Hamer Standard vs Gibson Explorer

I saw that one.  He seemed to not be overly enthused about the Gibson.   I'd personally never reach for a Gibson if a Hamer was available.

I've never been able to compare the two in person. I've played a lot of rotten Gibsons that were new on the showroom floor. Only a few rotten Hamers that were just abused used instruments. I would have liked to have heard the stock pickups in the Hamer but seriously doubt it would have come through in the YouTube signal  compression

That has been posted here before. Here is a video where he plays his Californian.

Dang it. A couple of years ago, I owned an 89 Explorer and two Hamer Standards at the same time.  I don’t think I ever once had two out of the case at the same time, much less even had the idea to stage a small shoot out between them.

The difference in the body shapes is subtle but I always liked the Standard a lot more than the Explorer.

1000% agreed. Once someone “pointed” that out to me, I never could un-see it.

Me too.  I always liked the Explorer shape, but until I saw a Standard (and an Ibanez Destroyer TBH) I never really wanted one.

Had already seen this video. I all honesty, even if I’m biased (like us all here), I don’t dislike the Explorer. It sounds fatter, meaner. I bet both guitars together in a twin metal attack would sound awesome. Nonetheless, the Standard does look much more “high end”, and those pickups do cut really well through the mix.

Explorer, all day. I’ve owned nearly every Standard (except a 4-digit) model. Vectors, too. I don’t like how thick Standards are. They are a bit unwieldy and less nimble than an Explorer. There, I said it…

The Gibson Custom shop '58 explorer in mahogany (which sell used in the 3k ish range) would compete

pretty well with a Hamer IMHO...

I've owned both (and still do). My fav Gibby Explorer to date has consistently been my 2011 Red Rocker (Sammy Hagar) signature Explorer. That one ticks all the boxes. As for Hamer Standards, my '95 Korina Standard is impossible to beat.

I 100% agree, I own quite a few Explorer shaped guitars... Gibby's, Ibanez, Greco, Aria Pros, Jackson,  Wayne, Momose and Hamers... IMHO, there is nothing that can compete with a 8lb or less Korina Hamer.... especially equipped with SD Seth Lovers or Antiquities 🤘

Early Standard, about 43mm thick. And I too prefer the more rounded points of The Standard.

The best one I've owned is my Sonic Guitars replica by Paolo Sulcuni in Italy.  It's super light and rings like a piano, when strummed.  My 4-digit "0221" is a close second.  Never had a good Gibson one, except for a 1976 white one that Kizanski tells me never existed...

That doesn't sound like something I would say.

And again I am reminded I can be way to impulsive.

Gone and REALLY missed.  #91IMG_0256.webp

That guy has a nice custom artist as well - one of the few YouTube folks with some following that features Hamers.  I guess I'm glad there aren't more as prices would only be getting rougher faster.

It was a bi-Centennial pair.  Firebird in white with the red, white and blue bird on the guard.  Matching white Explorer.  I could have sworn...

I've told you 1000 times: You don't want that.
