Congrats on the Duotone! It’s amazing how useful a (plugged in) live acoustic sound you can get with one especially when blending in a good IR and adding some EQ and compression to the signal.4 points

That's interesting. I'm no Phil X (duh...), but I find the opposite for me. When I stop trying to sound like Eddie, Billy, George, Mark, or Joe, that's when I stop sounding like a copy of a copy and things start to lock. My best solos are ones where I F something up ("Jef" something up? : ), and just "go."3 points

I saw a video of Phil X (I think) ripping the hell out of some Eddie song and he got every tiny bit perfect. When the solo came around he played Eddie's solo perfectly but then looped the solo section and played his own Eddie-style solo right behind it and something just felt...off. It was like AI or a copy of a copy of a copy. He's a great player and one of the best I've seen at copying Eddie, but there was only one Eddie.3 points

Well, I managed to get to about 2 minutes in. He's great, and I like it when a shredder looks like he's having fun, but a little of that goes a long way with me.3 points

I did that on an Ibanez bass tuner (the only crappy tuner Gotoh made), it was almost magical: I heated it with a cigarette lighter iirc, placed my biggest magnet on it and the cap popped right out to the magnet, I think I just used a guitar amp speaker for the magnet3 points

URGENT UPDATE: Just read this about FedEx shipping guitars. Back to our original programming... As many of you have seen, I've been selling off a bunch of gear... guitars, amps, pedals etc. And, I have found out some really interesting tid-bits on shipping. There seems to be more ways to ship gear than ever. Beside the standard USPS, UPS, FedEx etc. I've found some great discounts at other places. It also seems the box and sizes sometimes makes one shipping service better than others. What I mean is, you just have to check all of them to see which ones gives the best price for a particular box/weight. It's kinda' a pain-in-the-ass to enter all the info multiple times, but I'm retired, I have plenty of time - haha. But, it can save you a LOT of money on big items. OK, let's not get into a flame-war over which company is safer than another. It's all a crap-shoot, they all can damage stuff. Over the years, I haven't found one to be the 'Best' to ship. That's why I over pack and bubble-wrap the crap out of everything and make sure there is plenty of room around the item as to not let something hit the box and still get to the gear. Loosen strings, take off switch-tips, secure guitars in cases, pull tubes and wrap separately when possible, put paper under the strings as to not let the strings vibrate and possibly put indentations on frets etc. Double box guitars with gig bags. With all that, damage can still happen. Back to shipping... There are the big 3. UPS, FedEx, USPS (Yeah, there is also DHL) Also, when selling on Reverb or Ebay, they offer discounted shipping if you use them. And, can provide 'safe shipping' coverage, which can be good. (I usually have all my gear insured by Heritage Insurance, so I have that to rely on. I have only had to use them once in 20 years and they were great.) But, I've found much better shipping prices outside of Reverb and Ebay. Then, there are some other outside companies that you should check: PirateShip.com and Paypal. Yeah, Paypal offers discounted shipping, even if you didn't use them for the sale. Their prices have been EXCEPTIONALLY good!!! Sometimes the best I have found on big items. Also, always remember to check for discount codes, especially when using UPS, I have found some really good, 20-25% discount codes on the webbernets. Again, its weird, one shipper might offer a better price for large items or small boxes vs another, you just have do some legwork to find out. Lately, I've found big items like guitar and amps, Paypal Shipping or UPS with discounts, seem to have the best prices. Pedals or small stuff, Reverb shipping or USPS is quick and easy. Middle size stuff, like rack gear is all over the place. Hope this helps! ernie P.S. If you guys know of any other shipping options, please post them. Let's keep this going to save us all some moolah!1 point

I have found that Pirate Ship is always cheaper than Reverb shipping prices.1 point

Thanks for the tips! I've been using eBay or Reverb shipping labels and they always show how much they are discounted, and I always though it was a good deal and I couldn't do any better. I have occasionally used Pirate Ship and didn't notice any difference. I didn't even know PayPal offered shipping.1 point

Thanks for the info on this. It’s something I really should look into further. Like everyone else here, I’ve had my share of shipping incidents, most recently UPS breaking a headstock off of a limited run Tacoma acoustic bass. (Try finding a replacement neck for a brand that Fender killed off decades ago). Anyways, for me, it comes down to the hassle and wasted time. I eventually get paid out but it’s a pain in the ass. I like the Heritage idea a whole lot more.1 point

Thanks, Jake. Serves my home needs well. Once I rewire the, “jam space board”, it will contain, thusly; VoidooLabs Dingbat small board Pedal Power 2Plus Budda Bud-wha Dingus box Peterson mini tuner SoloDallas Storm MXR Univibe Boss DD-8 LP JTM Eleven Axess Buffer (mounted underneath) I love the Boss DD series. I have two Analogman versions, but the DD-8 has all those features and more. The, “trails”, function makes transitioning from lead boost to normal sound very full. I’ll post pics of this simple, yet effective, board shortly.1 point

I would assume so. There's this "Roger Bannister" thing in music, in that Bannister was the first person to officially run a 4-minute-mile in 1954, which a lot of people thought was impossible. Six weeks later, his record was broken, and by the end of the 1950s, there were a number of people who had done it. Hendrix, Peart, EVH - they are all kinda Bannisters. There are plenty of people today who can do everything they did and heaps more. Despite that, there's something clearly psychological about being the first person to step through that door. I have to imagine there are a lot of players today who can play these people under the table but would have, for whatever reason, never been anywhere in the same realm had not someone else shown them there was no real barrier but creativity and desire.1 point

Of course I expect her to cover Peart's drumming. This is why she was hired. I saw her with Jeff Beck. Trust me, she is more than capable of playing any Rush song.1 point

I thought The Girl drummer was great and they all looked like they were having fun. Isn't that the whole point? You can't honestly expect her - or anyone - to cover Neil's parts.1 point

Premise: Rush is my favorite band. Period. With that, I saw the OP video last night and was planning to come here this morning and post it in the "vocalists who need to hang it up" thread from a few months ago. Painful. There's no shame in tuning down. Please. And I love Ged. He can still sing (ref: Clockwork Angels album), just in a (much) different register. Robin Zander notwithstanding, a man in his 70's can't be expected to sing in the same register as in his twenties (again, unless you're Robin Zander). No comment on Ms. Nilles as "Finding My Way" (or most any Rutsey-era / first album song) isn't an adequate vehicle for demonstration of true Rush competency (Peartuosity?). I'll reserve comment - not that it carries any weight - until I hear Strangiato or Natural Science or YYZ or... That said, they do appear to be having a blast.1 point

In all my years shipping hundreds of guitars, I have had less than 5 that had any shipping damage, all fairly minor except one neck break on a rather inexpensive guitar. The claims were between $100 and $500. On all of those incidents, I was eventually able to get reimbursement from the carrier, but it wasn't easy. Lots of back and forth with pictures, inspections, descriptions etc. But the amounts were low. I'm fairly certain that if I filed a multi thousand $ claim with any of the carriers, they would tell me to jump in a lake and there would be very little to do about it. To think that they are going to gladly just write a check for significant shipping damage, whether the value was claimed or not, is delusional. Instead, I have a policy with Heritage that covers my entire collection, including shipping. They are well aware that I am a private collector who buys and sells quite a bit. I would have the policy even if I didn't ship quite often, so it's really not an additional cost. I have had to make a claim with them on a guitar that was damaged in international shipping, and I just needed to provide proof of value loss and price of repair, and they cut me a check. Even though my activities are not a formal business, I feel that, as the shipper, it's my responsibility to get guitars to the buyers safe and sound and make sure that I'm fully covered, and not by whatever the carriers call insurance. Now maybe the person who posted the FedEx insurance info (name redacted for good reason) as a dealer would need to get some other kind of insurance than Heritage since it's more for individuals, not business.1 point

We were getting killed by UPS for dimensional upcharges. To boot, if we had too many adjustments on a single invoice UPS changed an additional Adjustments Fee. Always round up to the next inch (they never discount for overstating the measurement). If it's on the bubble, really close, go with the larger measurement. It's cheaper in the long run.1 point

Just wanted to give an update on my shipping tales. I have been shipping a ton of stuff in the last couple of months... amps, guitars, pedals etc. I am still getting by far the best rates with Pirate Ship. 2nd is Paypal Shipping which is usually about the same. Reverb shipping is easy and they do offer simple protection if you are worries about shipping something. But, as you know me: MOBW (Master of Bubble Wrap) I over pack everything. One thing to note, I've been hit twice with extra fees from Pirate Ship after the item arrives. It turns out it my my mistake. You have to be EXTRA careful with your dimensions and weight. I had a box that was very slightly protruding out in the middle and they figure that into the size. I just measured it at the top. So, after that, I always triple-check my measurements and weight (I even bought a new scale that is super-accurate) No more issues! Carry on my friends! ernie1 point

The seller, Lance, is one of my best friends, actually more like my surrogate little brother, for well over 30 years. He just opened his first fretted brick and mortar, more specifically an exclusively vintage and high-end used gear storefront, in the north end of our state a little over two hours east of DFW. Because of the nature of the vintage and used gear market, Lance does a LOT of gear trades in both the storefront and on Reverb. I haven't asked him about this guitar specifically, I have no interest in it. But I can say just from Lance being my pal forever that his price is as flexible as it is optimistic... and it's in direct reflection of inquiries putting equally unrealistic, I mean, "optimistic," values on their prospective trade-ins. If you want to make what you feel is a more realistic cash offer, or trade(s) offer, on this guitar, reach out directly to Higher Octave Guitars & Gear, ask for Lance, and tell him Jeff from Carondelet and The Fret Shack sent you. Lance will bend over backwards to make something good happen for you.1 point

I found my 1992 Sunburst in a pawnshop 31 years ago. They were asking $1200 and accepted my low-ball offer of $500 cash. This old thing sat disassembled and unplayed while I waffled on selling it or not for longer than I care to admit. I finally decided that I should own at least one guitar with factory paint and decided to keep it. Since it was staying I decided to do a few things. 1) Resanded and buffed so it's as close to new looking as it can be, there's a couple dents and the clear topcoat has taken on that nicotine stained look that some folks seem to like. I'm not a fan personally but fuck it. 2) Señor Gravelin posted this awhile back and I went with a Slammer V2/PAF set, as expected they sound great. 3) The Switchcraft barrel jack got 86'd and replaced with an Electrosocket, yeah I drilled it... 4) Tonepros bridge and tailpiece. And 5) took it to former Arlington Heights and New Hartford Hamer employee Clay Conner who's just a few miles down the road from me for a little fret level and dress. Still great after all these years. Oh yeah-zoom in, it goes to 11 now.1 point

Dibs. And since things have likely doubled in price since 1994, I’ll offer $700 ($350x2). Gotta take inflation into account.1 point
