Possibly starstruck by which famous guitarist?

Love many guitar players, but I think I would be starstruck just by one player in the world: Brian May!

Well, a second candidate who might also get me in that "fascinated-by" status is Kai Hansen, if I ever meet him in person.

It's worth mentioning I'm a very cocky and proud person, but I used to spend hours with my brother listening to the two guys above when we were teens. Nostalgia takes over pride. Those were definitively good times! :)

Your turn now! :)

I don't get start struck.

They're all people and they're just as fucked up as I am.

I don't get star struck either, but I have no idea what I'd say to Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page.

That's the idea. There ain't no fanboy around here after all. ;)

Jimmy Page is God. oh wait..wrong forum...

I must say I misted up a bit when I met Eddie Van Halen at the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago. I was working there at a reception for a bunch of musicians who played at a Jason Becker benefit show in town. Billy Sheehan, Steve Lukather, Rod Morgenstein and a bunch of other guys like that were there. Toward the end of the night it was me, one of the restaurant managers (Boz Scaggs' brother, actually) and EVH in a back office where Eddie was signing some memorabilia on his way out the back door. I gave him one of my band's CDs and he was very gracious and cool about it. I got a little emotional because I flashed back to the first time I'd ever heard VHII as a kid, one of my all-time greatest musical memories. The whole thing was beyond surreal.

Good question. EVH might wig me out a bit too, or Page. As a rule I stay quiet around "famous" people, as they probably get way too much attention and as mentioned above they're probably as crazy as me. Just found their talent and worked it.

Don't get me wrong... I've met a bunch of musicians and celebs, and I was excited to meet them all (well, most of them), but at no time was I awe struck, star struck, or any other kind of struck.
I retell the stories of these encounters with great glee, but the celebs in question get treated the same way as the other guy at the bar or whatever.

That was a loooonnng time ago.

I doubt you's be as "misted" now if that happened again.

No, I was stone sober then, as I was working (not that I never worked a shift there wasted, but not that night).

Now the time I was at a Houston icehouse and offered a simple "What's up" when realized I was sitting next to Billy F'ing Gibbons, I was completely shitfaced lol.

I wanted to play guitar because of Slash. I got to meet him on the second Snakepit Tour. I froze in my tracks like a deer in the headlights.

Just using your word - not implying that you were high.

I just meant that you're older now and not as impressed by these random events.

I've been lucky enough to meet a few of my guitar heros, and while its gone pretty well, I always walked away feeling like I was a goofy a-hole. Even talking to Paul Gilbert - who's like the most down to earth dude ever - I found myself thinking, "Reel it in, idiot, you're geeking out". Talking to Paul Stanley was beyond the guitar player thing....it might as well been Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny in terms of being surreal.

But I gotta go with EVH. I imagine it would look like this:

Returning to the source. :D

I dunno. There's something about being in the same room as EVH that will always be impressive.

True. That said, I think it's still possible to be unable to think of something to say. :)

To this day I can't remember if I told Michael Hedges "thank you" the one time I got to meet him. I sure hope that I did.

Keep Your Friends Close, But Keep Your Rockstars At A Distance

Some people are built for the schmooze. Whether it's business, social, or some combination of the two, there are those that are good at it, and those that are not. I fall in the latter category. This can be a liability, especially when you're a rock fanboi. Imagine loving a band since childhood, and then getting the chance to meet them, and have it be a completely awkward experience.

I used to hang out and try to get autographs. I did it for a long time. Looking back, it's kind of an embarrassment. I don't even have a real collection, for all the ones I got, 'cause they're spread all over the place. What follows is a little sampling of folks I've met, and how it went.

Neil Diamond-It was pretty much like when Jack Black's character in Saving Silverman tried to meet him. I met Neil's keyboard player later in the day, who ironically said I look like Jack Black.

The Black Crowes-I've been a hardcore fan since I heard them play Jealous Again on Howard Stern's show. Met them a couple of times, and had a really great, long exchange with Rich Robinson. I had a Jellyfish shirt on, and he told me the story of them playing his wedding. Meeting brother Chris was totally weird. I pretty much spilled out my heart in a sentence or two, soaked to the bone from a torrential downpour, to which he could barely muster a "cheers". Maybe it was the Hookah Brown shirt I had on.

The Posies-Met Ken Stringfellow, had a super warm conversation with him. A lot of this was probably due to having my lovely wife with me. Ken was enjoying Black Russian's. The next show, I brought a Black Russian to his dressing room, and his girlfriend literally shouted me out of the dressing room. Met Jon Auer, told him I thought we were kindred spirits. You can probably guess how that went.

Fastball-Tony Scalzo, who's songs I absolutely love, once kindly acknowledged a request I shouted out. Next time I saw him, I hollered out another one, to which he might have as well have said "you're a dick for yelling out a request." Miles Zuniga was totally cool.

Def Leppard-Met them a couple of times. I remember shaking Joe Elliot's hand and thinking it was the softest, spongiest hand I ever shook. This seemed odd, seeing as all you ever heard about was their hard working, Sheffield factory lives that they escaped. Steve Clark seemed bothered and grumpy. Of course, Pete Willis was the coolest. He got shit-canned shortly there-after.

The Smithereens-Was given the opportunity to attend a Pat Dinizio "living room" show. Somehow, my band mates at the time led the organizers to think that I was some kind of hardcore Smithereens fan (which I'm not). Of course, they made me sit right in front of Pat as he played. It was in a hotel suite, with a very plush white carpet. Pat proceeds to spill his red wine, blame me for it (not even in a laughing, joking around kind way), and somehow I end up at dude's feet, cleaning up his spill.

Maybe more on this topic as I recall (I had grand designs on this story, really), but overall, I'm now happy to enjoy my rock stars, anonymously, from the crowd. Or through my personal speakers and ear buds.

As I've gotten older the fascination with meeting heros has faded as I've heard plenty of "I kind of wish I hadn't met them" stories. That said getting to play with some heros was a fucking thrill and a half.

I talked one night for a while with Buck Dharma in Club Detroit. Eric Bloom was an ass hole but Buck was down to earth. I must say though that I would really like to meet David Gilmour. He seems so gracious and his playing to me is Aeolian.

Michael Schenker. For me it was a big deal because I had been a ridiculous fan since I was 15. Of course it turns out he was hammered and went on stage after and couldn't play and walked off half way through Into the Arena and packed it in for the night. Not a people person...... That was pretty much the point where I was done with the meeting famous people thing. Since then i have had opportunities to go back stage and see aerosmith, the eagles, and some others, and i have always let somebody else go. I have seen schenker play quite a few times since, sometimes with only 100-200 people there and i love the show and skip the meet and greet.

I would love to meet mccartney though if i ever got the chance....

I met Yngwie Malmsteen at a record signing back in the day. I don't remember being all flustered though he was predictably arrogant and dismissive...towards everybody.

I probably woulda been starstruck around Page, Via, EVH, Petrucci or pretty much any of my guitar gods. These days? Not so much. Sure, I'd have questions but starstruck? Nah.

I have become friends with a guitar hero of mine...Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters....dude is a Les Paul monster.

He is just a nice , everyday guy. Once I was on their tour bus and Richard Young didn't get a joke on Letterman and he asked me to explain.....those guys are just like us....ordinary average joes who made it big. I would love to meet Page, Keith Richards, and Joe Perry. My time with Greg Martin will keep the star-freaking out thing downtown a minimum.

If I met Pete Townshend, I'd probably act like a starstruck dork. Otherwise, I can't think of anyone I'd bug. As far as I'm concerned, Pete IS rock and roll.

Posted

I might be starstruck by Rik Emmitt.

Anyone else and I'd be cool. I think.

Rik Emmett is a monster. I met Steve Morse one time, not only is he a phenomenal player (and somewhat of a comedian), he's as down to earth as anyone I've met.
