Hamerhack Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 If you could be absolutely world class, top of the heap at only one instrument...(Assuming you aren't already!)What instrument would you pick?I guess I'd go with piano. (Which I can clunk out chords on, but that's about it).
polara Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Piano, without a doubt. So useful, the doorway to composition and arrangement.
maxschrek Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 When I saw the thread title I thought piano, thenI see Poe's post. Im with him, having a masterfulsinging voice would definitely open a lot of doorsfor me. Piano would be second.T
cynic Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 While I'd love to master the piano, I'd go with guitar simply due to the portability factor.
hamerhead Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Guitar (DUH!!!!). It can be more expressive than voice or piano.
Steve Haynie Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Being able to sing takes you anywhere you want to go. You can pick your band members. There is always work for a studio singer or backup singer. A great singer can go far. A vocal master does not even need other musicians to have fun.
Grimm Pickins Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Violin (5-string & electric included) and Uillean Irish Pipes. I tried violin and was scared away from the Irish bagpipe by a friend who plays. I hate stringed instruments that I can't "figure out" in a few hours (I play mandolin fairly seriously, so violin fingerings were no problem but that DAMNED bow). I'd like to say voice, but any attention I've ever gotten has been by singing "badly". Tom Waits, Screamin' Jay, Death Metal - that's not good voice work, it's emotion. So, I fear, if I sang well I'd suddenly be singing stuff I could care less about Dave
DaveH Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Jews harp. Or maybe kazoo. Seriously though, this: Guitar (DUH!!!!). It can be more expressive than voice or piano.
HamerHokie Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Hammond B-3. Guitarists are a dime a dozen - B3 players are gold.
Feynman Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 For personal reward, classical guitar would be it, followed closely by cello. If it were about success/recognition/money, I'd go with electric guitar. I want to play arenas and sleep on piles of money and cocaine with lots of chicks - then later clean up and enjoy my bazillionaire status and sell out to Guitar Hero and Gibson.
Caddie Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Veatch, I gotcha covered on Master of the Butt Trumpet. 3-tones 4-seconds. try THAT without a change of gear. My younger brother and I are both blessed with the same gift. Our duet of "America The Beautiful" is legendary. However we do not feel we get the pub we deserve. Its unfair that our "airtime" is usually during a commercial right before Lee Greenwood sings at Indy or Daytona or The All Star Game. Maybe with Tiger out we can get a US Open gig. Even better, howz 'bout behind Faith Hill on the Sunday Night Football Opening?!Please, no pyrotechnics within 50yds of the performance area. caddieVoice, followed by nose harp and butt trumpet.
veatch Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 LMAOI've found that while the traditional burrito helps in the projection, shellfish tend to give me a more "woody" tone.Veatch, I gotcha covered on Master of the Butt Trumpet. 3-tones 4-seconds. try THAT without a change of gear. Siaip Ciuvas Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Drums. Love 'em and would be able to blackmail the band if not going my direction.
RacerX Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Piano, like this... and this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khJaHNocYK0

gorch Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Drums as a young kid, guitar today. I truly respect voice, that is a living instrument and one you cannot hide yourself behind it.
