coolfeel Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 Hi Pieman, good questions.According to our conversations at the beginning, Jol's typical lead time is 6 months. There were several things at play with my order. I requested special/exotic woods for my build; Redwood and Limba. It took a while for Jol to source a billet of Redwood that met his standard for figure and grade and we missed the opportunity to buy some figured Limba on a couple of occassions. As we waited to get the right woods, Jol toggled back and forth between other projects, plus he has a video production business he runs as well. He got real busy, real quick. I told him to take the time he needed to build my guitar. I imagine if I would have pressed it, he would have worked with me. It really was not an issue for me at all, especially after having waited for Hamer to finish the custom Chap.Jol was intrigued by the combination of Redwood and Limba and suggested Lollar P90s and a single piece Limba neck. We almost did a single piece Rosewood neck. Jol also had some nice ideas for the finish which should turn out really nice. I gave Jol a lot of latitude for the design and he has suggested and done some real nice things. The tummy carve and contoured neck pocket are really sweet and unique to this guitar. Plus the carve on the top is amazing, it was done totally by hand and by a well respected person. Of course I am partial, it will not be everyone's cup of tea and not everyone will dig some of the features.I asked for the selector switch to be near the other controls, just a preference.

django49 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 My custom order Redwood model is chambered. Mahogany body and neck, with a snakewood board. I initially thought limba, but that did not turn out. Not sure if it would have been better. As it is, it turned out VERY good.Subsequently, I stumbled onto the same model guitar, but with Brazilian neck and board. To my ears and hands it is even better. How much of that is the FEEL of that BRW I am not sure, but that is something very real to me. (Those two redwood models are the reason why my Hamer Studio Redwood will, eventually, be sold. And what you have cooking will definitely be a cut above that Hamer Ltd edition too).Rosewood necks can be funny. Sometimes they are spectacular. I suppose I would tag it more "hi fi" and some say it tends to give more of a "grand piano" sound.....Which I like a lot, but if you are looking for the "traditional" sound (think Les Paul-ish) you may be disappointed. Other times, esp if they have a gloss finish, they do not do as much for me. They certainly DO add to cost!If you get into the more esoteric discussions about the particulars of certain woods, limba/korina can be shown (argued?) to have many of the same characters as rosewood or others that are even more expensive (AND hard to get......Just try to find a "deal" on a guitar with pernambuco or chaltecoco!)My 2 cents says you made a wise call to stick with the limba body and neck. It is going to be a real winner.

He is winding things down with my guitar and sounds very excited and pleased with things.Some of the things he said: "This is way different than anything I have done before"(So far) "It has come out much better than I could have imagined""This is absolutely one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever made"Sounds pretty cool. He will be sending me another picture of the top with some additional color on it a little later this evening. Hope to post a pic soon!Of course now I am salivating... we shall see!

One note, the burst is actually more of a Tobacco and not as red as it appears in the pic (think violin). I really dig the faux/scrape binding that he did on it as well. What a cool touch! The way he finished the back is really sweet as well. I will share a pic or two of it when I get some pics.

The pic was of a wood sample where he was going for the aged patina of a 1964 P-bass. Looks pretty killer on my guitar too! We are about a week or so from touchdown and I can hardly wait!

I really thought this was going to be it, disappointed again. The comment about the trees above is funny. Thanks, I needed a good laugh. I think I read a few pages back that this has tummy cut. If I was doing any custom order I'd do the tummy cut for sure. The finish is looking nice. I'm a bit concerned about that green on the fret board . What is a ball park figure to get something like this built? Two years in and the picture that comes to my mind is $ rolling up like I'm filling gas at a gas station. This must be like having a house custom build. I do wish you well on this endeavor.

He said that it would start at $5600 if built by the crew or whatever he calls the non-custom builders. Wonder where the price is today. Or at delivery. About a year ago I remarked that the gestation period of a blue whale is 450-590 days. This baby is coming in at 730 days, I reckon. Why is this taking so long?Coolfeel must have the patience of Job. This is definitely on Jol time.
