So a friend of mine is seling a Hamer Special in red. Someone gets in touch who has a couple of 80s Specials himself. Turns out he's someone I sold a b&w Hamer Special to a couple of years ago. And then I find out he recenlty bought a 1980 Hamer Special in opaque blue with a MATCHING HEADSTOCK from the first owner. I tell him to get get in touch should he ever consider selling it. Guess what, now it's mine. It wasn't cheap but it is in great condition, has had a fret dressing, has a nice medium neck, plays and sounds great. I believe the paint is all original, no undercoat, no other paint in the control cavity or under the trussrod cover). The body contour is slightly different to my 1981 Hamer Special, the lower cutaway less pronounced, so cool, I love it!

So I have been here 20 years and have been playing Hamers since '78. It's been a minute since I had an NHD. Picked this up from Don yesterday on my drive down to Portland. Won't be home to plug it in till tomorrow night, but have been playing it in my hotel room, and this guitar is AWESOME! Not too bad on the eyes either. Thanks Don!

I think I've mentioned this before, it's worth repeating. A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 used 15-20 year old Ibanez, both had really scratchy volume pots. I sprayed both out with Caig DeOxit, both were still scratchy, I cleaned with plastic safe electronics cleaner and then Caig again, still not perfect. I dripped some trumpet valve oil into the pots, and they've been perfect for 2 weeks, I've had similar experience previously with the small EMG pots, - this seems to be more of a thing with the cheaper import pots than CTS. I'll give credit to Pesocaster who told me about this. Before you give up and get out the soldering iron...

This one popped up recently and a blue savoy has been up for a while at 2900 on reverb a couple other savoys, too. The one with the bigsby is attractive but too $$$$$. lastly if anyone needs an avalon check the light color flame on the verb. If still available less on TGP. none of these is quite right for me but still got my eyes open.

In a search for a cheap Telecaster, I bought a Firefly Thinline that turned out to be really well done - and under $200! I've been building these for a while. Just thought I'd offer one here. At this price you cannot build one like this for the same money. So I'm basically recovering the parts money to build something else. Built just like a 1964 ab763 Deluxe Reverb. All premium components. Heyboer Transformers, Sozo Blue Caps. New EH tubes! what I don't get is: the asking prices for import "Hamer" Standards, there's one listed fs near me for $1500, made in Korea, I can't imagine it's any better than a Firefly Destroyer/Explorer style for $219 currently on Amazon ("dude, it's just a decent MIK guitar that says 'hamer' on the headstock). I played this Ibanez ART300 Caiman at church this morning (pretty big nice sound system), it sounded great. Guitars like this turn my preconceptions about price/quality upside down. I paid under $150 used and had to do setup and basic repairs, market value is around $300, so it's kind of in that same category, and a really good guitar, - although the two AA battery preamp is a bit odd.

First repair successful. Stereo jack installed with connection to the battery. Works as it should now. We'll see if the battery drains in a week again but I don't think it will.. Hopefully.

Hamer Juniors and an Ecstasy

Hey Cam, I don't mean to be rude or anything, but are you Andre the Giant-size?

Rufus T has arrived! My 'first 10 minutes' evaluation: Holy shit. How do they do that? Straight off the truck, pulled it out of the box, tuned it up, plugged it in and damn - nice snap from the bridge and Clapton-esque wool from the neck, from strings that sound 40-years-old. Raised the treble-side action a hair. The D-shaped neck felt good, and has enough heft (but not too much) to be comfy. Stays in tune (big plus). All switches, knobs, etc function properly. No glaring cosmetic issues. And it just feels solid, without being heavy. I thought the Tele was really good. This is definitely a notch above that. And it looks cool. The Metallic Green looks really good in person, especially with the gold (I know, I know. I'll put a big 'G' on it) and I'm not a big fan of the color green. A string change and set-up is next. Neck pickup goes from woolly to woollier so that might change, who knows. But the initial hit says it's a keeper

Bizen is a Japanese boutique brand started by the guy who ran the Zemaitis Custom Shop. Their LP type guitars have fat, soft V necks that are to die for. Top shelf woods and components. This Korina Jr. also sports a Brazilian RW fretboard.

No horse in the race, but as a practical consideration for a specifically gigging guitar, wouldn't something like this Korean Standard be a better option? Cost is around 10% of the real deal. Much less anxiety about theft or breakage!
