When cheep beets boo-teek

Everyone needs a delay. I'd been using an Ibanez DE7 delay/echo for a while because it was free, in a pile of stuff someone at the rehearsal warehouse was throwing away. Looked like it had been gnawed on by wolverines. Worked great.

Because I'm a gear whore and have no common sense, I eventually sold it. Tried an Akai Headrush. An MXR Carbon Copy. A Malekko Ekko 616. Too complex, too dark, too bright (in order.) Tried some stuff in stores, but ultimately...

got another DE7. Cheap, tough, doesn't color your sound either on or off, can do the "UFO landing" self-oscillation or space echo or slapback without braking a sweat.

Who else has a "It ain't boo-teek and it's great" piece of kit they swear by? Bet there are a lot of Squire and Danelectro stories here...

Boss SD1 Super Overdrive as a clean boost. Right up there for me and I'm preferring it to my Maxon OD808 right now. It's still queued for a double-stack mod tho :P

I've been using one of these that I bought in mint condition via CL for $15.  Works very well as a preamp boost.

Anyone know a cheap spring reverb pedal, in the $50-60 range?

Someone will! Is this any good? http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Mode-Reverb-Spring-Plate-Gate-Reverse-Digital-Electric-Guitar-Effects-Pedal-/262114028194?hash=item3d0736aaa2:g:MXsAAOSwZVlXqwD5

Used the Ibanez Echo Shifter for a long while. But then I bought a Supa Puss, and it's really so much better sounding, so off with the Echo Shifter. Still a cool unit, for what it is. I also have a home built, (not by me), copy of the Deep Blue Delay that sounds really good. Got it in a trade for something useless I wanted to get rid off.

Working on the same type of project. A friend had one the he bought for $25 and he decided he didn't want to mess with hit. So I bough pots, pickguard and I think i'm just going to nail a pickup to it and go. He asked me what i'm going to do with it and I said gig it. He doesn't believe me.

I've had the same Boss DD3 for 25 years. Got it for $15 at a yard sale  Keeley modded it about 12 years ago.

I have a DD5 and a Wampler Faux Tape Echo that are good delays, but I keep going back to the DD3.

Be patient and wait for a used Boss RV-5 to pop up on CL or Reverb. A very good pedal with several modes, including "Spring".

Okay. there could be a story.

Whenever I visit division HQ for training, I spend an evening at my ex-boss Mike's house for dinner, gab, and trying out the new gear we've acquired since the last visit.   Let's just say that Mike's disposable budget for gear is significantly higher than mine.

Last night, I took my Slammer Series Sunburst with the Gravelin pickups and upgraded Schaller tuners.  Mike loved the neck on it, and was rocking hard through one of his DSL-40 combos.  I was struck by how silly it looked, him sitting there playing my $400 modded Korean Sunburst, next to his rack of five, count 'em... FIVE Gibson Historic R9s and R0s. Upon reflection, I later realized that any ONE of those LPs was worth more that my entire rig of three guitars, two amps, and a bunch o' pedals.  (Mike has similar quantities of PRSs, CS Strats, and booteek amps and effects strewn about.

I also took the opportunity to A/B my newish Mooer Yellow Comp against Mike's real-deal Diamond Junior.  I'm happy to report that the Mooer is damn good by comparison, despite costing 1/3 of what the Diamond does, and I'm happy with the cheaper version.  The point is moot anyway, since the Diamond's larger enclosure and front-mounted jacks prevent it from fitting into the space recently vacated by my old Dyna Comp. Still, it's good to know the Mooer is "close enough".

My first guitar. Had it for 22 years.  Samick valley arts strat made in Korea.    Actually quite the player.  Been rewired four or five times (slightly better each time).  Added the pick guard and dome knobs years ago. Problem is it sorta needs frets now so it's in semi retirement.  With the JB in the bridge it's a sweet rock machine.

When I got back into electric, I bought a Samick Ray Benson valley arts Tele style. That thing was GREAT! A really nice neck and good tones. It simply fed the desire for more and better guitars. I sold it to a local luthier. He uses it as his bench guitar to test repaired amps. That line was really nice.

Always enjoyed Danelectro stuff and never had to break the bank for it.

Dano French Toast octave fuzz. Just awesome 19 bucks

Got one for Christmas. There's a lot of cool in that one little pedal. It bumped a Dano Chili Dog octave off my board (at least for now....).  The Dan-Echo and PB&J are great sounding delays, too.

A real surprise was the Dillion Firebird. With 3 minihums it's the fattest Strat ever and a big reason for selling off a few other really good guitars. New - $300 (strap was extra).

+1 for the Tuna Melt trem pedal, i think i coughed up $25 for mine, slightly used.  And a big +1 for the Super Champ, especially with a Ragin' Cajun.  One of the very few pieces of kit I gigged enough to make my money back on.

Where did you find that for that price? Seen them, thought about one before but $500-$600 range. Nice score for $300.

I had a Danelectric Liquid Metal pedal that was just killer and built like a tank. They were pretty hard to find in the States as almost all were sold just to the British market and I still paid less than 50 bucks for it. Plus 1 on those PB & J delays. Paid maybe 25 bucks tops for that.  That's a whole lot fun for the price.
