stratacus Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I picked up this 1980 Hamer Sunburst in Brooklyn yesterday. It plays and sounds fantastic and has no fret wear. It has finish checking, which I am completely cool with. The original tuners have been swapped out, but other than that is all original with no breaks or repairs. Edited on 4/7/2013 to include the build information from Serial below: Feb 22, 1980. "Black top-dark filler on back. 6" All original finish-very cool. "6" is the code for black. Not the earliest 1980 (there are 40 or so before that, but it's an early one). One of the last Holmes-era Sunbursts.
sixesandsevens Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Dayum. Did you talk him down from $300?/me cries a little.Congratulations though. I'll bet that guitar is all kinds of sweet.

murkat Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Very nice! I was not expecting the natch back! surprise! you will need a set of original saddles, looks like fender types replaced the keyhole saddles gotchya!
Drastion Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 This site is fun. Everyone sure has their eyes peeled for hamers. If a guitar sells fast its usually to someone on here. At least now I know it got into a players hand and not some silly collector. Has there been a count of hamer guitars owned by people on this board? Wonder how many are part of the HFC family. Enjoy that guitar she is a beauty.
Disturber Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Nice. I didn't know the blacks had all mahogany sides and back. Thought they were all black. That looks snazzy!
RichRS6 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 As we say in the U.K.You jammy bastard !Is it a custom order or could it be a refin as my blacks have black backs?
Toadroller Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Beauty! I was looking for the price on the copied add. Fell over. Good for you!
kizanski Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I didn't know the blacks had all mahogany sides and back. Thought they were all black. That looks snazzy! They didn't. In fact, that's the only one I've ever seen like that from that era.OP: You lucky bastard! You STOLE that guitar! Good for you!
G Man Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Damn man, you done real good. And I, as well as the others here, am green. Love the black over natural back.rock on.
hamerhead Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Hey - there it is! I was wondering if it would show up here. I had it at $600, then was out at $1000.Glad it got to an HFCer.
polara Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 So cool! That is one unusual finish... blacktop. Sure looks factory but I've never seen another Hamer that was black only on the top. Get some original saddles on there, maybe even scare up some old Schallers and RAWK!

Is it a custom order or could it be a refin as my blacks have black backs? I am fairly certain the natural finish on the back is original for the following reasons: 1) The factory serial number is stamped on the natural finish (see pic). 2) The area that was underneath the original tuners is natural, and the original screw holes show raw wood and have not been finished over. 3) The finish checking is consistent on both the back and top. The top has a few paint chips that do not show any evidence of it being previoulsy repainted, and it has finish checking on both back and top that is consistent with its age.

The seller indicated someone in Wisconsin had offered "a ton" for it, and she was getting bombarded by email inquiries. I did not ask what amount "a ton" was, and offered what I thought was a fair price based on the photos and serial number. I did not see the Craigslist ad before I left NYC for the airport. Otherwise I would have swung by and picked it up the afternoon it was listed.
RichRS6 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Looks like a custom order then. Now you have to update the Sunburst appreciation thread and the Custom order thread.
