Rodan Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 REALLY rotten luck! Hope you're covered all around and get the shop back together, without too much delay. What else? Just hope old boy learns a bit of a lesson, somehow...maybe gets the younger ranks of the family to get into the chauffering act.I once saw a little compact hatchback hit the rear 1/4 of a huge, Olds Electra in an intersection and spin it one time. No other impact. The Olds retaliated, ramming the little car at maybe 2 - 5mph. Bad form, right? OK. Driving the Olds was a little old guy who could barely walk and his wife. In the little car, it was a woman with 2 little kids in the back seat...Big +1 to driver re-testing, after a certain advanced age. Then again, how would the wording of a question covering this interaction go...?
hamerhead Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 It was a smash and grab! Just where are all the Picassos that used to line the walls?!?Old people. Can't trust 'em.
Lockbody Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Whoa! the HFC is blocked at my new job so I didn't get to see this yesterday. Sorry to hear about it and I hope you get everything back in shape ASAP.An 85yo old lady took out my Miata (and almost my wife and daughter) last year."I'm so sorry sweetie. I just didn't see you."
Traveler Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 this may stir the shit but man, what 85 yr old needs to be driving? imo that's just plain reckless.Btw, just went thru this with my 80+ yr old gma who fought like a f'n wildcat when we wanted her to hang up the keys for good, driving is a privilege not a right. every Friday I shit you not I could almost expect to see new dents in her car but we relented as she was so upset by loosing her independence and not a month later she plowed into the rear of someone. car was gone the next day.glad nothing more than replaceable goods were damaged at this guys store and everyone was ok.
Steve Haynie Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 An 80 year old woman pulled out in front of my Taurus a few years ago. It was like slow-motion as it happened. My car was totalled officially, but it is still on the road with its new owner. The old lady's reaction over having an accident was, "My kids are going to kill me!" Now all the old people are riding around in golf carts, getting even closer to pedestrians and driving where their cars never would go. In another thirty years we are going to be posting threads here that start off with, "I wanted to check out some new gear, so I drove into the music store today..."
backinit Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Truly sorry that this happened to you and hope it gets sorted out quickly and put behind you.He probably had his blinker on from a few miles back.
elduave Posted April 28, 2012 Author Posted April 28, 2012 The 85 year old man was parked! It's essentially parking spot--->curb (handicapped and ramped where he was)--->store front.
ArnieZ Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Dave, sorry about your store hope it all turns out ok!!ArnieZ
silentman Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Wow. I was inside a verizon store a few months ago when an old guy nearly drove through the doors.
BTMN Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Weekly occurance in Tampa Bay it seems, especially mid October to mid April, when the snowbirds are here.
Hfan Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Sory for your trouble. Thank God no one was in the store when it got hit. Hope the insurance covers it. Do they compensate for lack of busniess during repairs?I had an older lady hit me head on in Sept, came into my lane on a local hway almost killed me in my little Mazda, air bags saved my ass. She told the cop it was my fault! Luckily I had a good officer, gave her a careless driving summons and basically called her a liar in the report. Still going to docs (and my attorney).
veatch Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 The 85 year old man was parked! It's essentially parking spot--->curb (handicapped and ramped where he was)--->store front. I'm assuming it was an older model car that didn't have the "must have foot on brake to remove from park" feature.GM had a rash of "spontaneous acceleration" lawsuits until they put the lock on the tranny to prevent from shifting out of park without your foot on the brake. If someone has their foot firmly planted on the accelerator and shifts into gear - a lot of havoc can result...As said above, i'm very sad to see this, but big picture - i'm glad no one was hurt. Get an artist to paint the board with something cool. Try to get a few splashes in the paper. Might be good for business. Lemons and lemonade, and all...Hope everything works out well for you and quickly.

Try to get a few splashes in the paper. Might be good for business. Was a brand new car, still had temp tags. Good idea about the artist! No really keen on getting in the paper due to the possibility of parents with small kids getting weird about coming in, but that artist angle might be worth it.
rj2858 Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 As I think was mentioned on day 1 of this thread, great time for a "scratch and dent" sale.I can see the sign painted on your 'board up' now;'DEALS SO GREAT, THEY'RE KNOCKING DOWN THE DOORS'or'DOOR BUSTER SALE GOING ON NOW'
Steve Haynie Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 A giant Hendrix painting would be cool. If you could work out something with a local artist willing to donate his time you could raffle off the painted wood for charity when it is ready to come down.
specialk Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I bet it was a Buick.A silver Buick no doubt. Gotta watch out for those ones!
mail4kev Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Oh man. I just saw this. Hope everything works out ok. Glad no one got hurt.Kev
burningyen Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Yikes, hope this all gets sorted out quickly. Old people need to play more video games.
tommy p Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 That's a common accident with old people. They mean to push on the brake pedal, but they actually step on the gas pedal. This happens quite often. PS: Inventors around, there's maybe a business opportunity there? Some car company has already worked on this (possibly Toyota) but it's for stepping on both pedals at the same time. It's a system that disengages the accelerator if the brake is pushed, the idea being that the brake should have precedence. People that ride the brakes while driving annoy the hell out of me. Once I was behind someone on the highway that was doing it. Why on the highway??? At some point they must have gotten behind me because later they passed me, brakes on, accelerating.
