(If this picture will link) Here he is playing 0000 with "special thanks to Rick Nielsen."

ETA: here he is at the Music Zoo with a Standard:

Joe-and-Tommy-590x590.jpg

The caption reads: "However, it wasn’t long before Joe had to split and head to his gig, where he put on an awesome show to a sold out crowd. Toting a number of slick Gibson’s throughout the night, including a ES archtop, Custom R9 Les Paul, and his infamous “Skinnerburst” Les Paul, guitar geeks surely got their fill. Joe even brought out a Strat and the Hamer seen above for a few songs. All-in-all, the night was filled with enough smooth licks and Dumble tone to make us shed a tear, and we were thankful to have the opportunity to see such a great show! Have a look at a few photos we captured from the concert, featuring a few of the axe’s Joe sported throughout the evening."

Tangentially, why do guitarists hate this guy so much? He plays great and has tons of bitchen guitars. Is it the modern version of Yngwie-scorn?

I don't know, but I've certainly been entertained by it over the years.
Just the uproar alone when he started wearing suits and shades at his gigs.  How dare he up his appearance!

I agree.  I really like his playing and tone.  Maybe some guitarists think he has an attitude or showing off what he owns, but I see it as a free education on vintage gear and look at stuff I would normally have to scour the internet to see.

Right? Exactly!

Probably good ol' jealously.  I don't fawn over every gear purchase he makes, but I think it's cool that he's such a guitar nerd, uses real amps on stage, and finds joy in exploring, using, and chasing down an incredible variety of guitars, amps, and effects.  He's like a prominent muscle car aficionado and collector who likes all sorts of GM, FoMoCo, and Mopar classics, enthusiastically shares news of his latest finds, and actively drives the cars rather than just salting them away in garages.

Well put!

I used to think he was a little pretentious, but after reading a few interviews with him I can see where he's coming from and why he does what he does. His Nerdville videos are total guitar geekery, and he puts the gear to good use to make music, not just to fawn over as collectibles. He used to jam with Danny Gatton in his younger days, and that's a heck of a tutor. From what I've seen on video he plays pretty darn good and doesn't seem like he's mailing it in. I can respect that.

He does know how to merchandise though, but if that's what it takes to make a living as a musician in the days of streaming micro-payments I can accept that. Still ain't buying a set of his cufflinks though. Now if he needs another four digit 0109 might be available...

I think it's collateral damage from the crowd who hates "blooze dads" and "lawyer guitars".  Since his audience gets stereotyped as mostly middle-aged, professional men with a fixation on blues, I think he gets a bit of a spillover effect.

“Your Majesty! The peasants are revolting!”

”No kidding. They stink on ice!”

I've said before, I think he's a nice dude, would like to chat with him about gear, and he's got chops for sure, but whenever I see a video of him playing live, he just seems like he's trying too hard to be whatever his definition of a "bluesman" is.  Him having more stuff for sale than Gene Simmons is a little off putting too.  Also, his songs just don't really do it for me.

Dude's enthusiastic as hell, loves the hunt as much as the acquisition.  Doesn't just file this stuff away - he actually plays it.  Has a sense of humor about himself, too.  He's put together a killer band every time I've seen him.  I think it's as much jealousy as anything.

And HC - he played that Standard at the end of the show I saw a few weeks ago.

In a way, he’s a musical chameleon, similar to Gary Moore. He can stylistically nail any type of blues, hard rock or blues rock. There’s a video clip of Joe and Paul Rodgers doing a few Free songs and it’s incredible. He totally nailed the Kossoff sound. Uncanny!

Saw him in concert in NYC, maybe Beacon theater or Radio City Music Hall. I really enjoyed the show. Excellent player didn’t feel he was posturing at all. I’d see him again!

I love lots of his music,  but not all of it. I love how he geeks over gear just like us. I have a friend who is a close friend of his and he swears Joe is a regular and very cool, kind dude. All about guitars and amps. Just like us. I’d love to meet him and jam. His love for all my heroes is so admirable. He always gives props to those who paved the way before, be it Page, Beck, Muddy, or the Wolf.

I need to see him live.
I also admire that he owns his music, recording process, career, the entire business. He built it himself. He made himself a hugely successful businessman.

What I don’t like is that he markets too much crap. Blues fly-swatters, watering cans, blues bathrobes, etc. And it seems like he releases a new album or DVD monthly…but all that is part of his business empire that I admire above.

Overall, I think our guitar world is much better with him in it.

Speaking of gear, Seymour Duncan just released a new signature set of "best PAFs ever" based upon Joe's "magical" 1960 ES335. The demo is great (to my ears) but might also be enough to convince many they are not for them. Def shows their range and why HE likes them. Reasonably priced, I think. Tempted to buy a set, even though I have no place to put  them right now.

I ike Joe.  Saw him just a couple nights before America was locked down. As somebody here pointed out, he selected the guitar to match the song, ie, a Strat for Strat-ty song, etc.  I thoroughly enjoyed the show from mega-company seats my brother scored but i would pay $ to see him again.  if you haven’t seen him on the Doug and Pat Show podcasts, you should.

I used to be a huge Screamin Cheetah Wheelies fan back in my Nashville days, and Joe used to play with him when he was still basically a kid. I always thought this clip of Mike Ferris giving him a little good humored shit was funny. "This boy is cracker all the way to his shoes!"

I was in contact with Mike the other week and he told me he had just given it to Joe as a gift. "'He's done a lot for me". Joe played it on stage like a month ago. It's on the Hamerguitars Instagram.

The Standard you got from Mike is from The Music Zoo. Mike still has the one he bought in Germany.
