Provided you paid cash. Interest rates were double-digit back then.:ph34r: Of course, you coulda got a Chrysler Cordoba with 'rich Corinthian leather' back then, too! B)

My 1981 was $629 new off the rack, but it was a lowly 2 pickup version at the time. It has since been turned into the 3 pickup variety...

I like LP customs... one of the few guitars I still regret not having bought 4-5 years ago, was a 2003 butterscotch flamed maple custom... played one in a shop last year, it was on consignment, daaamn, that custom KILLED!

Bought a 72 Deluxe in 85 for $235. This was in the days of super strats. If it didn't have a wiggle stick, nobody wanted it. My gain. :). I miss having a Les Paul, but not at the prices it takes to get one these days...

How about that Black '79 LP Custom reissued with a rear "Corrinthian Leather" body pad protector as the

"Ricardo Monteban Model?"

Now THAT would be some Henry J. Gibson marketing :)

A Deluxe IS a Les Paul... so you are not missing anything.

Nah - I sold it a good 10 years ago, so I am currently in a Paul-free environment...

I did get more than $235 for it if I recall correctly.

As long as you have

As long as you have a few set neck Hamers at hand, you are in Paul territory ;)

I paid $565 (with case) for a brand new '78 Les Paul Standard in 1979.

Saved my pennies working a dishwashing job (I was in high school) to afford it.

Still have it, and didn't do too much of the "customizing" we'd do back then. Put Schaller tuners on it, installed a phase toggle between the pots, and eventually a Kahler locking system behind the nut.

All of that crap is gone and I had the Gibson Repair Shop fill the hole from the toggle. They did a great job, hard to tell it was ever there.

Aside from being a bit heavy (9lbs 7oz) and being from the dreaded Norlin-era, it is a nice guitar. Played the hell out of it and it still has the original frets.

I don't know why the buyer felt the need to de-tune the strings. Wouldn't that cause the neck to back-bow after all those years?

Wait don't Norlin era guitars suck?...

Paid $295 for my factory second LPC in 1984.

The mid-80s (Pre Slash) were a great time to dig Les Pauls.

I bought what may be the best Les Paul I've ever owned (out of many) - a 1978 Deluxe in Ebony, stamped "Second", but just an all around brilliantly made guitar. It set me back $200, or two night's tips in the summer of '86. I traded that and a double bound 1980 Rickenbacker 360 for a custom ordered Hamer Standard a few years later.

I've had a few LPs during my day. I really like the one I have now, a '76 Standard/Deluxe (headstock sticker says "Deluxe" but its stock full-size humbuckers were from the factory, and a "standard" TRC). It's a fret job away from being the one I stick with.

Cheapest: $450 for my first LP, an '84 Custom, in '91 or '92, can't remember.

One that got away: '82 30th Anniversary goldtop. Like an idiot, I turned in to two guitars in a trade and neither stayed long.

Heaviest LP ever: I had a black '79 Standard that felt like marble under the paint, so much that LP junkie guys would play it and go "now THAT is a heavy Les Paul." Never found out the actual weight until I sold it. I took it to one of those shipping stores and before we packed it up, I put it on the official postage scale out of curiosity. I don't remember the weight to the ounce, it was years ago, but I remember it was 13 pounds and some change.

I was a poor teenager in 1977 and could not afford the new LP Custom @ $625. or the Standard @ $575. so I had to get a Deluxe for $525. brand new with the protector case. Got it at Orlando Music on Colonial Ave. Natural Top, mini hums, easy 10 1/2 lbs. I really wanted the Tobacco burst at Abney's Music, but my brother talked me into that one, kinda glad I did or I woulda been itchin to rout it out for full sized Dimarzios (Like Ace of course) ... lol

That's what I have - '76 LP Standard with the "Deluxe" sticker on the back of the headstock. $350 in 1979.

Ah, the good old days in the early-mid 80s, when no one seemed to want a Les Paul. Around LA it seemed like you could pick one up every other week or so, usually in excellent condition, sometimes virtually unplayed, for $350 or so. (IIRC, the Deluxe was a whole $325). Of course, ES-335s were not infrequently available for the about same price, not a lot more for ES-347s.

Those were the good old days......
