elduave Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 It's all about one's personality and perception, and what they bring to the table when forming opinions. You're a cynic, I'm a romantic. Agreed, and guilty as charged. I'm still a fun guy to hang around with though! Absolutely! Next time bring some weed.
alantig Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I kind of took Grohl's message to be aimed at folks who might think you have to have AutoTune and 683 tracks of synths and 146 dancers to make good 'music'. I'm not really much of a Foo fan at all, but I respect the message. I didn't take it "Look - we did this all live to tape with one mic" or anything like that. Just that it wasn't tweaked to within an inch of its life.Speaking of docs and what they reveal, I lost a lot of respect for Metallica when I watched "A Year And Half..." and saw that Lars and the engineer went through and picked each individual snare hit and moved them around to comp the best ones together into one drum track. I've got nothing against editing and punching in, but even though he was replacing stuff he played, it was like it was a totally artificial construct (says the guy who's using Steven Slate Drums...)Alan
zenmindbeginner Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Falco Totally Falco. Falco just skates away from the police after buying blow... schweetness!!!!!
morningstar Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 That coke poster is so true and so sad. I guess some are tough enough to pay the toll for that kind of self abuse,.I like Dave Grohl. I always respected that he took on that dizzy cunt that Curt Kobain was married to.. What a grasping, vicious vexatious and nasty. Hole is right. Grohl's drummer is the shit.morningstar
cmatthes Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Agreed, and guilty as charged. I'm still a fun guy to hang around with though! This is a stone fact.

polara Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Another non-huge Grohl fan but I think he "suffers" from being a good musician into playing guitar rock but he's not a f-up. So, for being a hard nosed businessman who doesn't let himself get f'd over and controls his brand he loses "cred" in some people's eyes. The hair, the beard, the attitude, the catchy power pop tunes played with metal production, the taking no prisoners in business affairs...this kind of identifying your demographic and needs then delivering on message would be the hallmark of senior management or C-suite in any other business. Just like Kiss ran their brand well and Radiohead, Wilco, Lyle Lovett, Ani DiFranco do now.
earachemyeye Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 A stone fact indeed. I still hold that if Grohl is sincere in his judgement of the digital domain vs. tape there is only one road to travel. But he won't go there of course and why should he. It's not really a medium issue it's a monetary issue. Rock is getting squeezed big time by all the other stuff being put out. I was serious about Taylor Swift and giving her some credit for working on her singing skills. But calling her out for last years debacle and general inability to sing on key previously was not being mean, jealous or envyous as stated in the stupid song.. Just honest. What I find nauseating is how serious they all seem to take themselves at these awards shows. It's just entertainment folks. They're giving out awards for entertainment.YAY for them.
Thundernotes Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 So nice of them to keep it real by recording to tape with a microphone and make it all organic-like..... so I can download it from iTunes! Ah, maybe I give them a few points for trying to think about what it is they're doing, and why. I didn't watch the show as I find artist award shows a complete bore.
Hamer Time Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Here is his some mics and a tape recorder...http://www.fooarchive.com/features/electronicmusician11.htmNot exactly going back to basics. If not using Pro-Tools is going back to basics then the guy is clueless. A lot of high end studios record to tape then dump to pro-tools for editing and mixing. It just makes the engineers job easier not the bands, makes no difference to the band really.

HAMERMAN Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Grohl is infinitely better than Jeff Lynne, I'll give him that. Can you elaborate on this? Huge ELO & Jeff Lynne fan who is just curious if I missed something obnoxious that he did. :-)

FrankieIII Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Foo Fighters = big yawn..... Don't get it at all. Their songs are very one dimensional to me. Nothing memorable at all.A perfect testament to the state of the extremely boring music industry today.

FrankieIII Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I will sum it up by saying "Billboard artists during the '80s, across all genres, are substantially superior to Billboard artists today."
MCChris Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Can you elaborate on this? Huge ELO & Jeff Lynne fan who is just curious if I missed something obnoxious that he did. :-)More of an inside joke than anything else. But a personal bias for sure. Plus, he's responsible for some of the worst recorded drum sounds in the history of rock.He brought orchestral string instruments into rock music.Plenty of people did that before Honkyfro.

polara Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Well, duh. No matter who ya are or what century you're in, the music made when you were 18 was the best, your parents' music was boring, and your kids' music is noise.
