zorrow Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Which headstock shape do you prefer and why? I made this poll without considering binding specificities, or reverse variants -for example, I know Jim will prolly vote Californian, but specifying he likes reverse ones. Also, I didn't separate the Virtuoso from the A5/Centaura/Diablo/SS and such because the painted borders and slight variations are different aesthetically, but the core design remains the same. Did the same with the two thinner hockeysticks and the two fatter, grouping them in just two types. Non-GT Scepter fall in the fatter hockey stick category. BTW, I think I covered all the styles, but I might have forgotten some. Some pics now, as a guidance, in the order they appear in the poll:
zorrow Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 I voted Daytona. I love the curves and the classic design. If it's reverse, that's even better! I also like Virtuoso's, which would be my second choice, as the matching line with the body color and the reverse variant speak out loud to my eyes:
murkat Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 except for a stock paddle, open book on a blitz, or on a V... All of them are, were pretty darn good. My fav is the D/A on the double cut thou.
cynic Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 The first photo isn't an early Standard. Hamer's paddle headstock is nearly as bad as the Heritage headstock for me. Love the Dan Armstrong, hate the gawdawful stadium logo.
diablo175 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Believe it or not, the Cali head stocks are not my fave. I like 'em well enough but I voted later Standard. The Blitz hockey sticks are even better! Now reverse them and ya got something going there!
Steve Haynie Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 The 12 string bass split headstock says "Hamer" to me. No one else did anything like it.
hamerboy_ Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 ^ What Steve said. I wish my !2 string Chaparral guitar had the split headstock to match my bass. I think I remember seeing a 12 string Standard guitar sporting one somewhere along the way; correct me if I'm wrong. -Bobby

bubs_42 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 My favorite was the Long Vintage Heastock on the Early Sunbursts.
dhuber Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I like the late open book or lips with trim and "Hamer" inlay. Classy!
atquinn Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I didn't vote because it's a tie between the bound paddle headstock (it must be bound!) and the Cali headstock. I like almost all of them though. - Austin
DBraz Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 For me it's the Virt/Cent/A5 headstock. I think it's not only the best shape but looks infinitely better when "backed" by a painted neck or wood other than maple. Cali second.
RobB Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I prefer the early Sunburst/Special 3/sides and the 90's Standard shapes. The original Standard heads are less "clunky", but I feel the later versions were more "Hamer" than the originals.

gorch Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I have voted later hockey sticks since I don't have a 4-digit.

Disturber Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I really like the old cruise bass headstocks. They are just funky cool:

mc2 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I like the Virtuoso headstock on the six strings. The early Standards are also cool. The early thinner shrip fork "V" headstock is a great bass headstock....and the early Standard Bass and early Cruisebass with the larger/longer 60s Epiphone Embassy style headstock was also cool. Ironically, the only Hamer headstock I am not fond of is the most common 3x3 open book used on most of the doublecut models. Then again, the only Hamer inlays I was never fond of were the Victory ones. I think Hamer may have been wiser to use its Boomerang inlays on more models and either resize them smaller or cut them into segments in order to make variations. But that would have at least kept the propriatary Hamer inlay people ID'd the brand with. Not on everything...but at least many more builds.

The boomerang inlay was sonething I identified immediately with bring quintessentially "Hamer".
