One day someone is going to ask me to play some rock-a-billy. There needs to be a Gretsch in my arsenal. One day I will master flamenco guitar, which requires a guitar made for flamenco rather than just a nylon string classical style that is necessary for playing baroque parts in prog rock songs. There are times that a seven string guitar with a locking tremolo bridge is required. One must be ready for that at all times. Only a Telecaster will play those classic country licks. The reason for multiple Les Pauls is that with different pickups in each of them you can get the tones of far more famous guitar players, and everyone notices that. One needs an OM or 000 sized guitar because the volume of a Dreadnaught is not always necessary. A Stratocaster is a must for half of the classic rock I play. A 335 is different from a 355, and you really have to have both to play Allman Brothers and Rush music. You cannot expect me to play gypsy jazz on a guitar with a scale length less than 26 inches. A dozen Hamer guitars barely establishes the wide range of musical applications they were made for.

My wife used to give me a hard time about it. "Why do you need so many guitars? "Why do you need so many shoes and handbags?" "The shoes and handbags don't cost nearly as much as your guitars!" "Can you sell you shoes and handbags for a profit when you're done with them?" That usually ended the discourse.

I've reached an age where I am starting to plot in my head that at some point in the next couple of years, I need to start doing what you've been doing. 47 guitars (9 Hamers for the scorekeepers) and assorted amps/effects etc all crammed into a one-bedroom condo has been great fun for me, but nothing goes on forever. At least the condo is paid for and I don't 'have to' do anything until I want to.

I like ice cream, pretty much all flavors. I can't image only eating one flavor for the rest of my life (unless it was orange pineapple - maybe). Teles are orange pineapple to me, but I still enjoy Hamers, Les Pauls, Strats, and even basses lol. of course, if you are lactose-intolerant then this analogy probably doesn't work for you.

I realize it may not be comparable to the Carr except that both are small low-watt amps. Had that happened a week earlier I would not have gotten the Carr. To be clear, I'm glad it worked out that way! Studio apt w/thin walls and now THREE tube amps to choose from! 🧠

The elusive Dumble amp tones. Whatever that means to you..... There have been multiple threads about all this. One more now is available.....JHS has come out with a "DIY" version called the "Notadumble" that is pretty darn good for the price. At $119 (plus shipping and tax). It does NOT have tubes and does not have the many finetuning controls of such as the Ethos versions. What it does have is the simpler 4 control function of such as the Zen Drive as well as a separate preamp/boost or whatever you call it. To me it more or less emulates the in/out OD section of the D type amp, inc such as the Fuchs ODS. Use one or the other or both. (Plus an FX loop with TRS). It IS DIY so you assemble yourself. Very simple. All parts provided aside from a screwdriver and pliers. No soldering, etc. Quick and easy. Even comes with a tube of "Goop" in event you want to make it more authentic. Had to try it. I am pretty impressed. Stuck it in front of my Swart SST (which I consider one of my favorite amps of all time). A wee bit of finetuning to sort out "my tone" and balance the two sides to sit right on top of the amp's stand alone tones. Works great for me. Better than I expected, actually. Not that I needed another variation, but for a simple grab and go.....It will not replace my Ethos CFD Or Effectrode SR-71, but it ain't bad. And it also does not cost $600. A very simple pedalboard with this, a board mounted power amp (the Carvin is not bad for their low price!) and one or two pedals in the loop. Small, light and an easy in/out for setups. And probably less in total than the cost of the CFD alone. I just might try that this weekend. Would it be better (as in more tweakable) if it had a full tone stack instead of one tone and one presence? Yeah. BUT I was able to get to the tones I want very easily. Certainly quicker than the 23 knobs and (2-3 way) switches plus 4 footswitches on the CFD. Def learning curve there! Worth consideration..... BTW, they also make a DIY "Notaklon". I have NOT given that a try.

an HFC brother once told me he wanted to have one guitar for each year he's on the planet; I agree but I might have a rather optimistic expectation of my lifespan lol. some guitars are like postcards from a prior era in my life; every time I pick up a Jem it takes me back to the DLR days with Vai and Sheehan (I still can't hang with the tunes, but I think I'm getting a little closer). When I pick up a Standard (usually Shishkov) I can't help but play some Cheap Trick. Sometimes a guitar calls your name, and I end up losing myself jamming along with the stereo. It changes from day to day, and I like having a few choices (of course there's the day the Epiphone Casino went from Sgt Pepper then into the Heaven and Hell album; mrs stonge was just shaking her head when I told her which guitar I was using). Random Access Ed as I say...

Its fun, thats why. I go thru a few guitars every year, I evaluate and enjoy them for awhile then move 'em on. I never have more than 5 at a time. They are all temporary, except my Ibby AS50, that a keeper.

I could vacation in the Bahamas. But thats gone in a week. I've had some guitars for decades, and could sell them for more than I bought. Can't sell a 25 year old vacation.

To a non player someone that has many guitars seems excessive. This was expressed to me that I was a guitar hoarder. I explained to them I am not. First I let them know that I've been playing guitar for over 60 years. So some of them are sentimental, like my Bruno Conquerer that I played my first gig with at 12 years old doing my best to sound like Jimmy Hendrix. On a hollow body Bruno and a Monkey Wards Tube amp. Then I continued that I had probly owned 100's of guitars and these that I have had something special. Be it the tone the way they played, they where just better than the others that got moved along. Then came the "Why do you need a $5000.00 Dollar Guitar" I explained that I wanted to try it too see what all the fuss was about(Novo Miris J). Well it's gonna stay and Now I'm going to buy a Novo Serrus J. Why??? Because I can! My daughter inlaw just shook her head and left. She'll really never understand. But she gets that I'm not getting rid of any. Just adding! Any one else get the Why do you need so many Question?

My guitar broke a string, so I bought a new guitar. Someone told me you can just change the string. I wish they’d mentioned that about 48 guitars ago.

Technically, I do believe you are allowed to re-import USA goods and avoid tariffs, at least under older rules. However, good luck getting a Japanese shipper to properly fill out Customs forms so that it gets through without tariffs being applied. Perhaps buying directly from a store gives you better odds. But I would not count on it. I have been able to successfully get FedEx to remove import duties on a US Hamer, but that was years ago and I had been billed for those duties and chose to fight the bill. However, these days, duties/tariffs are paid upfront prior to being released. So now the fight is asking a company to refund tariffs already paid. Again, good luck. If I were buying this guitar (I'm not), I would just factor a 15% tariff (about $260) and, if the price was still acceptable, just plan on paying it. If after the fact, you were able to avoid the tariff or get refunded, good on ya.

I compare how much I've spent on guitars (which has been surprisingly small given the return on the ones I've sold) and it is *far* less than a speedboat, a vintage muscle car, or even the car I'm currently driving would cost new. Hell, my buddy has spent more on his snowmobiles than I have in guitars. These are all fair things to spend money on. If you earn a living, you should have some say in what the "living" part means.

The brief explanation is that "pants" is short for "pantaloons," which were initially a style of trouser but, in America at least, became sort of a catch all even after pantaloons fell out of style. Trousers were for quite some time a separate kind of leg covering held together at the top by a belt or some buttons. Part of the function of a cod piece was to provide an additional layer between your junk and the world since there was often a gap where the two met. A trouser for each leg was a pair of trousers. This breeches (britches), drawers, pants, slacks, etc. all have this plural form due to this history.

Closest I've ever been to having a Charvel is one of these, Wayne-designed. Interesting guitars. Looks very much like this: Not sure how long he lasted there, or if it was just a contract gig, or what the real story was with them. He certainly had a profound effect on the guitar world. When I worked in a store here like 25 years ago, we had a 'Wayne' guitar that was covered in a shell material. I remember it being rather cool.

A candy red or Pelham blue would look good with that binding. Are you going to use one of those locking nut replacements? Or, just install a standard OFR?

Thanks for the replies! I use 10"s on everything and so I'll stick with those. I haven't owned a Floyd in 25 years ! This was very much an impulse buy as I've always liked that model and I love Hamers. Got my first hamer about two years ago ... Talladega Pro, which is a really great instrument. I lean very much towards traditional stuff so this SS is a very out there for me but I figured I'll have some fun with it. I really can't believe the condition it is in , according to the pics I got. Apparently it was purchased and never really played ... no fret wear and no damage whatsoever. For whatever reason, most SS guitars you see are beat to crap. From the serial number , I believe it was made in '85. 22 fret, strap button on upper horn, red with black hardware (the black hardware looks basically new which is really rare). I'm not 100% positive about scale length but I'm guessing it's more the Gibson 24 3/4" as I read Hamer put out a 25 1/2" version later (please correct me if I'm wrong). Here are some pics from the seller. Guitar is in transit.
