Disturber Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Timbuck 3Widely acknowledged for their impeccable guitar tone.Where are they now? Their future was not so bright after all.......
HAMERMAN Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I think it gets to a point where its no longer about sound, but more about status symbols. Now....where's my peavey backstage??? A "Backstage +" was my first amp. My ears still hurt when I think about that amp and I am sure it wasn't all due to my bad playing! BTW: I am definitely not a Peavey basher - I really like the 5150 and the Classic 30.
Studio Custom Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 FWIW the Dumbles I played were owned by Gene of Ultrasound in NYC. He allowed Tony Bruno to reverse engineer them and the Bruno Super 100 is a perfect clone. Many clones are by builders who have never been inside a Dumble, Tony has had access to at least six.
django49 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Still not going to be "cheap", but all things considered, this new one MIGHT take that D thing to another level.....http://www.fuchsaudiotechnology.com/amps/overdrive-supreme-II
veatch Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 My understanding is that the Ceriatone kits are based on a reverse engineer of the actual amps. Robben Ford had his in for service at a place (won't say where) and they reverse engineered it. If yer looking for a Ford style Dumble, there are plenty of clones to be had, and you can still afford to pay your mortgage.
Steve Haynie Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Dumble, meet Kemper. He wants to listen to you for a little while.
Studio Custom Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Hiward was using lots of Mouser stuff which were all +/- 20% of spec. The legend has it Howard use to order tons of parts, test each one to find ones that were exactly to his liking and discard the rest.
Biz Prof Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 On a similar note, I just noticed this posting on the Raleigh CL: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/msg/5003024617.html...because we all know that an overdrive pedal will fetch $2,500 on the used gear market. As my friend Toadroller would say, "The market will speak..."
JustKid Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Got a tip from the guy, who knows the owner, couple of weeks earlier, that it's possible even to get a good discount...like 10%. I felt soooo much better from that day on, but still decided to get "Belov" instead
cmatthes Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I love the fact that this amp will likely end up in some guy's expansive basement gear room, where he will invite his friends over to oooh, ahhh, and hack their way through "Smoke On The Water" and "Crossroads". There will be hours of discussion over rare scotch, commenting on the unmatched tone this amp generates, and how fortunate they are to feel the mojo down to their very souls.
django49 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 ^^^^ But can he even get it home in his Ferrari? Deal breaker for me!
Cary Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 I've been tossing and turning all night thinking about it, and have decided if I can move my Superchamp XD for $89K, I'm going to go for it. Any takers?
Never2Late Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Eric Clapton recently bought one from Gruhn's, and is using it live. The guy pays cash for $800,000 bespoke Ferraris, I think he has the scratch for a $90K amp....he's the type of buyer they're looking for. Ebay is just the vehicle to 'get the word out'. Note the serial-number is 'blacked-out' in the pics, so I suspect the seller is wanting to field phone-calls and deal directly with a blue-chip buyer in-person. Stevie Ray Vaughan had one or two, and it was an integral part of his live and recording rig. He probably got his for $3K (new) back in the early 1980s. Bear in mind, there are only 300 of these amps in circulation. If there wasn't "tone" in these things, Fuchs, Two Rock, and all the other wannabes wouldn't be spending months in the Engineering Cave trying to copy the circuit and sell it to you. Clones are copies - if your ear can't tell the difference, that's cool. Some rockers blew-out their ears on Marshall stacks long ago so none of it matters.

bcsride Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Damnit, stop picking on me. But in my case it is Hamers, Mesas, one off things, and craft beer. But I play as equally poorly as those guys with better gear and expensive hooch. I even play poorly in public.

T-51Fred Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Anyone try Phaez amps? I'm intrigued by his work, but never seen one in the flesh. Prices aren't dumble at all.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 For some reason, the intro on this song really sounds like a Dumble to me.But for all I know, it could be a solid state Gorilla practice amp:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajFItOic1Ko
cmatthes Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Strat with a phaser - so heavily processed, it could be anything...even a Rockman, I highly doubt it's a Dumble though.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Strat with a phaser - so heavily processed, it could be anything...even a Rockman, I highly doubt it's a Dumble though. There was something about the character of it that reminded me of a YouTube Dumble demonstration. Not like a YouTube video is a good representation of how a Dumble should sound, right?I do know Dan Huff likes his James Tyler guitars, apparently with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and classic stacks in the middle & neck. I've heard him connected to Bogner XTC, Hughes & Kettner, Peavey 5150 and Classic 50s. So just call me Jon Snow.
The Shark Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Anyone try Phaez amps? I'm intrigued by his work, but never seen one in the flesh. Prices aren't dumble at all.Randy is a great guy to deal with. I contacted him and he called me the next day. I ordered the DaisyCutter with two EL-84s. I told him I wanted a loop he told me that he'd get working on it later that day! Best "brown sound" amp I've owned. Don't have any experience with his "D" design. For those that don't know, the schematics for some very famous Dumbles are available at Amp Garage and all over the net. Available boutique "D" amps are available from Fuchs, Two Rock, Bruno, Bludotone and other lesser known builders. If you want to try one on the cheap, you can get the Ceriatone "Overtone Special". And there's the Ethos pedal, the Hermida Zendrive and lots of other pedals that, supposedly, nail the D-tone. The Ethos is killer. The Hermida is good too. Listen to Robben Ford's album "Talk to Your Daughter". Then, tell me what you think.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZXa5NC1YM0
