polara Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 A friend in Sweden asked me what it’s worth. He owned it and signed it. Her company is going to auction it for charity so I’ll share the link when it’s up, but anyone have any ide of expected sale price?
burningyen Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 A lot would depend on whether there's any evidence he used it for a particular recording or show. If so, then I could see a deep-pocketed mega-fan like Billy Corgan shelling out $200k-$1M for it. If it's just something YJM owned, then I'd think it would go for more in the $50k-$100k range. But I'm not a YJM guy and could be vastly underestimating the demand.

If that doesn't come with a pair of his stretched-out leather pants and a lifetime daily Krispy Kreme subscription, I'd peg the value at significantly less than $20k, and even then, only for an Yngwie mega-fan.
kizanski Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 A must have if one hopes to release the fowkin' fury.
Steve Haynie Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Most auction sites show an estimated value. Then the auction happens, and the winning bid is far beyond the estimate. The low estimate could be there just to make more people think they can get in a winning bid. Yngwie has been photographed with a literal pile of Strats. Ownership does not necessarily mean much. Like @burningyen said, if the Strat went on tour or got used in a video it will have more appeal. The better the documentation, the more desirable the guitar will be to a fan. What year is the Strat? It looks like it has a 70s headstock. Start with a price for a similar Strat that is not celebrity-owned. Is the fretboard scalloped? That would make it a lot more appealing as an Yngwie Malmsteen owned instrument.

Kind of like Paul Stanley selling "stage played" PS-120s for 8K?

Yup it’s scalloped, and his signature model. Apparently the owners of the company know him. I’ve asked my friend if she can get more on the provenance. I’m really clueless… as he’s alive, not quite on the Gilmour level of fame, and might sign a lot of stuff, I was imagining more like $5k. I mean I own a custom shop Framus that’s genuinely unique, made for Earl Slick, with his letter and a print Framus ad of him playing it… and it was 1600 bucks I’m into Bowie and not YJM though, so worth is in the eye of the buyer.
Biz Prof Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 IMHO, the only thing Yngwie owns that would be worth a purchase price of $100k or more would be his house or one of his Ferraris.
P Franco Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Throw in some scalloped potatoes and you’ve got yourself a bidding war!!!
HamerCustomEr Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Before you bid, watch this video about how Yngwie treats his guitars: Fast forward to 2:15 if you want to see a little bashing around.

"Here's one of the first strats made." Pulls a 54 strat out of a literal pile of strats.

Hey I'll give him credit in that he just plays stuff rather than keep it in a warehouse. As far as the auction item, I guess the question is how much extra money does the average Yngwie fan spend on extras? And like others have said, is it something he can be seen playing in a photo for a show or recording? They look like ones Fender sent him, he signed them and shipped them out to this auction or just gets some every so often and that's what these are? He beats stuff up, and there aren't any marks on them. But then again, there are guys who buy 50 Steve Vai model guitars etc. And let's not forget how many guys seemingly devote their lives to buying old Marshalls, script Phase 90s and Echoplexes to recreate the first VH album tone. So, to me, it's hard to guess.

Yeah, I was going to try to make a joke estimating value based on its depth in the well-known pile when I read the OP, but now it's really not seeming so funny to me. Good luck to the charity, and caveat emptor.

HSB0531 Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Can anyone please tell me why someone would want to scallop a fretboard? I used to call him "Ying-Yang Malmstuck"

My favorite part is around 5:45 - 6:00. clang... bump... bang... and Neil Schon gave me this... In fairness they're his guitars and he can pile them up and pull them out of the pile anyway he wishes.. Why not, someone will still pay 50K for one of them.

Oh I didn't even watch the videos, but yes, he can ask Fender to design to spec. and use anything he wants.
