The Hamer of mattress sets?

Question

Posted

Man I miss the old mattresses - lasted 20 yrs and they were still comfortable to the point you could get a decent rest on 'em.  I've had to buy two sets for wifey and I in the last 8 yrs (one Sealy, one Serta) and they both sucked ($800 for one, $1,200 for the other) - retain heat, body indentations after a few months, sore neck/back, etc.

We're now desperately needing another so how/where do you buy a good one these days?

You get 100 days to figure out if you like it. If not, send it back. For that reason alone it's worth checking out.

They are really well made. I like ours a lot and when the time comes will get another.

We're in the same boat.

I have investigated Sleep Number, Reverie, everything I find advertised and all I've ended up with is confusion.

Amazing, there are no longer mattresses; everything has suddenly become a "sleep system."

I'm about ready to go Gilligan and set up a hammock between a couple of bamboo poles.

How long have you owned it now?  Any noticeable body compression/indentations apparent yet?

Tangentially speaking, do you realize it's been at least thirty years, probably more like forty, that radio personalities have been "endorsing" mattresses?  I'm pretty sure I recall Paul Harvey shilling them, and if you turn on any nationally syndicated talk show, your host will tell you how they've finally found the perfect night's sleep.

I prefer bourbon.

The reviews are all over the place in + /-, even one there site.

If weight of individual was a factor (and it is) the weight of individual should be included in review.

Wife says it's well over a year, and it's like the day we bought it - no dips (slow pitch for ya) anywhere.

We had shopped mattresses that were as high as $2500, and the day this one came I laid on it for the first time and instantly said it was going back. It was hard as a rock. Like 'hotel bed' hard. Then after about 2 minutes it starts to conform to your shape and gets really comfortable. Not squishy and not a rock, but firm with full body support. Whatever the foam is that they use, it really works. And the wife doesn't roll down hill anymore into the crater left by my lardass (I'm roughly 215). She's about 100 lbs lighter and sleeps like a rock. My back likes it more, too.

It's not built like a regular bed and it might take a night or 2 to get used to it, but give it a chance.  After a couple weeks you won't go back.

I know this much, I AIN'T EVER buying another one-sided spring mattress that you can't flip. What a scam!!!

I agree; unfortunately, flippable mattresses are getting harder and harder to find.  :(

sleepopolis.com is a site that reviews numerous direct-from-manufacturer mattresses.  The reviewer is only 140 lbs. (about 60 lbs. south of me), so the reviews aren't always applicable.  But, IMHO, there is still some good comparison info on the site.

The Purple mattress is interesting to me because of the hyper-elastic purple top layer.

The Helix mattress has the option of having one have designed for you, and the other half designed for your sleep partner.

No affiliation with the site or any mattress manufacturer.

Hamerhead, maybe you can compare the Leesa review with your own experience?

The wife and I have been sleeping on a no-flip Stearns & Foster for a little more than six years.  Tax took it over $2k new, and sleeps as well now as it ever did.  There is a very minor impression where I normally sleep, but I can move a bit in either direction and not feel any lean at all.  I float 20lbs either side of 260, so I can't expect miracles.

For me, the biggest scam in mattresses are the pillow tops, which happen to be no-flip.  We had one that started to get impressions so quickly that we were still within the exchange period (90 days I think?).  We traded it for our current and have both been very pleased.

I read his review (and a bunch more) before buying and it is very close to our experience. He gives it a 6 in firmness, I'd give it a 7. Otherwise he's pretty spot-on. He even mentions the edge sag, which is a little worse than on a standard mattress, but it never collapses, and springs right back once you move. It sleeps good in any position, and is great for other things as well. You know, like watching TV.

It feels like a much more expensive mattress. At just over $800/delivered for a queen-size with the 100-day return thing, I thought it was a no-brainer. We actually hung on to the old mattress for about a month, but really never looked back.

Really about all you can do is get one and try it for a couple weeks. You may hate it. But if you do they'll come get it, so you're out nothing but a little mattress moving.

Last time we went mattress shopping I scoured the web to find consistently solid reviews......I couldn't find any. Granted, I was looking at the "big names" at the time, but the reviews on every high-end and medium end mattress all sucked for the most part.

This is an industry that could use a better mousetrap.

Mattresses are very personal. Everyone has a different  idea as to what's comfortable. We have a Sealy Regal something or other. It was basically a copy of a Stearns and Foster set but didn't come with the price fixing that S&F has. If I'm not mistaken Sealy owns S&F. At any rate it is a pillow top on both sides and has served us very well for about 15 years. Buying bedding is a blind purchase, you really don't know what is inside. Kind of like going to the dentist, no real clue as to what he/she is doing in there:huh:

Go to a mattress store and lie down on them.   That's the only way you'll know what you'll like.   But you got to live with it for a bit too.    We ended up with a tempur-pedicure.   But it can get a little warm in the summer.  That suits the wife.   She has a bad back and loved the support.  Our neighbors swear by their sleep number.

Exactly what we always do, but unfortunately, the Sealy Posturepedic and the Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress sets we bought in the last 8 yrs starting heading south in a few months.  As such, I'm wary of buying a mattress like we used to at one time simply because they don't seem to make them last like they used to.

If one is near you, you should check out The Original Mattress Factory. Begun I think in the late 80s by the former CEO of Serta/Sealy. Top shelf build quality and extremely reasonable pricing. Have had great success with them; on year 18 with current King.

Played softball for their travel team for years in the Orlando area.  Amish built wood frame box springs and traditional spring and foam mattresses built to your spec.  I should have mentioned that we replaced our fifteen year old Original Mattress king set with a queen box spring I bought locally and the Casper mattress.  A good friend recommended the Casper.

I hate memory foam.

I had to stay at an Inn for 9 months due to an extended work project in Lake Placid.

All their beds were that expensive memory foam.

I felt like I was molded into it, not laying on it.

I just found this guy's site as we were shopping for new guest bed.  We ended up going with an eLuxury Supply model, honestly because it got good rating and they do good charity work as well as being USA made.  When it's ours, we'll spend more money.  The sleepopolis guy doesn't take ad money or anything, so I like that.

Just bought a Purple. They seem to be a bit back ordered, so it probably won't be here for a month or so. If that doesn't work, I'll probably work my way through the Sleepopolis Best Mattresses of 2016 list (http://sleepopolis.com/best-mattress/); probably the Alexander Hybrid and the Leesa next. I figure it's time to stop bitching about our old crappy mattress and actually do something about it. Almost all of these online mattress offer 3 month trial periods and free shipping and returns, so there's really no reason not to try them out.

No reason not to try, except that it's a total pain in the ass to repackage a mattress to ship it back...
