"Wasting Light" is an excellent album. I frankly don't give a rat's ass about "cred" or any of that pretentious bullshit. There are lots of cool tunes on there. Grohl is an excellent drummer, competent guitarist, great songwriter and one hell of a showman.

I don't know anything about his past in music (I know he played lacrosse in NoVa where he's from, so I do t see how that's at all punk) and whether he was a tool or not. I dont really care-I like alot of his music. If he was an asshole, then let karma work it out. I will say that even the shittiest Foo tune is better than "Tattoo" though. ;P

I've never understood the appeal of the Foo Fighters.

I'm probably a dinosaur/old guy who's bitching at kids to get off my lawn, but when I think of "rock", the Foo Fighters don't come to mind.

To me, they sounds like a loud Mentos commercial.

I agree the Foos can write a catchy pop tune, but to me they seem like they're always trying too hard to show everyone they're a rock band.

"Dear Rosemary" with Bob Mould is a great song. I don't love all Foo tunes, but the good stuff is really good.

I also really dig QOTSA "Songs For the Deaf"-Grohl is a very distinctive (and as most drummers will acknowledge) very talented drummer.

i'm not a huge foo's fan, but dave is a great drummer and decent singer/songwriter.

as for cool factor & cred, anyone who has recorded w/ john paul jones, lemmy, and wino has cred w/ me.

plus he gets major points w/ me for wearing a SLAYER shirt while playing beatles tunes w/ paul mccartney on the grammys.

"cred" = envy of folks who claim they have it of folks they claim don't have it, and

the Grammies is not the show to watch if you are seeking to find folks that have it.

I can't sit through most Foo albums, but every once in a while they record a song that knocks me out, Rope being one of them. Cred? Most of our musical heroes were pretenders of one type or another, sorry if I'm bursting any bubbles. Fake it 'til you make it.

I only mentioned "cred" because Grohl's speech showed him to be so desperate to have some. Turns out he has plenty ... as a major label, arena rock star and card-carrying member of the Grammy-approved glitterati. Unfortunately, he wants everyone to think he's still slumming it. Because, you know, those who do are perceived to have credibility.

But, since you asked, Lemmy is a perfect example, especially when you can A/B the recent documentary about him and the recent documentary about Foo Fighters.

Look where Lemmy lives. Look where Grohl lives. Look where Lemmy records. Look where Grohl records. That's a pretty good illustration.

Someone in a thread about this topic on another forum mentioned Mike Ness. I think he also belongs in the "legitimately having cred" category.

I remember you having issue with the Foo doc when first discussed. You percieve Grohl as "desperate," I see him as about as un-desperate as one can be. Also, you're percieving his speech as a public "boast," while I view it as heartfelt.

It's all about one's personality and perception, and what they bring to the table when forming opinions. You're a cynic, I'm a romantic. It takes a village.
