Hamerhack Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Ee bah nezEe bah nayeye bah nezEe ban yeth?Apparently Ibanez was a Spanish company and the Japanese owner, who had imported Ibanez guitars, bought the name after the original factory was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War ("The Skeletons of Quinto" comes to mind. Goodnight everybody!)

Armitage Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 "EYE bah nez", is correct.Seems to be the most common "English" way of saying it.
tbonesullivan Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 proper Spanish pronunciation is:EE bah nez. However I'm not sure it is even a proper Spanish name. It's just something that a Japanese company made up for the US market. Most people I know say "EYE BA NEZ"

JohnnyB Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 "EYE bah nez", is correct. wut?? i thought it was EEE BAH ñez Ibañez...imitating a Spanish name....like Muñoz or Nuñez I've been pronouncing it bad all my life Thanks for the info!! Technically, you've been pronouncing it correctly, because that is how Ibanez is pronounced as a Spanish name, and is actually spelled Ibáñez--ee-Bahn-yez (second syllable accented). Current pronunciation, Eye-bah-nez, is what the name has become--at least stateside--as the pronunciation without any frame of reference became Anglicized. proper Spanish pronunciation is: EE bah nez. However I'm not sure it is even a proper Spanish name. It's just something that a Japanese company made up for the US market. For real Spanish pronunciation, see above. Yes it is a proper Spanish name, as this MLP player can attest. Plus, I saw him in a game and it was pronounced ee-Bahn-yez. Furthermore, a Japanese company did not "make up the name for the US market." From Wikipedia, but I've seen the info elsewhere as well: The Hoshino Gakki company began in 1908 as the musical instrument sales division of the Hoshino Shoten, a bookstore company. The Ibanez brand name dates back to 1929 when Hoshino Gakki began importing Salvador Ibáñez guitars from Spain. When the "Salvador Ibáñez" workshop was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, the "Ibanez Salvador" guitars were no longer available, so Hoshino Gakki bought the "Ibanez Salvador" brand name rights and started making Spanish acoustic guitars in 1935, at first using the "Ibanez Salvador" brand name, and then later using the "Ibanez" brand name. So originally the parent Japanese company was distributing guitars of Spanish origin from the Salvador Ibanez company, and at that time the name would have been pronounced ee-Bahn-yez as well. But if you tried to pronounce Ibanez the guitar in that way, people would look at you funny, so in that context it's Eye-bah-nez.
David B Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 "EYE bah nez", is correct.I always thought it was this. If I pronounced any other way, I would feel like a dick.
serial Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I had a bass player who pronounced "Epiphone" like "epiphany".
thecajunboy Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I had a bass player who pronounced "Epiphone" like "epiphany".Sure he wasn't talking about Epifani?
Turdus Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 It's actually pronounced "Lawsuit", and this is the only one you'd ever need:
cmatthes Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Strangely enough, we have not been contacted by RIC's legal team to take that pic down!Cool bass. The bassist Serial and I played with when we were in 10th grade had that exact same model/finish bass.

Actually, you have been right! However I'm not sure it is even a proper Spanish name. Oh, yes it is. veatch Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Yes, JohnnyB is right, but i agree with David B: Anything other than Eye-ba-nez would make me feel like this:Cool Whip
