mrjamiam Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Heard a lot of them on the FM radio in Nashville in their time, until Mr. Waite tried the solo thing and their keyboard player joined some other band to replace the one that had left them. Maybe you'll remember the hits:
mathman Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Waite was a great voice. Really liked The Baby's at the time.

a.bandini Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I remember hearing this around 1980 on WNEW (102.7). In its way, it was great.
Steve Haynie Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 The Babys were over by the time I got into them, but I knew a couple of their songs before I knew the band's name.
tommy p Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 My band is currently doing Midnight Rendezvous, but it's definitely one we're doing for ourselves and not the audience. This is one of my favorite John Waite-sung songs, and one I've always wanted to do in a band:
bubs_42 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 One of the songs I brought into the band was Midnight Rendezvous. Can't wait two more weeks until the gig.
Steve Haynie Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 In 1990 I saw Bad English in a hotel lobby in Atlanta but did not talk to them. The same night Animal Logic was playing a show at The Cotton Club, and they were the entire reason for my trip that afternoon.
RobB Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I like a lot of their catalogue. Prefer them as a four-piece, but Cain was a good addition. Michael Corby rents a flat from a friend of mine in Scotland, LOL!

The Shark Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 My band still plays Change (JW), True Love and True Confessions and She's my Girl. But only on occasion. The crowd usually thinks the last two are originals!
Dana_V Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Looking For Love -- track one, side one from the first album -- is still my favorite. I remember seeing them do it on The Midnight Special in 1977. Later, my band covered Head First (I thought we did a pretty decent job of it) and, like every other bar band at the time, Midnight Rendezvous.
mc2 Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Saw the original Babys live. Decent band. Waite has a cool quality to his voice. Would love to own his Babys Zemaitis bass...too bad it's now a crazy price.
wil50n Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wally Stocker, great guitarist. Heavy Kossoff influence in his playing. Big drums from Tony Brock, and Waite was a great bassist.

That's Neil "Mr. Pat Benetar" Giraldo and it kicks freekin' ass. There was a move on to add some period-correct songs to our '80s cover band's annual reunion gig this year, and the drummer suggested we add "Change". I was psyched, especially after I checked out the live version on YouTube, with Earl Slick on guitar (and filmed at The Tower Theater in Philly, my favorite place ever to see a concert. Come to think of it, I saw Waite there a tour or two prior, right after "Ignition" came out.) I was really looking forward to following our John Waite song with the INXS tune we've always done, so it would be Change/Don't Change. Sadly, the singer backed out this year so there's no reunion show. I guess we should stop calling it our "annual reunion" and instead say "sporadic reunion". Here's the Tower Theater "No Brakes Band" video. The band kills, but the '80s fashions are truly cringe-worthy. Watch at your own risk. Guitar trivia: That's the same SG that Slick played (again, at the Tower Theater) on Bowie's "David Live" album. I guess in the '80s, it seemed like a good idea to fill in a pickup cavity and paint a brown '60s SG baby blue. I had almost forgotten what this thread was about, but I've got it back now... Babys.

He does the best stuff on Rick Springfield's break out album, right? The funny thing is, I don't remember that many good guitar solos from the Benetar songs.
Rich_S Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Giraldo produced the "Ignition" album and played guitar on "Mr. Wonderful". He played some great solos on some of the earlier Benatar albums. Way back when, I worked long and hard to learn them. Two of my favorites are "Promise In The Dark" and "Precious Time". Giraldo was the first guitar player to appear on MTV (in the "You Better Run" video) and the guitarist on Billboard's #1 record (Springfield's "Jessie's Girl") IN THE SAME WEEK, August 1, 1981.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Yeah, I just went and did a little research. Nothing worth listening to from Love is a Battlefie.d Hit Me With your Best Shot: Meh, but it *really* sounded like Jesse's Girl. I never realized how close they were. Then "You'd Better Run". Wowsa. Great guitar work on that one. Then I listened to Precious Time. Again, good work. Kept thinking, "This is the kind of guitar playing I like now. Wish I'd dug into the Benetar catalog before."
