BadgerDave Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I love it! Reminds me of an old school Von Dutch motorcycle paint job. The only thing that doesn't thrill me is the "dirty" relic white pickguard. I'm thinking of substituting a relic'd black one. Yay or Nay?
thehikingdude Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I normally don't care for relics, but I dig that one. A lot!!! A black pickguard might make it even better, I'd give it a go!
geoff_hartwell Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I normally don't care for relics, but I dig that one. A lot!!! A black pickguard might make it even better, I'd give it a go! I hate to say it, because I think the "relic" concept is lame, but... that's really cool! Just my two cents, but I'd love the same body and neck with new (non-rusty/grimy) hardware. Good stuff! Geoff
BadgerDave Posted June 3, 2010 Author Posted June 3, 2010 Well... how does it play / sound? You're supposed to play these things?
velorush Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Well... how does it play / sound? You're supposed to play these things? As a rule, yes; but I'm typically so fully engaged in: 1. hunting for new gear, 2. selling old gear, 3. posting here, that I really never play my guitars.
Turdus Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Did Fender use black guards prior to the 70's?With the multiple paint jobs, I'm assuming that is 60's style. I think a black guard ain't gonna go with that.
prototype-fan Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Like some others above, I normally can't stand new guitars marketed as relics, but I like that one. Looks cool. Kind of reminds me of a melting strawberry sundae.
murkat Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Looks like a Nash.... yes? just take some naptha to the PG, that clean it up.
Thundersteel Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I vote for "Nay." But, I never really understood the relicing concept anyway. I'll relic my own--for free. But, it doesn't really matter what I think, does it? How do YOU feel about it? If you want it, then go get it!
DavidE Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I like Relics. Own 3. But this one would have to grow on me. Not sure I like it. Reminds me of a a Tyler finish actually.
Hackubus Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here. I'm firmly in the "Do Not Want" camp. But whatever churns yer butter pard, rock on!
ArnieZ Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Is that one of the John Mayer signature relics? ArnieZ
tommy p Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 With the black/white/red look, I'd say that's a perfect Badgercaster! I vote no on changing the pickguard. I like it as is.
Brooks Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 Like some others above, I normally can't stand new guitars marketed as relics, but I like that one. Looks cool. yep. i prefer "honestly relic'd" shit, and I'm not a strat guy and I HATE pickguards...but, i gotta give it up for this one. the black pickguard might not look as good;that white one picks up the white on the body. sexy.
Moose Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 Black pickguard goes better with what's left of the paint, but black would usually look silly with white pickups. However, that guitar's so fucking ugly it doesn't really matter. Might even look better with black and white. Sorta fits the "we can't decide what color to paint the thing" theme. I'd go straight black, not pearloid, though. That's too flashy. Why is it that "relic" guitars are always made to look like they were owned by someone who hated their instrument and treated it with NO respect? I guess that's an off-topic discussion for another place, though.
Disturber Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 It looks extremely comfortable, but i'd have it refinished.

He certainly respected his instrument, but played the hell out of it.
Moose Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 I may be totally wrong, but it seems to me that the relicing trend seemed to emerge around the time when Fender started to sell Stevie Ray Vaughn strats reliced to look just like SRV's beat-to-shit guitar. He certainly respected his instrument, but played the hell out of it.That would be something I'd call a replica. I'm talking about the general "relic" thing, as branded, where the guitar wasn't meant to be an art piece representing a famous guitar, just a generic guitar meant to look road-worn when it was brand new.People would say "Yeah, but I really like the way it feels, all broken in..." and that sort of thing. If it's just meant to feel old, then soften the edge of the frets, rub the finish where the arm contacts, rub the neck, and leave the rest in nice condition, right? But for cosmetics they seem to beat the Relic branded guitars at random with heavy objects, like the owners used to carry them to gigs on the bus without so much as a gig bag much less a nice hard shell case. Or like they stored their bicycle chain and lock in their gig bag behind their guitar when they pedaled to practice. As for SRV, he may have respected guitars, but #1 was used to the point where it was past ready to be retired. It had been re-fretted multiple times, and his tech said he wasn't able to even set it up for good action anymore. If it was owned by anyone other than SRV, I wouldn't pay more than the value of the pickups for it on the used market as it was rode hard and put away wet for a lot of years. For example, he used to lay that guitar on the stage, grab the whammy bar, and bounce the thing while fretting with his left hand. I saw him do it, once, and it was AMAZING showmanship, but really only a few steps short of doing a Who and whacking the guitar into your amps.I've dinged guitars. And I've worn out a guitar. But they're honest dings from a drunk climbing on the stage, a drummer trying to help when you're packing up, or a rub through from my arm when I used to play hard. Other than the teeth marks, a ding from a thrown bottle, general road wear, and yellowed lacquer, my first axe was still in fantastic condition when retired 16 years after I bought it.
hamerhead Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 the teeth marks I'd love to here that one....... Edited to add: Dave - I think Stike can fix that.
Moose Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 the teeth marks I'd love to here that one....... Not as glorious as it sounds. Playing a private party with a bunch of kegs. We were set up on a deck, so the "stage" was really only two steps above the crowd, and there were no bouncers for protection. Drunken idiot came out of the mosh pit and was running right at me. I lifted the guitar up as a defensive gesture and caught him square in the mouth. Split his lip open good, left a couple of nice incisor-sized marks in the end of the guitar, and the dumbass just sort of fell backwards onto the dance floor, popped back up, and kept dancing like it never happened. He was feeling NO pain that night. I guarantee he felt it the next day, though. It's been 20 years and I can still picture the front of his t-shirt covered in blood.
eightyfour Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Gotta say thumbs down. You've built way cooler shit than this.
m chops Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 Gotta say thumbs down. You've built way cooler shit than this.I've been looking at this for a while. I almost said I like it, but I don't. You have built a lot better stuff. But I have been trying to figure out why I keep looking at it. The colors are compelling. I finally figured it out - the colors are the same as my Vulcan 900. So yes, I like the color scheme on a bike, but I don't like a beat to heck guitar.
