Pantera Tour? Hard Pass

I know it's been done again and again by other bands (including Kiss) but Dime was the driving force behind their sledgehammer sound and fury. No Dime? No Pantera. No debate.

Nirvana got back together, and Dave Grohl gets to do whatever he wants.  That reunion was never intended to be a new version of the band.

Some people on the Iron Maiden message board have had negative opinions with a suggestion that the shows would have to be a tribute to Dime and Vinnie Paul.

Since they signed with some promoter, my guess is they'll finagle some younger kid who's obsessed with Darrell and proclaim him as someone who "channels" Dime and if they make decent money, there will be more tours.

Or, they'll do the hologram thing and play tracks.  Either way, it won't be any good.

Looks like it’ll be Zakk on guitar and Charlie Benante (Anthrax) on drums.

I’m on the fence about this one. Some world class musicians playing heavy music, sounds good to me. As long as you’re not delusional enough to go into this thinking you’re seeing Pantera.  It’s a reunion of half the band paying tribute to the other half and their catalog of music

Many long standing bands out there have half or less of the original members. Some bands have only the original vocalist and everyone else had been replaced. Hell, some bands out there touring don’t have any of the original members left.

Excellent choice with Charlie

Ok, I amend my statement to, “blowing donkey choad in purgatory.”

Where did you see that?

The interview posted has Rex saying, “It wouldn’t be Zakk Wylde. I guarantee you that. I’ve just put it out there so we can get on past it.”

Which seems pretty wrongheaded to me. Love or hate Zakk, he's the only "name" I can think of who I can legitimately seeing doing this out of a true camaraderie with Dime who could also pull it off. Like, is he just not interested, or is that saying they won't do it? Or did that already change in the last 12 hours?

ETA: I see that even though the GW piece was from 12 hours ago, they cited an interview with Rex from at least 18 months ago.

not where I originally read it but the most recent article I saw just now that confirmed it.

I like those songs, and Phil and Rex have every right to play them still and together if they want to. Hell, Rex was more or less there from day  one himself.

However, if "Pantera" didn't die with Dime (and that's a stretch), then it sure as hell did with Vinnie. I won't pay money to see Phil and Rex go out there are pretend that they are Pantera. Regardless of the prior albums, Pantera was the four guys who did Cowboys through Reinventing the Steel for better or worse. They all have claim to that legacy and shouldn't put it on a shelf, but they also can't pretend anything called "Pantera" in a post-Abbott-Bros. world is just an empty shell playing dress up.

And yeah, I realize I'm being VERY generous to Rex.

I hate that they're going to tour under that name for a lot of reasons. I know the real money is in the brand, I just hate it's going this way. I'm sure I'll go, and there's going to be a lot of cognitive dissonance.

Phil always seemed like a bit of a jag off to me in interviews. Granted; he was pretty much always stoned so I won’t judge him based on that since he appears to have cleaned up quite a bit.

Rex, however, came off as a really good dude from what I had seen of him. He seemed to really care about the fans and wasn’t just into things for the cash. Of course; I’ve been wrong about people plenty of times before.

if they play around me on a weekend; I’ll probably go. If it’s a school night or I would have to travel more than an hour; it’ll be a really easy way for me to pass.

I saw Pantera on the Far Beyond Driven tour and it was the best metal show ever.
Rex was always like the red-headed stepchild in that band to begin with and Phil should choke on unending dildos made of rusty razor wire.
Phil was always a delusional Douchebag of a sad little king of a sad little hill who was damn lucky to be tolerated by Vinny and Dime in the first place, and then he spent all of his time after Pantera slagging Dime and the band in public, which unfortunately, directly fueled the unbalanced gunman. I don’t blame Phil for actually pulling the trigger, but fuck him forever.
So, I don’t *wish* him to be gunned down on this fucking farce of a hypocritical has-been fever dream, but he sure as shit has it coming 🤷‍♂️😆

I'm a big fan from way back in their early DFW club days.

A tribute show I can understand, but a whole tour feels like a cash grab.

I probably would have listened to Pantera more if they had a different singer and yeah he really seems like a huge turd.

Hahahaha!.. I love seeing this side of Geoff... he's usually so soft spoken and polite...  It's that damn heavy metal music I tell ya,  It's possessed him! 🤣

Not a fan, but I wouldn't diss 'em either---after my time, pretty much, plus Dime and I had an, er, awkward encounter at a guitar show in Arlington TX in '91 (apparently when they were just starting to break out).

The thing is, reunions (even with an intact lineup) need to be examined on a case-by-case basis as to whether they're nostalgia-mongering or legit attempts at picking up the pieces, so to speak.

But sometimes while the reunion music is a transitory time warp, the presentation can be disappointing compared to the potency of the original stuff.

And, as discussed here before, I still cannot think of a better example of a sonic letdown than Cream in 2005....but that's in my generation.

Which begs the question for Pantera fans or any reunion initiative, regardless of genre or generation: Going into such a gig, what do you expect to hear?

Like UFO without Schenker.  Just not my thing.  Michael was UFO for me.  My second favorite band only to Thin Lizzy.
