comparison/contrast paper for ENG 1110 at East Carolina University back in 1989 was titled, "From Metal to Manilow: The Evolution of Van Halen". I still have that paper somewhere in a plastic tote, mildewed cover and all. I think I cited no less than nine Hagar-era VH songs that contained sappy lyrics along the lines of "..when love comes around". And I think that they'd only made two albums with Sammy at that point.I liked Sammy Hagar with Montrose and as a solo act. I disliked him immensely as the frontman for Van Halen. A food-based analogue: I like vinegar-based pork barbecue sauce. I also like chocolate sauce. I'd not dare combine the two, as the combination would be offputting, to say the least. Kind of like a watered-down version of the best hard-rock band of the '80s.

But jesus fucking christ, DLR CANNOT sing, at all. His voice is completely, utterly gone. There were moments where he was speaking the lyrics in a manner that reminded me of William Shatner's performance of Rocket Man.What Van Halen needs to do is what Journey and Yes has done - find the best VH cover band singer on earth and hire him to sing.

Its like DLR hadn't practiced with them for a decade and had that goofy, dancey, stage - "I'm trying out for South Pacific - the musical", theatrical shit going on again. I won't pay anything to see that crap. I agree, if DLR sucks this bad already - the tour will be cancelled, DRT before they make it half way through the schedule. Done, done and done. FUCK.Say what you want about Sammy, but that crazy MF has an unbelivable vocal range and could sing all their songs and hit every damn note. Plus he makes some pretty good tequila.

It's pathetic in most regards. EVH's playing is the only silver lining in that shit parade.
MCChris Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 See, this is why all of the iconic '70s live albums were cleaned up in the studio: to recreate the experience of having been there, when your excitement and awe overrode any less-than-perfect singing and playing. Raw, unfiltered performances simply should not appear on product designed for mass consumption. But of course, bands get lambasted for having done that too (I want to scream every time some guitar nerd flies into a thread about Alive! or Live and Dangerous to educate the masses about how they're not really live albums) so it seems they just can't win in the eyes of their aging fan bases. As kids with our whole lives ahead of us and very few cares in the world, we saw and heard everything through rose-colored senses. As older folks mostly relegated to workaday lives that are comparatively much less exciting than those of our heroes, cynicism unavoidably sets in and clouds (or unclouds, as it were) our perception.In short, Dave has always sounded like this on stage. So maybe it's for the best that the 1981 Oakland show never sees the light of day in its entirety.

I am a fan of many artists, guitarists and otherwise...but I will never be so much of a fan that if they put out something bad I'll say "oh that's not as bad as I thought it would be."I think its incredibly cynical towards the fans that they would launch a tour 3 years after the release of new material (most of which was really old material). Its incredibly cynical they would tour with Roth sounding as bad as he does. Its incredibly cynical that Ed hasn't added anything new to his live solo since "316" (and lets admit that ain't exactly groundbreaking) which was about 25 years ago. However - if people are willing to pay for it, if they are willing to stand in the crowd and shout "Eddie, Eddie" as a guy plays the same thing he's been playing for 40 years (sometimes not so well now)....can you really blame the band?I was hoping there would be more rational discussion about this without things denigrating into _____ sucks or _____rules. I guess when it comes to favorite bands from one's formative years, emotion takes over. So....I'm kinda done with this topic.
