dgstandard Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 I wouldn't ship that guitar, personally.OK, great point. But if local pick up is not an option, how does this guitar change hands?
cmatthes Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I wouldn't ship that guitar, personally.OK, great point. But if local pick up is not an option, how does this guitar change hands? I'm not selling it, so that's not an issue.
Disturber Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 Shipping that guitar (or any of this value) in a OHSC is just asking for trouble given the fragility of the headstocks on Standards. The seller didn't give buyers any choice in the matter but given a paypal payment and sufficient insurance (I wouldn't rely on the couriers insurance, get it insured properly for risks in transit) the buyer should be sufficiently protected financially. Or there is something fishy about the guitar that he doesn't want anyone to find out on personal inspection. When it's received by the buyer he can claim it was ruined in shipping and get the insurance to cover it. Just my conspiracy devil chiming in, whispering on my left shoulder. edit for spelling.

This is what I (and many others) are thinking. Why else would you impose such ludicrous delivery terms and limit the auction to U.S. delivery only on a guitar that would have worldwide interest (it will be simpler to make an insurance claim if it is not shipped internationally) and attract a higher final sale price. If I was able to hit the BIN button at $10,000 (and I could have arranged for a collection) he would have been $2000 better off, might even have gone in at $12,500 which IMO is closer to its real value. Could be he's not a bread head (man) and just wanted it to go to a good home, but I doubt that considering it started out at $25,000. So you're not alone in your thinking. The seller didn't do much to help allay any suspicion of this by using the same pictures from the 2 previous appearances on ebay when it was withdrawn before the auctions ended. My other guess is that he has a huge stash of vintage Hamers to sell and he's trying to push the prices up. Could be he's totally legit but has been badly burned by previous vintage guitar sales, apologies in advance if this is the case. I sincerely hope this works out well for all concerned.

The Shark Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I can honestly say that I was nervous when Bubs shipped mine to me. I vividly remember opening the case and not breathing until I inspected it. I had searched for so long.
Steve Haynie Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Until there is a problem, just keep thinking about the fun of playing that Standard.
The Shark Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I remember a conversation I had with Tom Wittrock. He told me that the explosion in the value of Bursts was more a function of the late arrival of most of the folks that wanted one than anything else. They were waxing nostalgic and couldn't find one. Bursts went from 15K for a plain one (sold one in my store from Lansing for that in 1990) to over hundreds of thousands for almost any unmolested example in less than a decade. Tom told me that only a handful of guys thought that would happen. Will 4-digit Standards ever blow up like that? I don't think so. The body style isn't for everyone. But I believe it is thee fuckin' Burst of my generation. I decided that about five years ago.

rng52465 Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Thank you Dave. I will be posting pics later. I'm new to this Board. I was kind of disappointed when I saw all the "maybe its got a broken headstock", why the secret sale etc. I used to collect Charvels and all those people did was bitch, say that everything was fake etc. I saw Cheap Trick in '76 and since then had always wanted a Standard, but never saw them for sale. Happy that this came around. Expensive, but thats okay. I have a early Sunburst as well I will post pics. Thanks!

proxmax Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 These (possibly) Gibson boards on the early Standards with swirly pearl are really funky. gibson inlays are just plastic
