MCChris Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I have a Hardwire Chorus, one of those pedals that has a ton of different sounds and settings in it, but I've found one that is perfect and the knobs never move. I really should go Zakk Wylde with it and leave it on all the time; the setting is subtle but it really adds a hugeness to both clean and overdriven tones.
RobB Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 Never, until recently (Red Witch Empress). Kinda like what Chris said above. Still dicking with different settings, but liking what I'm hearing so far.
cynic Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 ^^ This. I nearly always have it on because it makes my single-guitar-in-a-bedroom rig sound like a single-guitar-in-an-emtpty-3-car-garage rig.
bubs_42 Posted December 16, 2016 Author Posted December 16, 2016 So a slow, shallow sweep just to give things weight?

On mine I have the Speed all the way counterclockwise, Depth all the way clockwise (and I'm pretty sure I use the Modern setting).
bubs_42 Posted December 16, 2016 Author Posted December 16, 2016 I'll give that a shot, I just bought a Way Huge Blue Hippo and it has some great sound, but if its going on the board, it can't just take up space if i'll never step on it. Echo Puss-Red Llama-SaucyBox-Garagetone Tremolo (best and cheapest out there). All on batteries for now but I left room for 2 more pedals and a power supply.
Jeff R Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I have one of these from 1985, so you know it's got a rich, classic chorus effect just from its era of creation. I have a strat in the shop right now loaded with an EMG David Gilmour pickup/harness package, and it paired with one of these is unbelievably cool for both its tones and the simplicity.
Steve Haynie Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 Something about ehx makes me want to use their stuff, and the Stereo Polychorus pedal has been a favorite. However, those early 80's Boss chorus pedals really do represent the time period well. That Boss chorus sound is just right sometimes.
SSII x 2 Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I use an old DOD Super Stereo Chorus in the loop with the level down pretty low just to give a little 'ambience.' Leave it on most of the time. Speed varies, but usually under 12 o'clock...
Jakeboy Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I will use one for an effect....especially over a clean, pretty part.....so I am planning on buying Keeley's new one...a roto-flange-chorus pedal called Dynomyroto...it releases next week. i used to use the one on my Rockman quite a bit back in the 80s....didn't everyone? I find it an effect that is easy to overuse. When I listen to Permanent Vacation I can now hear too much chorus on some songs....so for me, it is an effect with specific applications. But I dig that application. It makes a clean guitar very pretty, fluid, and 3D if used with discretion and subtlety.
KH Guitar Freak Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I currently have a Retro-Sonic Chorus and an Analogman Mini Chorus. I only use it sometimes for cleans only. I hardly use it with distortion

Armitage Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I only use it for clean pretty stuff, and when I play in stereo.

Ah, the answer then is the Effector! No pedal board space at all! ETA: grew up listening to Lerxst - love me some chorus (with added flange, too!). Up until the sell-off, this was my solution: Twin modulation engines that can be independent or coupled to the same LFO and up to 18 presets.

I came home, set the speed almost off and the depth wide open and played the opening riff to Permanent Vacation! That was fun, love that riff.
Rich_S Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I've had a CE-2 on my board since about 1982, though not the same one. I presently have an MIK version because the MIJ have gotten pricey. I use it for my main "thang" which is '80s post-punk Brit pop. Pretenders, Police, Smiths, and the like. It's not really heavy, but it's not subtle. I don't use it all the time, so when I switch it on as an effect I want it to be obvious. When I want it even more wobbly, I switch to my MIJ BF-2 flanger, which I set up to do a fair impression of Andy Summers' Electric Mistress. THAT's the true Police sound, especially on the early albums. I have the two pedals side-by-side on my board, so I can switch between them with one stomp.

Picked up one of these the other day for my Electric Mistress needs: Cheap, small and does a reasonable enough job for me.

I've tried several so called CE-1 clones, and the Retro-Sonic is still the closest sounding to the original, not to mention way more practical to use. Mine is the previous generation one compared to the latest one, whatever that means. I think the newer one has a slightly brighter chorus tone, and I think they tweaked the level control as well. I don't experience any problems with my whatsoever though Edit: Checked the Retro-Sonic website after so many years. Last I heard was that they are going back into production. Looks like it was a limited run variant, as opposed to full blown production. Love mine though
tomteriffic Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 Had an Ibanez 9-series and then the classic TC Chorus-Flanger on my board for nearly ever. Almost always on, it was set to a point where you didn't really notice it until you turned it off. I was typically playing in country/classic rock trios and could always use a little extra fullness. Never could stomach the seasick wobble of the Roland/Boss units. These days it's a TC Corona, set to something a little bit more pronounced by default, but it's just a quick twist to get it back to nearly unnoticeable. ETA: There was an Electric Mistress in there too at some point, but it just got to be too unreliable on top of pretty noisy.
Rich_S Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 49 minutes ago, velorush said: Picked up one of these the other day for my Electric Mistress needs.... Yeah, there are a lot of small, inexpensive alternatives these days, but when I picked out a flanger in 1982, the BF-2 was the only one that took 9-volt power and came in a single, small footprint. All the others - MXR, Electric Mistress, A/DA - were huge and AC-powered. The BF-2 works for me, so I've never bothered to switch. It does that "Walking On The Moon" clang really well.
LefThanDed Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 No pedal... but I can't live without a chorus effect for guitar and bass - I have a problem. Roland SDE 1000 in my SWR Red Head bass combo. Built-in to my Marshall VS265. Also in Yamaha THR10. Help...
