Willie G. Moseley Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 All hail the Vanilla Fudge! Omnipotent innovators of unique cover songs, beginning ca. 1967! If I had to pick just one or two, I'd choose the slam-bang version of "Shotgun" and the medley of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and "Fur Elise"...they were that versatile in their time. And I should know this but didn't Paul Simon actually write "59th St. Bridge Song" and Harper's Bizarre had the hit (which might have been heard before S & G's version)?+1 on Priest's "Green Manalishi"Santana's "Black Magic Woman"-another Peter Green cover; I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one previously...`"We Gotta Get Out of This Place"-Blue Oyster Cult"Sunshine of Your Love"-Rotary Connection"This Wheel's On Fire"-Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & the Trinity"Summertime Blues"-Blue Cheer"I Want Candy"-Bow Wow Wow"Fanfare for the Common Man"-ELP"Satisfaction"-Devo"Higher and Higher"-Jimmy Hall (on one of the Volunteer Jam albums)"I've Got the Music in Me"-Heart"Stop! In the Name of Love"-Hollies"I'm A Man"-Chicago Transit Authority"Hush"-Deep Purple"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"-Carpenters (honest!)"(All I Have To Do Is) Dream"-Nitty Gritty Dirt Band"Lean On Me"-Michael Bolton (it's embarrassing to 'fess up to liking this one)"Atlantic City"-The Band "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar"-Cmdr. Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen"Can't Help Falling In Love"-Corey Hart"It's A Small World"- Andy Kaufman & the B Street Conga Band"Ain't That A Shame"-Cheap Trick"The Man Who Sold the World"-Nirvana"The Mighty Quinn"-Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Ethan Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Man everyone knows that the best cover ever is Manfred Mann and the Earth Band covering Bruce Springsteen's classic Blinded by the Light!
DavidE Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 ""Lean On Me"-Michael Bolton (it's embarrassing to 'fess up to liking this one)"I'll bet you celebrate his entire catalog.......Not sure on who wrote 59th St. Bridge Song. It would be interesting if you were right! I just assumed the other version was the original.Nobody mentioned Hazy Shade of Winter by The Bangles... actually I thought it was pretty good. How many of us know the original S&G?We missed a HUGE one:The Blues Brothers - every song they did. Seriously kick ass band with not as talented front men. :-) I often think of their cover versions before the originals.
kenjones Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Patty Smythe's cover of Tom Wait's "Downtown Train". I was watching the music video of this song thinking how much I did not like Patty Smythe or Scandal but thinking "this is a really good song!". Later I learned later that she didn't write it.

JohnnyB Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 All hail the Vanilla Fudge! Omnipotent innovators of unique cover songs, beginning ca. 1967! If I had to pick just one or two, I'd choose the slam-bang version of "Shotgun" and the medley of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and "Fur Elise"...they were that versatile in their time.Well I like Vanilla Fudge's take on their most famous cover, "You Just Keep Me Hangin' On." Really showed what could be done with/to a Motown song. Beatles' cover of Chuck Berry's "Rock 'n' Roll Music."Just about any Rod Stewart cover, including "Twistin' the Night Away," "I Think I'm Losing You," Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," and a zillion R&B tunes. I like how he does Motown tunes better than Motown.Pearl Jam's cover of "Last Kiss."
Disturber Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Nothing compares to U - Sinead O Connor (covering The Family & Prince) Betcha by golly wow - Prince covering the Thom Bell song performed by The Stylistics My Way - Sid Vicious covering the Italian classic made famous by Frank Sinatra Police and Thieves - The Clash covering Lee "Scratch" Perry and Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" You Were Always On My Mind - As covered by the Pet Shop Boys Where Did You Sleep Last Night? - Nirvana covering Ledbelly Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters doing Pink Floyd Hurt - Johnny Cash doing NIN Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash doing Depeche Mode Love Hurts - Gram Parsons & Emmy Lou Harris doing that famous Bryant song And my favourite cover album: Return of the Grievous Angel with covers from Pretenders, Cowboy Junkies, Evan Dando, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Gillian Welch etc. Buy it, it will bring tears to your eyes.
Willie G. Moseley Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Even though I don't particularly care for either band, (apparently-still-composed-totally-of-non-original-members) Molly Hatchet and Great White have sonically great songs on a new Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute album. MH covers "Freebird" w/ Help from Charlie Daniels (?!?) and the guitar tone on GW's version of "Saturday Night Special" slays. Can't say those are worth the price of admission, though, so caveat emptor.
serial Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Ooof-how could I have forgotten Sid's "My Way"?! We cover that one now and it kicks.Another fave is Social Distortion's cover of "Ring of Fire". Classic.
santellavision Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 The Boneshakers version of James Brown's Cold Sweat". Big Head Todds's version of JLHooker's "Boom Boom"
darc Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Can't top All Along the Watchtower, but I like these:- Tears for Fears' Mad World covered by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews- NIN's Hurt covered by Johnny Cash- Lennon's Working Class Hero covered by Tin Machine- BOC's Godzilla covered by Racer XWell-known covers whose originals are far superior: China Girl, Lake of Fire.
Steve Haynie Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Pearl Jam's cover of "Last Kiss."Uh, you may want to rethink that one. It sucked! Eddie Vedder could not hit the notes, and it floored me that anyone would release that-- especially on the radio. Had that been a demo it would have been thrown out and never considered as serious. Last Kiss as recorded by Pearl Jam was definitely not the best cover tune of all time.
paults Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 You've already mentioned the classics that come to mind, but I recently heard a CD of very fun punk covers by "Me First and the Gimme Gimmes". It was like The Replacements playing in a hotel lounge : )
Willie G. Moseley Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 "Tequila"-The Tony Levin Band. Just about unrecognizable until you heard the spoken-word title (which is more of a mutter on this version), then it all makes sense.
Disturber Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I totally forgot this one...: Eddie Hazel's cover of Californa Dreaming, the best recording ever of that song. From his (only release) album Game, Dames and Guitar thangs. Eddie was ranked as 43 on the list of Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time, what ever value that has. He was great though, no doubt about that.
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Lou Reed's version of "September Song"Elvis Costello's version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"-Jonathan
JohnnyB Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 My Way - Sid Vicious covering the Italian classic made famous by Frank SinatraAlthough made famous by Sinatra who was of Sicilian extraction, "My Way" was written by Paul Anka, who was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, of Lebanese Christian parents. But I agree, I love Sid Vicious' version. Also like Al Green's cover of "I Want to Hold Your Hand."
blackfbiv Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Love Hurts was around long before Nazareth, but they own that song now! Cher might disagree. (Man, did she put a stake through the heart of that tune or what?!!!) My fave cover is by a band called 'Kilt' an Irish folk sounding outfit that covers Kiss' "I Was Made for Lovin' You" I think it's far superior to the original. Dion
