diablo175 Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Happy birthday, dood! Don't really know you as I came into the HFC a wee bit late ('09) to catch the reportedly epic exchanges and flamings. Beat that C-word like it owes you money. Jim 4 Quote
kizanski Posted June 19 Author Posted June 19 (edited) Just spoke with the man as he was preparing for his trip to the hospital. He's certainly not looking forward to the tests and procedures that are waiting for him, but he is surprisingly upbeat. "I'm not fucking dying," he proclaimed, I must say, rather convincingly. I don't know anything about cancer, other than it sucks. I think we all know that part. But what I do know is that no one ever beat it without a positive attitude, so he's on the right path I think. Your posts, phone calls, emails, etc. have really lifted his spirits. That's not me saying it. This is what he told me. Please know that he appreciates it. Edited June 19 by kizanski 14 Quote

Biz Prof Posted June 19 Posted June 19 The cover of my all time favorite birthday card. Not really relevant to birthdays, in general, but totally in line with Jay's sense of humor. Happy birthday, friend! 2 5 Quote
Bennyboy-UK Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Happy Birthday mate - I've been shying away from giving you a shout - I'm not sure what to say, but I think you will appreciate this Birthday Card... 1 7 Quote
edgar_allan_poe Posted June 19 Posted June 19 When it comes to battles of wit, nobody...and I mean nobody, ever made me feel like I brought a knife to gun fight like Jay. Wait, that's not true...I felt more like a guy who brought a straw and paper for spitballs to a gunfight. lol Since his earliest days on the HFC I have said that he was the undisputed master of humor. I was often the victim of his rapier wit and it never failed to bring a smile to my face. You just couldn't help but laugh at the absolute nonsense he would come up with. Happy birthday to the man in the black pajamas...a worthy fucking adversary. (MY favorite movie reference, I never viewed Jay as an adversary) I bow to a master, fight the good fight brother. Denise and I will pray for you. 9 Quote
burningyen Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Pulling for you, Jay! Those were some brutal MSPaints back in the day. I never did understand why things got so heated here sometimes, but oh well, we’re all old now. 1 Quote
Steve Haynie Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Cancer is a terrible thing that really takes a lot out of someone. Considering Rechts' situation... just how much trouble could he cause if he was... unbanned? 🥴🤣☺️🤭 3 2 Quote
singlehum Posted June 20 Posted June 20 (edited) Jay - Happy (slightly belated) Birthday! I wasn't really around much (or just not paying enough attention) in those "wild west" days of the HFC, so I unfortunately missed out on most of the legendary content mentioned in this thread. You and I have corresponded through the forum only a couple of times in the distant past...mainly about guitars that you used to own that either fell into my hands or that I was chasing (apparently, we both have a liking for Firebird-type guitars). In one of those exchanges, you described how a certain GMP 'bird (the one in the previously posted pic) came into your possession, and how the original owner (let's call him "JF") wanted you to just give it back to him (simply because he was JF...). Your response was likely appropriate in the most Ed Rechts of ways. Sending positive thoughts and energy your way for what you're going through. Being the "original MF'er" (as alluded to by your forum name's meaning explained by Kiz), it seems you are fully equipped to kick the s#@t out of this thing. Edited June 20 by singlehum 4 Quote

BruceM Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Happy belated birthday, Jay! I think that 1997 was the year I found the HFC, and it was more like 2001 or 2002 before I started posting. And it was June 2003 before I invited the first HFC crazies I would ever meet to my house; and October 2003 when I would attend the HFC Open House at the Hamer Factory. I met so many there that year. Ed Rechts was second to none in the rapier wit department. I used to look forward to all the back and forth, and consider myself lucky to have stayed out of the fray, for the most part. I was also fortunate to meet you, Jay, at one of the LA NAMM shows, 2005 or 2006, maybe? As I recall, you were with Mobby and Peter; all HFC royalty. I remember feeling fanboy awkward, in spite of the fact that I was hanging with Pam and the Cheap Chick gals. So many good times! I'll have to see if I've got any pics from that trip. I know I've got a few. The connections I have made here are still mind boggling to me. And I feel like I can travel the country and drop in on any number of good friends that I've met here. Fight the fight, my friend! Life is good (to quote Gene). 6 Quote

diablo175 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 (edited) I debated whether to share this little gem. Obviously, I decided it was relevant enough and too good not to share. As stated earlier, I missed out on the golden age of Jay’s hijinks. However, I bore witness to one pivotal bit of ER’s infamous, incendiary wit in his takedown of our erstwhile Studio Custom. Those who know/knew Joe, know full well how deserving he likely was of such an online beat down. I was privy to several other HFC dust ups involving Joe. And as entertaining as they all were, few if any, ended so conclusively and decisively as the one between Joe and Jay. But the real dividend that little skirmish paid out was in the form of certain videos being made available. Incriminating videos. Instructional videos. Cringe worthy videos. 🤣 IYKYK. I can neither confirm nor deny that Jay had a hand in the distribution of those videos. I will only say that they only became available after the epic Joe versus the Jay volcano. 🤣 Edited June 24 by diablo175 5 Quote
