Dickey Betts Dies at 80

RIP, Dickey. He was an amazing player and talent.

He lived an incredible life and was a massive musical influence on so many people. So many great songs and solos. With this I think the only founding member of the Allman brothers band is drummer Jaimoe.

Not my style of music but I acknowledge the talent and the influence he had on so many others. And it always hurts to see so many from that generation, my generation, leaving this existence with not a lot of players in line to fill the void.

Hard to believe he was 80. Not bad for some of the hard living, but too soon. The days when a Les Paul and Marshall was not only hard rock. Wail on!

One of the few players whose solo career or side project material was just as interesting as the music he made in his original band of acclaim

But his melodic and often upbeat Allmans material was a perfect counterbalance to Gregg Allman's world-weary blues. I dare you to listen to "Jessica" and not pat your feet.

I went through a rather obsessive Allmans phase in '92-'94.  Got my first Hamer during that era, too.

I like to play cover tune solos note-for-note, and the two songs my band played in which the solos got the most enthusiastic responses were "Blue Sky" and "Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 2".  Neither are burners.  Both are great melodic pieces of music. They deserve to be rendered just as recorded.

When I was getting my Les Paul back a few, his Goldtop had me considering that finish. It looked and sounded so good in his hands.

Such a vast catalogue it is hard to know where to begin. I have a small CD box set with the later albums with Warren Haynes. And this morning I had Live at the Fillmore in my headphones on my way to work.

That's another of Dickey's accolades: He brought out and schooled the then young, today great Warren Haynes.

WH described his assortment of amps with Dickye's Soldano being so loud, only another Soldano could withstand on stage.

A further aspect of DB's influence (dirty word, innit?) on musical history.

And: What he'd done for the sales of LP Goldtops and Sunbursts, we can only guess.

Anchored one of THE best live albums ever.  That alone was enough to get him to Heaven, but he carried on for 50 more years.  Thanks for the memories. RIP.

I've never been the biggest Allman Brothers Band fan in the world, but really admired Dicky's playing.  He was so melodic doing his hexatonic thing.
