LucSulla Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Little Richard, Little Richard, Little Richard, and Little Richard. There are a few people before and a score after who I also think are VERY important, but... That fella gets the mountain all to himself.

Don't let it ruin your perfectly acceptable Morrison-bashing. The guy's voice was worse than Robert Plant's and that's saying something! And for the record, I like Zep and The Doors. Well, I sorta like The Doors. Krieger was great.

Steve Haynie Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis... Those 50's guys that set it all in motion for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are deserving of a place on a monument. The art that came along later has its own place, too. Jimi Hendrix went somewhere no one knew you could go with music, but it took those 50's guys to build Jimi's launch pad.

diablo175 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Okay, I'll take a legitimate stab at this: Guitar Mt. Rushmore- Hendrix, Gilmore, Van Halen, Iommi

gorch Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Whitesnake would make it nicely, David sounding like an old rock already.
JohnnyB Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Mentions of Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Elvis...all good. But maybe the George Washington of rock would be Ike Turner. He and his Kings of Rhythm were behind 1951's "Rocket 88," often considered the first rock'n'roll single. It even has distorted fuzz guitar sound (the speaker cone had torn). 19-year-old Ike wrote (or cowrote) the song and played piano on the recording. The band including sax soloist were Ike's Kings of Rhythm. The artist of record was Jackie Brenston. It was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis and Sam Phillips sent the recording up to Chess Records, where they made the artist(s) of record Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats.

It would slight too many others. You may be confusing Deep Purple with Mt. Rushmore, which has only 4 presidents' heads. Point well taken, however. It's not too hard to find four presidents who rise above the insignificant (William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, James Garfield, etc.), the placeholders (Tyler, Chester Arthur, Millard Fillmore, Gerald Ford, etc.), and the clowns, compared to trying to find four rockers who moved the needle when the candidates include Ike Turner, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Hank Marvin, Dick Dale, Brian Wilson, Lennon/McCartney, Clapton, Hendrix, Jagger/Richards, Moody Blues, Santana, Roth/Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, etc. That's about 20 candidates on my list alone. There are definitely not 20 presidents--or anywhere near that number--who belong on Rushmore.

I must've missed that; while I wouldn't have him on my list, I was merely stating he has some redeeming qualities as an artist. No one here did. I was commenting on the photo in the original post.

Biz Prof Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Can someone with Illustrator splice The Victim into that image?
JohnnyB Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 47 minutes ago, gtrdaddy said: OK, I get the others, but why Robert Duval? John Scofield. Brooksie has a well-placed streak of jazz and fusion in him. Here he is flanked by drummer BIll Stewart and electric bassist Steve Swallow. They used to be in vibist Gary Burton's quartet, which was doing fusion years before Miles ever thought of--and claimed credit for--fusion. Burton has quite a track record of spotting future jazz/fusion guitar stars. Other previous guitarists include Larry Coryell and Pat Metheny.
