RIP, ma'am.

I first paid attention to Tina Turner when she was the Acid Queen in Ken Russell's version of "Tommy".  I had a magazine with pictures from the film, and those combined w/the way she sang that song scared the hell out of me.

In its heyday, the Ike & Tina Turner Revue was a relentless. pretty-much-one-of-a-kind presentation that took no prisoners. They performed at my college in 'early 72. One memorable event was two of the Ikettes fighting as the show ended.

Soon afterwards What You Hear Is What  You Get was released, and had the same song list, from what I can recall. It still holds up, and "I've been Loving You Too Long", with its blatant sexual sound effects, is still hilarious. IMO that's the Ike & Tina album to have.

Unlike many popular music stars, Tina was a decent thespian when she gravitated towards acting (^^^). YMMV

I got to see her in 2000 (with Joe Cocker opening)... Not my normal jam, but both put on a great show. Glad I got to see them, both are gone now. RIP

When I went to Live Aid in Philly, she and Jagger performed together.  She'd of course had hits and I enjoyed the music, but she had more presence than him and I couldn't take my eyes off her.  That was the day I really became a fan.

i stand corrected; the concert was in the spring of 1971; here are photos scanned from the college yearbook for that annum. The other concert during the same quarter was Kenny Rogers & the First Edition. That one was well done, too, albeit a completely different genre.

Was running errands last night, turned on the XM Radio and my favorite R&B station was playing a load of Tina's songs. Reminded me of the times my late wife and I doing road trips listening to her two favorite female singers, Janice Joplin and Tina Turner. Going into the stores with bloodshot eyes, then parking in the garage and listening to the last song completely before killing the engine, a tear ran down my face thinking of those road trips.

I miss my Queen. So, I raise a toast to you Tina for the fine memories you gave us. R.I.P.

According to Frank Zappa,  "I wanted to put some back-up singers on the thing, and the road manager who was with us at the time checked into it and said, 'well, why don't you just use the Ikettes?' I said, ''I can get the Ikettes?'' and he said ''Sure''. But you know what the gimmick was? We had to agree, Ike Turner insisted, that we pay these girls no more than $25 per song, because that's what he paid them. And no matter how many hours it took, I could not pay them any more than $25 per song per girl, including Tina. It was so difficult, that one part in the middle of the song ''Montana'', that the three girls rehearsed it for a couple of days. Just that one section. You know the part that goes ''I'm pluckin' the ol' dennil floss''? Right in the middle there. And - I can't remember her name, but one of the harmony singers - she got it first. She came out and sang her part and the other girls had to follow her track. Tina was so pleased that she was able to sing this thing that she went into the next studio where Ike was working and dragged him into the studio to hear the result of her labor. He listened to the tape and he goes, ''What is this EDITED ''? and walked out.
I don't know how she managed to stick with that guy for so long. He treated her terribly and she's a really nice lady. We were recording down there on a Sunday. She wasn't involved with the session, but she came in on Sunday with a whole pot of stew that she brought for everyone working in the studio. Like out of nowhere, here's Tina Turner coming in with a rag on her head bringing a pot of stew. It was really nice.”

Saw her once in the 00s, I think. She had been a fantastic performer and singer. Very charming. RIP!

I'm wondering if the guitarist on the left might be Jitterbug Webb. He was a San Antonio legend and played in their band for several years.

^^^If it's any help, that was a Guild Starfire he was playing

When I knew him, he played a Black Les Paul.

This photo was gifted to me by Fred Tiekin's estate.  Fred's band "Freddie Tieken and the Rockers" did some gigs with Ike and Tina.  Ike looks like he has a second gig with the Rat Pack.
