  1. So, I went and did a thing…. I’ve always loved the look of Les Pauls and god knows how many rock gods and my personal influences have used them over the years. While I do like the bursts, they’re the classic look and what everyone thinks of when “Les Paul” is mentioned, I’ve always been partial to the elegant simplicity of ebony and cream. Classy. Like a tuxedo. I wasn’t planning on buying new. Wanted to try them out first. But, my guy at sweetwater made a close out deal on their old stock (it’s a 2023) and with their 55-pt inspection and 30 day “no hassle” return policy, I took a chance. Well, I must’ve gotten a good one. Cuz, if this isn’t a good one then I can’t imagine how much better a good one could possibly be. Feels great. Plays great. Sounds great. The burst bucker neck pickup may rival my Talladega DD as favorite neck tone ever. It sustains FOR-EV-ER…. Bridge pickup had some good chunk and does well with some rock rhythm a La Zep, Kiss, and AC/DC (I know, wrong Gibson)…. Not a finish flaw on it. Haven’t pulled the cavities yet to check the insides. Maybe at the first string change…

  2. ^^That is exactly it^^ No one could match the swing. These videos have fascinated me and I've watched them over and over again:

  3. Been there done that. Got myself a 50s neck cardinal red Standard in December. It is a beautiful guitar and the neck is just excellent and it's not too heavy, 4,2 kg. The finish and the frets are flawless, onyl thing I noticed later the trussrod cover is a wee bit off-center. I liked it too much already and the price was good. It sounds great and it is a joy to play. I did compare it to three others (another red one, a blueberry burst and an Inverness green one) and this one just stood out. My first proper guitar was a 1992 Les Paul Standard in ebony that I bought in....1992. I still have it. I heard they can be awful, too heavy, badly assembled etc. but they can be awesome instruments too.

  5. Picked up this Suhr Classic T used, but there’s not a mark or boo boo on it. Looks like an Alt T but isn’t. Looks new. Bought from original owner who custom ordered it. Chambered 2 piece swamp ash body with burl maple top. Thornbuckers, 5-way switch and push/pull tone pot for parallel bridge pickup. Pau Ferro fretboard, 10-14 inch radius. Neck is a comfy medium C, .840-.920. Just getting acquainted. So far so good.

  6. January is gone. It's time for the 4-3-2-1 tradition: Frozen Jam. I've got a few of the locals committed, so stop by if you're available. There will be pot of soup of some sort, and perhaps a wiener if the weather's not crappy. Spread the word!

  7. Yeah, an 8hr combined commute wouldn’t be my first choice for a new career, either. If I manage to get hired, I’m gonna have to relocate to Ft.Wayne from the west coast. Looking forward to those lovely, plains winters.

  8. For years I too labored under the notion that EVH's wow factor lay rooted in his blazing speed and ground breaking (or at least the codifying of) certain techniques (tapping harmonics, whammy bar, et al.) I overlooked his equipment experiments and more importantly, his feel. I mean, fuck it. He's the complete package as far as guitar gods go.

  12. It was offered here. No takers. And, yes, it's a gorgeous, amazing guitar.

  13. I wear my black long sleeve every night, when I walk five miles. It's filled with holes under the arms and is tattered. My wife says, "when are you going to let me throw that shirt away"? I ignore her...

  14. Indeed it was Tom's guitar. Here it is. A good friend knows Tommy Mandel who was kind enough to make an introduction for me. Enjoy.

  15. His rhythms chording and melodic solos are what impressed me. And his unique hooks. also the fills. Mainly he was a complete package.

  23. Rocking it. Not kicking it. Kicking it is something that most 85 year olds will eventually do.

  24. He's still kicking it at 85! He toured here in 2019, and has released 2 albums in the last 2 years. The man hasn't totally slowed down!

  26. I've really found a lot of his rhythm work harder to nail down than the solos in a great many cases. Like, I don't know any Van Halen solos note for note either, but this is largely a product of being in a band who is never going to cover Van Halen really. I tinker with them a bit and the realize "I'm going to woodshed something that I will never play for anyone else," and it kills my motivation because I wish that were not the case so much. But I have messed with enough of them to feel like I basically understood what was up. But, man, I have put in TIME trying to get the pre-chorus rhythm down for "Unchained" and still don't have it. It's a complete brain twister.

  28. That is my favorite color by far. Congratulations. I have been extremely pleased with my '19 50's and I agree on the pickups - first guitar I've bought that I didn't want to change. The only mods I've made to mine were changing to 50's wiring and, very recently, the Callaham locking tailpiece setup suggested in this thread.

  29. It only runs for 6 days here - Feb 6-11, three shows per day. At least it was at the IMAX.

  31. Congrats! There's hardly anything more \m/ RAWKNROOOOL \m/ than a black Les Paul standard.

  32. I only ever learned the basic intro chord sequence to Unchained. I never had a need to learn the entire song and kinda didn’t want to….if suck ass ME can replicate something than the magic goes away a bit..,but now I gotta learn the pre-chorus part @LucSulla references. This is now a motivator.

  33. Well, there was going to be a Mott the Hoople reunion tour around 2021 or 2022, and after tickets were sold the tour got canceled because Ian had tinnitus. Ian can still write and record music. Playing shows... let's be happy for the shows we were lucky enough to see.

  35. It's so glorious when that kicks in. I've spent hours going through different live versions to find which one turns into the best perfect, boozy rock n' roll mess.

  39. ETA: NO SPOILERS! Just got back from the theater - if you have even a passing interest in Led Zeppelin, GO SEE IT! It has a very 'feel good' vibe to it, the sound/mix is great (at the IMAX. The thunder in Bonham's foot.....), and it covers a lot of ground up through Led Zeppelin II. It is well paced and seems short for a 2 1/4 hour documentary. My wife, who is not really a huge fan or anything, said she could have watched for a couple more hours (that's really saying something!). I hope they do a 'Part II', covering the rest of the catalog. I'd go in a heartbeat. Go see it! 👍👍

  40. I didn't play much guitar 'out' (or much at all) over the past 1-13 ish years, I had been using a tech21 t-60 prior to that, so no need for a pedalboard back then. I got the FlyRig a year-ish ago, started experimenting and adding to it, with pawn shop finds. Very recently I found a nice 16x22 Pedaltrain case with velco'd board, I was going to resell it (along with the pedals it came with), but started thinking it might be really handy and useful. It's battery powered, The Joyo battery pack is pretty neat, it ran great for 2 hours last night and the battery level indicator did not go below 'good'/high, - I love not having to run a power cord to it. Those are only about $65 on Amazon. The flyrig's distortion isn't my favorite, but it does work well with other drives into it, and it 'stacks' pretty well with other drive pedals. I'm really liking the Plexi deluxe. The Ekoverb is really fun, those are pretty cheap too, I like it better than the reverb in the fly rig, it has 'tap' and 'hold' which is pretty fun. I like the MXR chorus, I send that to my monitor amp (which I often mic) and the 'dry' out from the flyrig to the board. I would like to find a EX Stereo Electric Mistress to try out, I have a big old Deluxe Elect Mistress, but it's a little awkward to include with this setup.

  43. I’m a big fan of the JMP Eleven. Great pedal, really brings the Marshall snort, but is really usable. I’ve had a Black Zendrive and a Red Moon and I’ve maybe tried them each once.
