rugby1970 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I want to refinish a '93 Special that is TV Yellow; not my cup of tea. Suggestions? Is it possible for you to post a pic of the finish you suggest/recommend?Thanks in advance to all who respond.I love this place!!
Hamer Dave Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 How 'bout adding some flames, or ?. Hopefully, you wouldn't have to strip the finish, and still change the thing.Otherwise... Black(or other dark metal flake) w/flames! Lol!
rugby1970 Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 The indigo flame thing is a strong candidate for me. I don't mind having it stripped; bought it with that in mind. How about adding a maple cap? Changing the bridge to a sustain block? The pups have to stay unless an upgrade to a different P90 is recommended but I do want it raw and nasty.
Hbom Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I've always thought this was pretty snazzy. Photo stolen from NTL Guitar
bubs_42 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 If its a 93 and in TV Yellow, there is no Maple Top under it. So a solid color or a trans would be in order. If your going to do a trans how about Honey or Tobacco Burst?
veatch Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Jazz burst, or do a maple vaneer and that open things up a lot...
Carl.B Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I love what Murkat did with that Special FM. Checkout Stikes website for some inspiration. http://www.rowycokustoms.com/RK_gallery.html I love this one.. Carl B
rugby1970 Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 Trans Orange Tobacco Burst That tobacco burst is gorgeous!!
Bloozguy Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 This is my '92 Special with an Eclipse-style forearm bevel and tummy cut...now sporting TV Jones Filtertrons and a sustain block bridge: Next it's off to Stike for a finish in Little Daddy Roth "Snocaine"
bubs_42 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 This is my '92 Special with an Eclipse-style forearm bevel and tummy cut...now sporting TV Jones Filtertrons and a sustain block bridge: Next it's off to Stike for a finish in Little Daddy Roth "Snocaine" I thought my projects took a long time. I will make it up to Minnesota sometime this year I hope. I'll be sporting two Phantoms in Murkat/Stike Fashion.
veatch Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 +1 for Strike. He does great bursts, too. If it were me (and it ain't), I would top it with a figures maple vaneer an send it to strike for a burst of some sort.
crunchee Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 gold metalflake, do it.. ) Do this Or this Do it!!!
Ralph Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Murkat re-finished the Special in my avatar. It was Tobacco burst.
sixesandsevens Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I've always thought this was pretty snazzy. Photo stolen from NTL Guitar Trans Orange I love both of these. I've also begun daydreaming about the "Dorothy's Slippers" finish Sike did recently for Jeff R.: http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/63975-match-dorothys-slippers/?p=690712
bubs_42 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Check out Stike's Website, then do a google image search for colors and you'll find something that will just jump out at you. My next adventure with Stike and Jay is coming along as I type. I told Stike this is what I want but I want you to Twist is up and he came through with flying colors once again.
rugby1970 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 I think I'll pass on the graphic finishes. I checked out Murkat and Stike on line - very nice stuff indeed. Any pics of the finishes y'all refer to? I love to see them on a Special. I have a black T51, a natural flame Studio and a vintage orange Newport and would like to see something in a burst, an indigo or a brilliant green. I'm a big man so I don't think the sparkle and checker board finishes suit my stature, personality or mediocre playing ability.
Steve Haynie Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Early 90's Specials came in TV Yellow, a dark burst with a name that escapes me, Cherry, White, Black, and Natural. Other finishes from the time were Aztec Gold, and Transparent Orange. If you are sure the TV Yellow is going to keep you from enjoying your guitar-- do you really look at the finish while you are playing?-- then what color would you have bought? With the consistent quality of Hamers from that time period you could possibly trade for another in a color you prefer. If there is still some indecision you can always paint question marks all over the finish until you make up your mind. Every Hamer refinished in Sea Foam Green gets oohs and ahhs.
dragan Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 how about a limed / white transparent like the tv would've been new not so much yellow , similar to this collings dbl cut http://www.collingsguitars.com/Instruments/?ID=69
JohnnyThunders Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I like white or black. That limed white is also pretty cool.
Punkavenger Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I really liked my transparent dark purple Special FM. Sounds weird at first but the color grows on you. Find a beautifully figured maple cap and you're set. It would be similar to the indigo pic that Hbom posted with a little more red n the color.
hamerhead Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Are you a car guy? Have it done in the same color as your favorite car.If they use salt on the roads by you, you could get a nice rustburst.
