In the past when getting tickets to see them, I have been more concerned with Eddie's state of mind than anything else. He seems to be in a good place now, so I am looking forward to the show. Dave is Dave and apparently most of you complaining about his singing/stage act didn't get to see them back in the day. He was terrible back then too. I have always looked at him as a carnival barker, just there to stir up the excitement level a little more.

And that's 50% of his arsenal completely obliterated by whatever the hell he's on. Close your eyes and this sounds like any radio interview --- but watch it and you hurt for him. Dave could bring brown and green textures to songs that were sublime (especially compared to the singular texture Sammy brought - all Hawaiian tropics tutti-fruity flavor)

I'm not saying Dave is a tweaker, but I am saying I've had someone thrown out of a store for itching that much. Another note - If you go to YouTube and read comments, it is really shocking how much Van Halen crosses over into other cultures and ethnicities. Personally, I think that is super cool. Apparently, regardless of color, there were a helluvalot of people that loved that first Van Halen album.

That would be torture for the guy, because he clearly cannot remain still. Is it really drugs, or is he just a hyperactive person? It's almost as if he has Parkinson's or something (and I'm not making light of that, so please don't take offense). I first noticed his restless hands upon seeing the Downtown Sessions videos from their last album. Something clearly is not right with the guy. I sincerely hope it's not something too serious.

I think most guys put up with Dave back in the day cause he did and said things we all wished we could. Plus everywhere Dave was he had big breasted babes we could be easily distracted by. Front row at Van Halen shows were ... ummm... yeah. I was lucky to be up front at three St. Paul shows and a few Florida dates. I am still fascinated by all the gals in Dave's California Girls video. Edited to add: Face it gents, getting kicked out of Van Halen tripped the Vaudeville Dave into action as evidenced by this video. We loved it at the time but now? Not so much.

Maybe someone else can chime in but that was hardcore fiddling about. His lucidity makes me think coke.I once heard him do "Mercy Mercy Mercy" (Cannonball A.) all be it a little too fast and frantic -- but that's the kind of stuff I'd love to see him sing. The timbres and textures to his real voice are amazing. Stuff like Big Bad Bill - all awesome stuff.

Well, the lead singer of Steel Panther has the looks and the pipes....and was the vocalist for the best VH tribute band for quite a while... For a while, I was planning on grabbing 4 tickets on Saturday for the tour. I bailed. I recall how I felt after seeing them at MSG a couple of years ago and the Dave we're all talking about now was present in all his glory (admittedly, the second show the next night WAS a lot better overall, accoridng to reports and also the bootleg I downloaded). I don't like leaving a show....confused. The band is pretty much at the top of its game. But Dave wasn't and it appears to me he's gone way downhill in the two or three years since. I'm not going to drop my coin and drive all the way to Long Island or Hartford for a show I'm going to spend nit-picking the singer apart the whole time. I'm not even sure I want to pick up the new live album. I really couldn't care less about his sexuality. It's pretty obvious and inconsequential, IMO. And, yes, absolutely, HIS business only. I think, perhaps, the issue with it going unstated is how disconnected it is with the persona Dave put on for 20 years. For comparison's sake, I have/had a few Columbia press photos with Rob Halford posing with a Penthouse Pet around 1983 or so. And that was it. OTOH, you have Dave a la California Girls, the rumors about his penis being insured by Lloyd's of London against pregnancies, injuries, STDs, etc. It's comical now, looking back, but there may very well be some major issues going on with him maybe trying to reconcile the two polar opposite personas. I don't think VH fans, as a whole, could give two shits about it either way. Everyone just wants a solid performance on stage from him and the band. That's clealry not happening. I have no idea if I made any rational points there...
oldskoolrulz Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 As I stated in an earlier post I did pick up the new box set on vinyl and gave some of the live stuff a listen over the weekend. All in all I enjoyed it and at least on the couple of sides I listened to Dave sounded good and pretty much stuck to the original words and was in-time with the rest of the band. But then I watch these latest live performances, and I'm wondering why he is so far off on the lyrics and timing? what could have changed since 2012? hell i even listened to A Different Kind of Truth and he seems to have his s**t together there also, so now I am wondering if drugs, old age, etc are playing into it at this point. I saw them in 2012 when they came thru Nashville and was only disappointed due to my seat (on the floor in the back, which sucked) and what I paid, otherwise the show was a lot of fun to be at. Will I go again this time around? Since they aren't coming thru Nashville again I probably won't, just don't see me paying that much plus driving to another city which would add even more $ to the already steep ticket price.

princeofdarkness56 Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Yup, both VH performances on Kimmel and Ellen were pretty bad and not a good sign of things to come. DLR vocals on Kimmel was way off. His vocals were better on Ellen but his performance was just lame. VH should never become lame. They have too much of a history of being a damn good rock band to become lame. Seems the other 3 members still can rock but time for them to either get a new singer or fold the tent.

A much younger me was pretty enamored with the Vai/Sheehan/Bissonette combo back then, and I admit that I always enjoyed Dave being Dave... In these travels, however, I was surprised to stumble across this bi-lingual Dave! I made it all these years without ever knowing that he had re-tracked Eat Em and Smile in Spanish. I thought it was somebody screwing around, and was impressed how much they sounded like him ... but Wikipedia tells me otherwise- so it must be true! I can respect him being unable to hit the high notes, he's 62, not 26 but the timing was shocking. Damaged goods. Yet to him, every show is like hitting the lottery.I also wonder how much of his big hair back in the day was faked, like many bands I knew... it never looked real at the front. But I'd do that too now.As far as him being gay, don't know and never really thought of it (and don't care as long as he doesn't try to kiss me). I did wonder why Steve Vai wore a dress and pearls in the DLR video for Stand Up. Maybe Dave liked him that way...
