PSA: More NOS Hamers

While perusung the other Hamer listings in Reverb, I noticed the following description of a SS1 for sale in Japan. Priceless....

"Hammer of the guitar produced in the 1980s.

Steve is Stevens prototype of signature guitar.

Since the formal Steve Stevens model in 1986 appeared, it has become a production small number of rare model."

Brent, as always, is being kind.

I recently acquired a Standard from their stash, and the transaction was great.  Two quibbles - one, they don't 'really' know the instruments.  My Standard was chambered, but that info wasn't in the listing.  Two, the Factory Certificates are missing from the guitars, so if you want to know what the build sheet specs are, they can't provide it.  Yes, they're asking TOP dollar, but the instruments are NEW - unplayed.  I was told that prospective buyers/tinkerers were kept away from handling the instruments unless there was cash on-the-counter, so these guitars are as new as you're EVER going to get - forever.

Good to hear. I just picked up the vector. It was a pretty long negotiation. Apparently Lou's father passed so communication was VERY sporadic. I too got the impression they didn't really know the guitars and just think they are NOS goldmines. Pretty firm on prices too. It took a while to get to a price I could choke down and not have a sore rear end. I tried to call them direct to save them all the fees but ended up with a better deal using reverb. Looking forward to the guitar your comments are encouraging with regards to the condition of his horde.

What the hell did they do with the factory paperwork? Do they have the original cases??? Just seems odd they would have done anything with it if they were going to sell them.

My guitar came in its original case, but the envelope with the Cert was gone.  I inquired as to where it went, but no response after-the-sale.  My guess is, these guitars were "on-the-floor" being displayed for quite some time, and now they're hot to move them without any care regarding the documentation.

I disagree......and apparently so do others, since he nearly immediately sold a number of those at the listed prices.

The "expensive" V...poof....the Monaco Bass at full street price....poof. Store owner said he could have sold five of each already at those prices from all the calls.

Nice to see Hamer prices climbing rather than dropping.

Oh, I think Brent was being kind.  He always is!

Just a PSA, if anyone is thinking about buying one of these NOS Guitars please be aware it's a slow and bumpy ride. Please PM for more specific information if needed.

I agree with slow and bumpy. I wanted that Tally Pro so badly, I was near breakdown by the time it shipped. Lou sounded like he was a dealer for quite a while and was very pleasant to talk to. Considering the rarity of the Pro, I was tickled to do better than 40% off list, maybe I caught him at a weak moment. Guitar arrived in brand spanking new condition with all the paperwork. Lou did say he had to look for the cert. No regrets in my experience with Roxy.

I don't live far from this shop and have been in a few times, and purchased a used guitar from them in the last 6 months, a transaction which took close to 3 hours which it didn't need to. I have mixed reviews. Not a critique, just indicative of the type of seller you're dealing with: the store is jammed pack with gear, and quite disorganized. Last time I was in, there were at least a dozen NOS Hamers on the wall - most of their guitars, including the Hamers, are basically untouchable unless you make it clear you're in the market/looking to spend. Lou was a Hamer dealer for a long time & generally seems to know the models, and owns a bunch himself from the sounds of it, though again don't expect to definitely receive original paperwork, case, etc. They seem to have a tough time locating things in the store, and aren't the most courteous employees in my experience. Very tough to negotiate a deal with very little wiggle room, and staff that are not all that informed about the gear. I'm not saying you should be gun shy from buying from them, just know that it's not as smooth sailing/professional as a lot of other shops/salesmen I've dealt with, and to ask a lot of questions while not expecting quick replies.

I wouldn't deal with ANYBODY like that.

Sorry.  There are plenty of NOS Hamers still out there.

That Newport Pro Custom is sweet, but yeah, he's on glue with the pricing and doesn't seem motivated to sell anything (1 transaction feedback in over a half year on Reverb).

I've often wondered about places like that. Are the owners independently wealthy and in it simply to pass the time, and enjoy an occasional full pop sale? Have they paid off all their loans and are just on the hook for property taxes and licensing? Even in the latter scenario you have to have some cash flow going on. Very strange.

No clue about that, but they do teach lessons in the store as well. Perhaps he's getting by with lessons and accessory sales.

First off, the Triple Threat and EM Talladega are on my "must get" list of Hamers.  ( Just ask Don ).  ;)

I tried to buy the EM Talladega from them back in 2013.  I left multiple messages on the their voicemail before I received a returned call by a female who had no idea what guitar I was calling about.  That first returned call took a couple of weeks.  A week and a half later, she calls back to confirm they had that guitar - nothing else.  No price, nothing.  His initial price he eventually mentioned as "somewhere around" was high as hell.  It took over a month to get to that point.  Communications with them were a gold-plated, cluster-f#ck, with returned calls taking two weeks to a month.  Two decent photos of the front of the guitar took forever to get and they still sucked.  I did get them on the third attempt.

I realize its his business and he can run it any way he wishes, but he almost sounded annoyed I was trying to buy one of "his" Hamers.  Almost like he really didn't want to sell it.  It was such a bizarre experience, I actually wondered if he was really ever a licensed Hamer dealer.  I called a couple of more knowledgeable HFC members to confirm he was a dealer.

After over four months of that BS, I still was unable to even get an actual sale price from him.   I punted and never looked back.

Before I'd mess with them again, I'd just assume fly up and get Don drunk off his ass and try to get him to crack open the vault and SUI (Sell Under the Influence).   ;)

I am glad it worked out for some of our members and those Hamer in in good HFC homes.

Oh golly.......You know you are always welcome to swing by and check out any or all of them. As far as leaving with something more than fond memories......B)

I have decided to "never say never"......Without stopping to count, I know I have at least a dozen Hamers that EACH have one or more dibs on them, inc that pair for you. Probably about 3 more for one other person located a "wee bit" closer. I have at least a dozen other guitars I want to sell before I roll up my sleeves and get serious about "my best stuff". But who knows what might change next week.......Just sayin'......Well, actually I am NOT sayin' unless/until something really DOES happen........Right now, "I know NUTTZING!"

In the meantime, congrats on the Tally Pro. They are great instruments! I am still not sure what came over me to let BOTH of mine go!

I tried to buy a used Aztec Gold Standard from him a few years ago and the very first call I was on the phone with him for nearly an hour while he hemmed and hawed and talked and talked and talked.  I don't think he ever gave a specific price, and then he wanted me to call back the next day!  I wasn't about to go through that again and just ended up buying Bubs' Zandard.
