I've been on the lookout for a black Newport of any variety for many years. In Kaki's listing of her natural Newport Pro (https://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/104071-psa-hamer-newport-pro-and-check-out-the-seller/), she mentioned that her black one got more use. I couldn't help myself and PMed her saying that if she ever thought about selling that one to please let me know. One thing led to another, and: I love how it's clearly gotten a ton of playing time but still looks beautiful. You can probably see in the 1st pic how Kaki's fierce nails impacted the top. Interestingly it's the lightest of my three and has the most top and bottom end. My Pro Custom has a very mid-focused sound, and the N90 is somewhere in between. What can I say, I'm a lucky guy!

It's coming my way! Should get it by early next week (shipping across the country). I've always wanted to try an Eclipse but never stumbled across one close to me. I like the upgrades on this one, and he is also including the original bridge & pickups. Been Hamer-less for about a year or so, and I'm ready to get back in the saddle!

I can see the appeal to having a guitar store take the shipping risks but here is my thought process. First a HFC member has a chance to purchase the guitar. Those LP type cases are easier to ship. FedEx Offers Pack and Ship for guitars of that size. They provide a box and can professional pack the guitar for around $50. Add the insurance from Fedex of the sale and it brings you to around $125-$175 for shipping, maybe $40 more. Open a free Fedex account and it is less. You can pass the shipping onto the buyer and if FedEx packed it and there is a shipping issue, which I've never had using this method, insurance claim should be easier to collect as they packed it. There maybe options from repair to total reimbursement. I don't feel the same about UPS. I would only ship FedEx. Many of the guitars I've purchased I've supplied the shipping label and asked the seller to use the FedEx Pack and Ship method and either offered my account number or provided funds after it is packed. The rectangle cases can be a different animal. If it's not a fitted case extra packing material is required to keep the points protected and guitar in place. I saw him at the PNC bank arts center with John Mellencamp. IMHO Fogerty stole the show. He was out there with his gear, pretty much swapped guitars every song, and sounded amazing. Also I'm pretty sure he whipped out an EBMM Axis or EVH and started finger tapping at one point. Monster player. Mellencamp was ok, but it was a stage, people dancing, and just.. meh.

1995 Eclipse 12 String... this is the GC eclipse from a month or so ago... plays nice, sounds nice, pretty clean for it's age, frets are in decent shape, not much in the way of physical wear, a few light nicks, but no large dings or chips. Some tarnish on the pickup covers, very light hameritis around the joint. I got it from GC and was a little surprised at the condition, I cleaned up the fretboard, polished the frets restrung and it's really solid. The case looks like a TKL case however it has purple velour and no Hamer logo, it does however fit the guitar perfectly. perfectly cool axe but I like my new FM and bought alot of stuff lately... catch and release on this one. Lastly, the guitar looks cherry in the photos but it almost looks vintage orange imho. SOLD

These were made in Leakesville, where they did the Wolfgangs. Scored the HB version last year from DGS. These are a steal for the quality level.

I have seen John live a few times over the last 20 years. I have been regularly shocked that a guy his age is that nimble and has the strong voice and stamina he does. Whether you're a fan or not, the guy is an American icon, and still brings the talent!

Found a picture of the blonde with the single inlay and also finally found video of the red one, cherry with that weird tailpiece Hamer used. I guess she had four for different tunings.

Nice summary! My '89 chaparral custom isn't flame top but solid 2 piece flame maple body with set neck. I thought it came with SD pus; JB and 2 SSLs which I switched to a tone zone and 2 old Dim. Slammer single coils (my fav single coils!). I'm about to swap out the tz for an old Slammer HB. Anyway, I like the shorter scale ones a lot. I think their proportions might look the best overall to me, but I tend to like the longer scale for a shredder guitar.

Chaparral By ’85 the Strat-style guitar had begun to dominate. Hamer’s crosstown competitor, Dean, had begun to switch from its own upscale Gibson variations to the “superstrat” form, and Kramer was phasing out its ’70s aluminum necks and was well on its way to dominating the American guitar market with its Strat-shaped models. Hamer entered the Strat-style sweeps in ’85 with the introduction of the Chaparral and Chaparral Custom. The Chaparrals had contoured offset double-cutaway mahogany bodies, very Strat-like, but with a slightly larger upper horn. Rock maple necks were glued in and featured Hamer’s droopy six-in-line headstock. Fingerboard scale was 24 3/4″. Both featured the soon-to-be-ubiquitous humbucker/single/single pickup layout, with one volume and one midrange tone contour control. Pickup selection was controlled via three three-way mini-toggles which served as a coil tap on the ‘bucker and reversed phase on the single-coils. The jack was top-mounted, as on a Strat. The Chaparral Custom featured an ebony fingerboard with pearl boomerang inlays. A double-locking Floyd Rose was standard, but a Kahler was an option. The bridge humbucker was a Slammer, but the two single-coils were twin-blades made in West Germany by OBL. The Custom could also be had with an optional flamed maple top. By January ’87 Hamer was also offering a Chaparral Custom Carved-Top. Only a few were made to showcase Hamer’s “custom shop” capabilities. Basically, the Chaparral Custom Carved-Top was a Custom with the top carved into an extra arch. The tops were either quilted or tiger maple. Cost was $1,699.90; the Carved-Top was $2,299.90. The plain Chapparal sported a rosewood board, pearl dot inlays, and a Kahler Traditional vibrato system (Strat-style but with a locking nut). Pickups were Slammers. A few were ordered with three single-coils but they were not production models and are very rare. These first Chaparrals lasted until ’87. In ’87 Hamer revamped the Chaparral, splitting the model into the Chaparral Bolt-On and Chaparral Custom. Both now sported longer 25 1/2″ scales, five-way switches, and side-mounted jacks. Locking Floyd Rose systems were standard, though Kahlers could still be custom-ordered. These were now recessed, by the way, for greater upswing. The Chaparral Bolt-On featured a bolt-on neck and continued to have a rosewood fingerboard and dots. Pickups were still Slammers. The Chaparral Custom remained otherwise essentially the same as before, including a flametop option. The bridge pickup had become OBL by this time.

So last thursday... I posted the GC PSA about their sale... (10% off, plsu 10% GC bucks if you use the credit card, sale ends tonight BTW) friday afternoon, no one jumped on the FM Special and I said, f it, I'll grab that thing as I have a thing for Aztec Gold FM's pretty solid... some fretwear, but very playable. light dings but finish fully intact, no hameritis along the fretboard and I suspect it's a late '93 as the profile is closer to the slightly fuller 94/95's Top nicer than the terrible GC pics and I love that the finish has darkened to a vintage amber. I got a nice surprise when I opened it up... nicely packed with OHSC. so nice I almost wanted to keep the box and the fixins but I left it. good deal.

(I’ve told this story here before, so apologies for the redundancy.) Ugh! Appx 20yrs ago I saw Uli open for MSG in Concord, CA. He was touring his. “Vivaldi: The Four Seasons”, release. After his set he went to the merch table to meet with the fans. I was the last to the table. He was very gracious, and fielded all of my fanboi questions about his 70s gear. I brought along a very nice Carerre Records import CD of “Virgin Killer”/“In Trance” to be signed. Uli flipped thru the liner notes/photos and chanced upon the original, “VK”, cover shot. He frowned and looked totally mortified and shrugged, “ah, well. We were young and stupid then.” (BTW, he signed the cover of, “In Trance.”)

Well, I'm shit outta luck then. The only tribute I can offer is to medicore playing.

For better or for worse, tribute bands have taken over a big chunk of the live music bookings these days. It's a great gig if you enjoy that specific original artist. I've been lucky to fall in with Pink Floyd and Radiohead tributes that draw pretty well, and I still get a kick out of playing that music.

I had a checkboard pickguard on a black Phantom (90's version) - i sold the guitar to someone up here (I think) with a white pearloid guard and I'm pretty sure I threw in he checkerboard guard in the deal. white pearloid on purple works for me.
