Okay, so I'm back, sort of.  Do you even remember me?  I need your advice.

I'm attempting to reintegrate non-classical guitar into my life, and I need to avoid the madness that we all witnessed the first decade of my presence here.

I'm looking for one high quality yet not overly expensive guitars:

  • This one is done
  • An electric guitar of some sort.  I still like f-holes and ebony and natural/tobacco finishes. Also Telecasters.  Also every other guitar.  I like them all.

As before, red guitars, gold hardware and Heritages need not apply.

It seems every time I'm away for a number of years, everything gets more expensive.  Will I learn from this?

Please help me stay in control this time.

Thanks in advance.

I didn't post this as a WTB as I'm just asking for advice/suggestions for now.  If it's better in the classifieds as a WTB, please just let me know (or move it).

Define overly expensive!

One option that I think is a good value might be to talk to Barry at Grez Guitars in N California about building a Mendocino. I am very happy with mine and think it rivals my Shishkov in some respects......Tone and playability, if not the same degree of handwork and exclusivity.

For me, I wanted a do it all guitar. It is lightweight (barely 5 pounds). Two great HB pickups that split nicely so I can get Strat-ish tones too. Added the piezo so I can blend in a bit of acoustic shimmer on the fly. Ancient redwood top and ebony board. Mine does NOT have f holes, but he offers that option......If I get another, it will be when he offers up an arched top and longer scale to go with the optional ( little bit) larger body and the f holes.....Which he said he MAY do later this year.

And unlike many builders these days, he got mine to me within 10 weeks of placing the custom order.

There are some good demos on line. And you can spec pretty much anything, not least your fave pickups....I chose Lollar Imperials.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it and consider it a value. No, NOT tree fitty......

Not that I need anything more.....There are only two other builders I MIGHT consider ordering from these days.......And neither one is currently booking any more orders.

Just my 2 cents worth.

PS....The "Seventy Seven" that Cynic is offering looks like a good value and nice looking. I was tempted, but just do not NEED it......

In search for the electric guitar you described I would go for a PRS. If a "core" PRS is too pricey for you take a PRS SE. They offer all the specs you want well made and for a reasonable price.

Any interest in any of the fine instruments offered by the now defunct Fackyo Guitars, (a subsidiary of MuZanski Enterprises)?

There is a korina Artist with F hole and P90's on Reverb (not mine).

Edit: And a korina Artist w/humbuckers there too.

Edit: And a blonde Newport Pro with not one but TWO f-holes asking $2300 plus shipping from Japan

Edit: And a Newport tobacco burst also with the 2 ugly f-holes you said you like :)

You should find a Squier Classic Vibe 70s thinline that you can play locally and see what you think.  I got mine about five years ago and it's a decent guitar that sets up well while it remains as is from the factory.  It's more in the perfectly serviceable realm than high quality, but a bit of a hidden gem I think.

Seriously, check out the Firefly FFPTH Thinline Telecaster. Originally they were under $150 on Amazon, then they quit making them. Now they're hard to find anywhere under $200, but still a great deal. Of the 3 cheap Teles I picked up to fight it out, it won pretty easily.

@Feynman buddy, I missed you around here. I’ve recently gone on a very expensive Standard/Explorer buying spree, so I feel you. Now I have several astonishing guitars that sound, play and look fantastic, but that I don’t need at all. Here’s the one I know you won’t feel jealous about —see how compassionate I am? 😜

Thanks, all.  I know threads like these are somewhat pointless, but it's nice to see the replies anyway.  I've missed (some of) you.

Oy Hombre, mira!

I have one of these.  VERY nice guitar, for a simple kind of example from a fancy company.  I don't know what they go for these days, but since they went the SE route for the Mira I haven't noticed a lot of the USA ones.

there's quite a few Warmoth partscasters out there (often very nice, but you never know how the owner may have screwed it up), probably for a fraction of what it would cost to DIY, for example.

That's ok, but it's no Fackyo II.

bang for the buck.... Godin. they play good and sound good. pro quality, made in Canada with all good stuff.  new prices are about half of what it would sell for if it said Gibson on the headstock. used prices are better because... its not a Gibby or Fender.  I've owned 4, still have 2

DANG!... I just looked on fleabay....

Godin Icon Type 2 Classic with Gig Bag | eBay
