sixesandsevens Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I've been on the prowl for a week or two for a Standard/Blitz type guitar and recently stumbled on a Greco I could pick up. Do those of you with experience with both think the Greco is worth getting or should I wait and put the money towards a Standard or a Blitz? Edit: The seller says it's a '78 and it's in their natural (Sen) finish. Sadly, not an EX800HB.
cynic Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I've heard good things about the Greco's so I suspect it's a nice enough guitar for what it is, but I wouldn't expect it to end your search for a Hamer.
serial Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I just picked up a '78 EX800. Very similar if not identical to my '75 Destroyer. I got this as a project (finish is stripped), but I wouldn't compare it to a Hamer Standard by any means. I loved my Destroyer, but looking at these in their raw state, they look almost the same to me as an Epiphone korina Explorer, which is in no way a Standard. Lots of butcher block construction. It'll be a decent guitar when it's all together, but I'm not as knocked out as I remembered being over my Ibanez, mostly because when I traded the Destroyer for one of my first Standards I had t owned a Standard to compare them. I know better now. That being said, if the EX800 is at a decent price (under $1k), snag it. If not, let me know-that way I wouldn't need to restore the one I have!
sixesandsevens Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 Depends on how much you can snag the Greco for!Let's say for argument's sake it's in player's shape, supposedly planed and refretted for $600 cash-and-carry. What would you think then?
serial Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 No brainer. If you get it and don't bond with it-I'll buy it from you!

What would you think then? the Greco's for the most part a destroyer, sen wood construction (most of them). Very well built, awesome tone machines. If in good shape, and you like it, $600. not bad, considering what a destroyer is going for now....
deadringer Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Wait it out. You won't be happy until the GAS gets what it wants.
RichRS6 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 A bird in the hand my friend.Sounds like a sensible price, if it doesn't work out flip it (seems like it wouldn't take too long) and wait for a nice standard.Edited to add: It could be a very long wait if you want a 4 Digit.
HSB0531 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Buying the Greco will siphon the Hamer funds. And make the wait that much longer.
marcnorth Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I've got a Greco LP bass and it's like playing a LP fretless wonder. Best playing bass I own. Snag the Greco.
serial Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Yep-the Greco buy won't cut into his Hamer fund since he'll be able to sell it to me!
stonge Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Buy the Greco and flip it when/if the right Hamer comes along. I keep failing the "flip it" part, and end up keeping instead of upgrading. Mrs stonge is catching on, but ain't called me on it yet. It's gona be a mess when she does lol.
zorrow Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Go for the Greco. Those are great guitars and you can always sell yours if a Standard pops up later.
currypowder Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Like all have said, the Greco is no Hamer, but is a great guitar all it's own. I have 2, a 78 EX800HB and an 81 EX800HR, and love them both. I prefer the 81 to play as it has tall narrow frets where the 78 has short fat frets. But they both play great, that's just a preference. If you can get the Greco for a fair price, I'd say go for it. You would have no problem selling it here, I'd certainly be interested in it just so I could complete the set.

LordOfTheThighs Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I'd wait for the Hamer. I wouldn't be satisfied till I got what I was after. (It's a personal curse ... my obsessiveness.)

sixesandsevens Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 When I first saw the ad for the EX800, I thought that meant the bound and crowned black one (the HB) and got really excited. Alas, mine will be a lot more plain than that. Yeah, you guys talked me into it. The seller seems like a real nice guy and we're meeting Friday, so I'll post some pics when I have 'em. Thanks for all the support and enabling so far.
