I was 20 when the first Black Sabbath album was released, Had never heard anything like it--Osbourne's terrified howling on the title track was scary as hell  and the band probably didn't want it any other way. Moreover,  the cover looked like something from American International Pictures.

IMO that album wasn't the first heavy album, Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum forged that distinction over two years before the first Black Sabbath album.

But that first album  by the Sabs was the first "doom rock" album.

IRONY: Also-recently-deceased musician Mick Ralphs noted in 1993: "I think it's obvious is this business that a band is bigger than any of the solo projects its members might do."

IMO Ralphs' statement cited the premise that such a stereotype was applicable to famous bands that later regroup. If you transmogrify that line of thinking to someone who departs a band for a solo career. one wonders how many of 'em flop, but Osbourne was a huge exception to that line of thinking. Moreover the  post-Ozzy Black Sabbath led a number of lead vocalists, some only briefly to the point that they weren't publicized. While the solo Ozzy was in his prime, the Sabs seemed to have a bigger turnover rate than a pancake restaurant. Remember Jeff Fenholt? Didn't think so...

I will never forget how scared I was from watching the cover for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath when I was about 12.

First time I saw him was in 1986. With Scorps and Def Leppard. Their first gig since Rick lost his arm. Great gig, with Jake.

^^^ Depending on the year, any of those could be the headliner.

Assisted suicide.

Sadly that thought crossed my mind too.

Surprised she hadn't 'assisted' him sooner.

Huge Black Sabbath fan, but this album blew my mind!

I was doing FM college radio (10 KW) when that came out and luckily had complete control of my shows content. I played the heck out of it.  Many DJs were playing the new-edgy whatever it was at the time. I didnt care, and this album just screamed PLAY ME.

Hooked from the very 1st song!.. such a refreshing change to what was being played at the time "except for Van Halens 1st"

Here's a recording from my band's last show in 2003. We were so hammered because we knew this was it, and most of us had been in the band since we were sophomores in high school. The venue was packed with our friends from over the years, and we were having fun.

Our last song of our last set was "No More Tears," which, in 2003, was generally never heard in college towns because any thing from that era of metal was no where close to being cool again, not even ironically. We absolutely did not care though.

We all fucking loved Ozzy. This is not the best we ever played this song by a long shot. I think the band had consumed roughly a handle of Jägermeister by this point in the set, and you can tell. Steven botches the lyrics, Jake flubs the keys, and my slide was so sticky from spilled Jäger that it sounds like a flat tire.

But it was the most fun. Steven swearing through the interlude lines cracks me up to this day because you can tell he is just beyond the realm of giving a damn about anything. We rarely drank much at shows, and I can count on one hand how many times any of us were drunk on stage in 7.5 years. However, we knew it was our last show, and we were having a blast with about 100 of our closest friends from all over the south.

I guess I'll share it because I guess if I ever was, this is the day.

I certainly enjoyed that! Thanks for sharing.

I was never a big Sabbath fan, but I remember the exact intersection I was stopped at in my hometown when I heard Crazy Train for the first time.  I didn't even know the Sabbath members' names so if they announced it was by Ozzy Osbourne I wouldn't have know who that was.  When I found out I could hardly believe it because the music was so much better IMHO.  I know people put Ozzy Sabbath on a pedestal but I have always said the best thing that ever happened to the band or him was splitting up.  I like them without him, and him without them.  That said, I am very happy he was able to reunite with them and do it one last time, especially since Bill Ward was included.  It's a tragedy for his fans that he went so soon after that show but it could have been worse.  He could have died a week or two BEFORE that show.  RIP.

If you’re a metalhead, punk or mental defective… it doesn’t get much better than this.

I was at my best friend’s house smoking some weed and he put on the debut Black Sabbath album.  I was tripping balls.   I started buying Sabbath albums at flea markets if I found them.
Later, I was in metal shop when I first heard Blizzard of Ozz.   Totally blown away.  Man I’m old.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately. And cannot say what my favorite Black Sabbath song is, there are way too many songs to choose from, but out of the dozens and dozens of potential favorites, I find myself singing this most...

Also the live version

RIP OZZY🙏

This one. It's a full step-and-a-half higher than the other. How did that happen? Also, you can't understand a fucking thing Ozzy says in the beginning. Classic. Heavy riff.

Probably my favorite (later) BS songs/videos

My fave from 13 is Live Forever. When Ozzy comes in singing "Juuuust before you die!" it sounds just like classic Sabs
