mc2 Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 I guess it IS a graphic that only TV/video geeks can appreciate. Same here for me....decades on-air in radio/TV and video editing, so I like it. I also noticed that it looks a bit like my avatar I was hoping it was made for Tom Verlaine or Richard Lloyd of the band Television, when I first spotted it. But I still think it's a clever graphic for a band that had a TV show. Probably was a bit more recognizable before the laquer yellowed with age. Definitely screams 80s....I could've seen this in Ric Okasak's hands in the 80s Cars and thought it cool.
velorush Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I love it! To me it's even more interesting as more and more grow up not knowing what a test pattern is and what non-24 hour TV was like.
murkat Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Fug.If the striping was more orientated to the body of and a black headstock, maybe.
specialk Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Kool!32 years in Master Control/Engineering here. SMPTE bars rool!
kenjones Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 25 years for me. I was in live broadcast for the first 2-3 years but realized I liked single camera field production better. I do about 98% corporate work nowadays. I direct multi-camera webcasts 3-4 times a year so I get a little bit of that old excitement.
killerteddybear Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I like it. There are a lot worse looking instruments out there. They kinda missed on the headstock color though.Don't know why, but I think it would look better on a bass!
singlehum Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I kinda dig it. I agree that a black headstock would look waaay better.
specialk Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 They kinda missed on the headstock color though.Ya gotta be able to white balance the damn thing, lol.
kizanski Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 All Hamer graphics are intrinsically cool. That one is even cooler. The perfect guitar for Mardi Gras! The only criticism that I have for it is that the 3x3 headstock doesn't belong on that body shape, and it never will.
mc2 Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 They kinda missed on the headstock color though.Ya gotta be able to white balance the damn thing, lol.EXACTLY!!! It is SOOOO obvious that the headstock SHOULD be black......that it then becomes obvious that it was done like this to be a WHITE BALANCE CARD for the TV video cameras. GENIUS!!! Again, something only the video geeks would get. That makes this wacky graphic even funnier. I wonder if there is some old TV footage of the show with the camera crew actually using the guitar to color balance the cameras?Too bad they didn't do some six on a side headstock or even a Standard headsock.....but I suspect this more square-ish headstock was closer to a white card shape/size.
crunchee Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 The back of the guitar has this on it: Like I said before, I wouldn't mind this on a guitar...but I'd prefer it on the front, I think nearly everyone knows or can tell what it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Head_test_card
psc3251 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Jesus....specialk a TV dude too!! The ultimate forum indeed...... "They kinda missed on the headstock color though." "Ya gotta be able to white balance the damn thing, lol." Ha, ha ha......the amount of times I've been caught without a white reference!!!!!! Brilliant Cheers Dave
BubbaVO Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Definitely not pretty. But considering the context, definitely cool.
svl Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Okay, I've reversed my decision. After having to look at it over and over (I can't stop clicking on the thread) and thinking about the lineage, now I want the damn thing.DAMN YOU, HAMER FORUM!!!!So, who has a line on where it went, and what it sold for?
Jason01 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Without knowing the history I'd say fugly, after hearing the story I like it.
bubs_42 Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Dig it once I read the correlation to the TV test pattern.+1
Cary Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Ugly, but the fact it was connected to Steve Dahl makes it cool. Steve and Gary on WLS in the mid 80's were the funniest DJs ever. IMO. IIRC, Steve Dahl also was responsible for the infamous "Disco Demolition" riot at Comiskey Park.
Disturber Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Freaky cool 80's art. I want it on my wall.
