hamerhead Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 At 18, I was fortunate enough to somehow talk my Mom into co-signing a loan for the only 'must have' guitar I can think of - a Les Paul Custom. Still have it, still the only LPC I've ever owned.I've lusted after plenty - 4-digits, B&C Sunbursts, 335s, doublenecks, countless C/Os or 1-offs, SHISHKOVS - but nothing has made me drop everything else to give chase the way a Les Paul did. I'm currently sitting about 5 feet away from an old ES-330 that will be leaving here soon because the amount I could feel comfortable paying wasn't close enough to what the owner(s) felt they could/should get. I totally understand and it's bittersweet. On one hand I know I'll never get another opportunity like this to own a classic grail-worthy guitar. On the other, I don't need it. I want it - I don't need it. And it's kinda nice to know that I'm not going to lose (much) sleep over 'missing out'.I don't know to this day what made my Mom do it, but I am positive I didn't thank her enough.
GC Ron Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 My grail is the '64 Firebird V that I almost bought in '80. Missed it by a week. Wished I had never played it. That being said I own one grail, a four digit that my friend ordered back in '77 and received in '78. I finally bought it 25 years later. Second grail, a '59 Burst. Got to baby sit one for a year and two months, played it every day while I had it. Third grail, an original Korina Explorer. A friend aquired one a few years back so I have been able to play it. Close enough for me on that front.
yuominae Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Two years ago when I was preparing to move back to Europe I cleared out my guitar collection because the removals company said I'd get taxed up to my eyeballs if I had more than one or two guitars. I really regret selling a Heritage H150 Classic with ebony fretboard and flame mahogany neck. I sold it on yahoo auctions for the equivalent of $800 and nearly cried when I sent it off. Turned out I then got a job in Tokyo and didn't leave Japan... I'm still keeping an eye out on yahoo auctions for it. I'm such an idiot
THE ALLEGED Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 May god strike me dead right now if I'm lying to you! In the mid 90s I was a broke ass airman in the Air Force stationed in Las Vegas. During those times I would drop my student wife off at school and frequent a small music store across from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas UNLV. One of those particular visits I walked in and spotted a 1965 Pellham blue SG on the wall for $3500 bucks! The price was astronomical to me but it was the coolest looking guitar I had ever seen at the time. I pondered many ways to obtain the guitar. I even considered selling my 1966 Buick gran sport to procure the bread. The price was just too high! A week later I got my first loan at Nevada federal credit union for $3500! I then returned to find out that it was on hold and considered sold to none other than... The Edge. They were on tour for zoo TV and playing Vegas the next night. That bastard got it! And he now takes it on tour as a backup guitar. To my knowledge he's never played it on stage. Must be nice! Couple years ago I went to see them in Vegas and he didn't play it then either. If you knew how bad I would love to have that guitar I think it would give it to me. Here is a picture of his tech playing it before a show. Haunts me to this day.... Makes me Sick to mention it now too! True story. I promise!
THE ALLEGED Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Missed this one last month!!! My grail at the moment! I still hope to buy this someday!
Bennyboy-UK Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Wow ok... I would love an awsome LP/SG Jr.... One day I'll get one, but I'm scared about having a punt at one online as its a lot of money, and seller descriptions might not be 100% plus im not expert enough to know if something is original or not. Since being tiny I always had a thing for mockingbirds, and I've got a wonderful one now, so that's done! The HFC owners guitars are full of guitars that hold Grail status for me... The purple prince guitar - one day... I'd love to get over to the U.S. Just to have a go on it, much less consider the size of the brown envelope stuffed with cash that would be required to prise it out of Chris's shed Joe has got SS models covet hugely, the single pickup black and white one with boomers perhaps the most. Peter has probably my favourite Cali the no bookmatched Aztec gold model. I could go on...

I have no idea what it might go for, and I wouldn't have the money anyway, I'm just curious what it might be worth. If you can't give us an idea, that's cool too.
ARM OF HAMER Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 No idea about the one Hamerhead has had in his custody but a excellent condition 63 ES-330 all original can vary in price from mid 2k to mid 4k maybe more.depending on who is selling it.There was one in town[Red] here that sold for $3400.00, same person also had a Gibson "Crest" that he brought in for a look at a PUP issue.I owned one A LONG time ago................. can't remember what the exact year the guitar was, what I payed for it,or what I traded or it for..................oh well................. me with the guitar in 1980.

Tortious Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Only one 'grail'? Unpossible. I have almost everything I want now, though things constantly appear that intrigue me. But the top of the want list that I have not yet acquired, Suhr Carve Top Standard. Huber Orca or similar. Martin D41. Then Shishkov had to go and start a company, so there's that in mind as well. It's good to have goals, right?
tobereeno Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Holy grail Hamer's for me include: 1) The Kellifornian 2) That custom order 24 fret Cali/Cent with the natural flame top and unusual pickup selector location 3) Chris's Prince guitar There are others I desire but don't quite qualify as holy grail. Others, that I own, used to be on "the list", DBraz, do you have a picture of this 24 fret Cali/Cent? In the 80s, my holy grail was a Rickenbacker 4080/12. Eventually owned a 4080 (w/six string guitar) but the instrument as a whole was, in the end, fairly meh. Bolt-on neck Rickenbackers...just doesn't work. This year for Rush's tour though, Geddy Lee somehow scrounged up a pair of 4080/12s - they seem new to his collection and not the ones he used back in the 70s. What I really wanted was a 4080 with 8 string bass and 12 string guitar. No one made those; someone mentioned to me that an outfit called "Hamer" would build anything. Never had the scratch at that time to order that custom instrument. I like to say that the Californian Custom has eluded me, but I've had a shot at a couple in the past year and passed. And of course, the one that sells for stupid cheap money is the one that flew under the radar on eBay. My true holy grail guitar, well, I already own it
Thundersteel Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 1987-ish Guild Nightbird: I'd like a Les Paul some day. I've got two I'd like to sell--PM me for details if you're serious!
zorrow Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Not exactly a "Holy Grail" for me, but I've always wondered where the hell are the custom Vectors Jeff Waters of Annihilator played in the late 80's/early 90's. He told me once he "gave them to a fan". Kind of weird. This is a picture of him playing the red one: This is the black one: It's very strange nobody knows where they are nowadays. And yes, I might pay some serious cash for one, if it evers appeared.
JustKid Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 It's very strange nobody knows where they are nowadays. And yes, I might pay some serious cash for one, if it evers appeared. Not sure if you know how serious Jeff is about his guitars. I got one of his Vantage - $5K, that's what he asked for it and it's ( sorry if there are any fans of Vantage) pretty cheapy/crappy guitar to my opinion, beside the fact that he used it a lot. Can only imagine what he'd want for Hamer. So do not believe that he gave it to some fan. Still have pics of that vantage somewhere...

I've seen him giving away stuff that I would have charged big money for, including two of his Epiphone prototypes. The Vantage is the one he used on early Annihilator demos. I think even "Alice In Hell" was recorded with it. Of course it's a crappy guitar, but to those who care about Annihilator, it's a piece of history anyway.
sirDaniel Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 actually...having nightwolfs junior is about as close to grail in hamer land that I can hope for...maybe ever

devrock Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 My two holy grail axes are in my sig. I "have" a Phantom, but it's not an original GT. It will be restored by me(?) as a GT. I do have a line on a GT, but don't have the cash available to grab it right now. Ultimately, I wish I could land a black one. Runners up would be: EBMM EVH model KK Downing Gibson V (released a few years back) Flamed Cali USA Jackson Mustaine KV1 (I have a KV Pro that needs work, but would like a USA model as well) Ibanez JEM VBK (the 6-string one with the vine inlay) I'm sure there are others, but those are by far the biggest ones.

Your friend is my competition in this case. Well, not that much, really. I own a white Vector that is pretty similar to Jeff's -pointy headstock, stadium logo, boomers and sustainblock- and I even prefer not having that "Annihilator" word printed on it. I'm just curious where the heck those guitars ended. I tried to contact the other guy who played with Jeff at the time and got pretty close to talking to him, but at the end I couldn't get much closer than that and just dropped the ball. I might retry soon -have his contact info somewhere.
