sirDaniel Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Which of your axes attracts you to play it the most? Newest? The old comfy friend? Prettiest? most versatile? Tone? mood? Brand loyalty? Action?or is it good to spread it around so they all stay happy.I'm sure there are chemical releases in the brain that affect this topic.
cmatthes Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Location, location, location... Actually, there are two that I gravitate towards the most. It may be that they've got particularly eye-grabbing finishes, but I think the fact that they were put together/set up by the Master (Stike) has something to do with it . I really haven't had to touch a thing since I got either one back from him, and they only see the inside of a gig bag or case if they're leaving the house to get played.
Special J Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I would say whatever is closest is what I grab. If they're all around me, then mood is probably the biggest factor. Sometimes I go through phases where I only play my Hamers for a while, then just the Fendery stuff for a while.
MCChris Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Last one in (or last one modified with new pickups and whatnot) gets the most play. Then, a pretty regular rotation sets in.
serial Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Stability is a big factor for me. I have a few guitars that just NEVER go out of tune ('85 Phantom, '81 Sunburst, two Teles and my korina Vector are all rock stable). I have other guitars that I love, but depending on the strings, the humidity, the day of the week, position of the moon relative to the earth, etc, keep me constantly cranking the keys. I'm also a lot more prone to jump around with one that I can bang on. Maybe that's why my red '81 Sunburst is so whipped looking.
Guest pirateflynn Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I think feel, tone and action do it for me, but no doubt, I really do love the look of the electric guitar.
seeker Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Either the newest (to me), or one I just happen to pull out. One that I always go back to is my Korina Studio Custom.
SteveB Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Old Faithful. It just feels right to me. Great neck, great action, great balance, great sound. For me, this guitar/amp combination is the shiznit.
Travis Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 When I read the title of this thread I thought it should have belonged in the boobies thread in the O.C.Oh well....For me, I haven't grabbed anything else since I got my Talladega. I'm going to have to see how long it is before I pick up anything else. All that stuff you mentioned, that guitar has it in spades. And clubs, hearts and diamonds, too.
Caddie Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 #1+ Eclipse#2 Vintage S#3 Studio w/WCR Fillmores# All the rest get some lovin' every week, especially now that my daughter has picked up guitar. Her rotation is: #1+ Rickenbacker 370#2 Studio#3 Strat Plus
Camstone Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Since I re-aquired my Duotone from DavidE and replaced the Duncan P90's with Lollars, that guitar is easily my number 1 and gets the most playing time on stage. I did some studio work last week and had a bit of trouble with noise out of the soapbars, so I used my Newport, but the Duotone has "it". Plus the acoustic sound live is better than my Taylor.
Dumo Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Honestly, I play my daughter's crappy little First Act acoustic the most. It's fun to play. Other than that, which ever one of my two that has newer strings which would be my LP Jr. right now.
LordOfTheThighs Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 The music I'm playing dictates which one I pick, mostly. I keep my LP Classic Plus tuned half a step down, forthose times I wanna KISS, Sabbath, Aerosmith's Rocks CD, etc.For 440 tuning it's pretty much flavor of the week. I typically grab my R8 for playing Zep, but latelymy Korina Vector has been getting the call. Since I've sold off 3 guitars, my choices have obviouslybeen narrowed down.
mark_tampa Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Got a Roland GR20/GK3 combo a few months ago and set it up on a Warmoth EMG equiped strat I had laying around. I've been playing the heck out of it. The newest toy in the bunch so to speak. Usually the newest toy wins for awhile, then it usually goes back to the DuoTone or EBMM AL.I'm thinking about moving the GK3 over to my DuoTone or my P90 Artist. Its my first time playing around with midi and though that I should set it up on the strat to figure the midi thing out before defacing my Hamers. The cool thing about new toys, I've played more in the past few months having a blast with the GR20 then I've played in the past year or so. Now it's time to move the midi setup to a guitar I feel some love for and play that much more.Has anybody ran a GK2/GK3 on a DuoTone?
Brewmaster Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Still my SG Classic with the Lollar P-90's. If the neck was only fatter..... My Nash Tele and Strat are next.
earachemyeye Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 My Duotone. The action is higher so it makes me work a little. Then when I play my other it's like gliding on ice.Joe
Disturber Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I usually have three or four with reasonable fresh strings that I play. Then I put new strings on one of the guitars that´s been resting in it's case for a while and play that for some months. Dead strings, back in the case. Up with a new guitar, and so it rotates...
bbobb24 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I don't really have the choices that some of you guys have. I'd have to say that I grab my Osthoff acoustic first, probably because it was my only guitar for the last couple of years. However, if my lady friend is out and I have the house to myself I love cranking my Monaco.
Willie G. Moseley Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Ergonomics...to include weight, balance and string action, and how my back is holding up at that particular time.
lonote049 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 My 2-TEK CruiseBass sees more stage time than any of my other basses because of its killer tone, but the bass that sees the most playing time (stage time + practice time) is my Frankenstein P-Bass. It seldom sees the inside of a case. It has an aftermarket pickup (Fender Original '62), ancient Fender 9050 flats and a $20 e-Bay neck. It is remarkably stable; I have medium-low action and I have not had to adjust the truss rod or bridge since I installed the $20 neck more than 4 years ago. This is the bass on which I learned to do set-ups, fret levelling, nut filing, neck shimming, etc. It feels perfect to me and it sounds warm and wonderful like a P-Bass should. You never know when something magical will happen...and price does not necessarily enter into the equation.
Steve Haynie Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Whichever case is easiest to reach determines which guitar gets played most often. If I have to dig, I will go for one of my Specials. The shape is right for me.
BruceM Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Depends on who's around. If I'm alone, it's usally an acoustic. If I'm practicing with bandmates, it's my comfortable standbys, the T-51 or Newport and the Cruisebass, because they're the easiest for me to dial in that jangly tone I like so much. (For me, this happens most often of all these scenarios) If there's anyone else around, say at parties, whichever matches my outfit best, and often whichever hasn't made an appearance in awhile (in which case I'll dress appropriately). Note to to the fashion challenged, if you wear black or white or grey, almost EVERYTHING matches your outfit! Except of course, NEVER play a black guitar while wearing black. Your guitar may have the most awsome line, shape and design in the world, but if the line blurs against your body and you can't see it, so what? If I'm gigging, it's usually the T-51 or the Cruisebass, because they nail the tone I'm looking for with the music I play. I'll occasionally switch to a humbucker guitar in the rare event that I'm playing a song in which I butcher a lead.
Bloozguy Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I have nearly all mine out on stands and I do my best to rotate through them, but the sparkly orange Newport Pro I got from BruceM definitely gets grabbed the most.
Hackubus Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I always have kept some form of double cut Junior or my '62SG around the house to plunk on. Right now it's a Hysteric TV Yeller LP that's my TV watching guitar. They're light enough to not bother me or cut in my my belly when I'm sprawled out in my La Z Boy, and fit in my lap very nicely whilst I sit at the computer chair. For gigging, I try to rotate them all as much as possible. But there are two that stick out in my mind as getting the most usage. An Edwards LP Custom with 3 p'ups & a 2004 R8 Historic LP. The Edwards is just so friggin' fun to play. A lotta bang for the buck right there. The R8 is just perfect IMO. Right weight, sounds great, plays like buttah. I save the Hamers for gigs that are a little more 'higher profile' if you will. I actually baby the Hamers! Can't be banging my babies up in some of these dives we play.
