I gotta believe that others practice this. There has to be others that have discovered this tactic. If not, I think I might be onto something. Here's how it works: Rather than purchasing new guitars, I take a couple from my current, existing collection and hide/put them away for about a year. Then, break one out again and it’ll be like having a new guitar without having to pay for it.😆 At least, that’s what I did with my Stevenson “Bass boat” Std. 24. I really struggled playing it for whatever reasons, a year ago- it felt like it was fighting me on a number of levels. (let's skip over the psychology; the mental gymnastics and borderline textbook delusion inherent in blaming one's instrument for shortcomings in their skill!) So, I decided to sell it. It went into hiding in the case and in the less used part of the basement. Then ads went up to sell but obviously, it never sold. This morning, I was in the guitar workshop area of the basement and looked at it and decided, WTF! Let’s get it out and have a go on it! Holy weasel wizz! It played and sounded hella better than it did a year ago. It was like having a new guitar. 😆5 points

This reminds me - every time I see a '59 Les Paul on Reverb selling for $250k...with an additional $600 for shipping...I'm offended at the shipping fee.4 points

I did not know it once had a Kahler? Interesting. (Then again, I never listened to P Floyd or Gilmour. Way overrated hippie music. And Waters is a commie). If it is de-Kahlered then it should have lost half it's value. So in reality the buyer got it cheap.4 points

I tried this once, but not with guitars. My wife was PISSED, and apparently had found weight training equipment...3 points

@bubs_42 @Travis @RacerX If anyone in the Chicago area is interested. I can bring these to the Chicago Guitar Expo https://www.dejawuguitars.com/guitar-show-calendar/chicago-vintage-guitar-expo-wedp6 Willing to let these go for well below market prices for an in -person deal. The Anniversary is in near mint condition, 100% original with untouched wiring and perfect frets. As clean as a used black guitar can be. $1,200 w/ Hamer logo HSC The Artist Custom has DiMarzio DP309 PAF 57 pickups but otherwise original. It's in excellent condition with the OHSC. Priced at $2,500 Has some very slight binding seperation in the upper cutaway. It had Duncan Seth Lovers installed when I got it, not sure if these were original. I'll include these for an extra $100.00. I2 points

Maybe 6-7 years ago I had original amp builder send out to get custom tolexed. After that, I basically played amp a few times at home low volumes, bought a shipping case and put down for time being. Tolex brand new. Glorious EL-34 power tubes. Not a lot of playing time. Amp sings like a mighty beast. All original parts. I live NW NJ. I’m leaning toward tree fitty. Strike that. $1,200. With cherry/fire red custom fitted case, which is also new. I can likely ship at cost. I don’t really know how to sell outside of Reverb. I have 119 reviews there. No argument here, either. I actually never made it to the part where this occurs. (I never do. There's not enough fucking time in the day to watch every flotard video that's posted here). He could have used a second, spare nut, glued up a shim and fashioned a new nut. If done right, you wouldn't even see the work and you certainly wouldn't hear it.2 points

Another thing to note is that Jim Irsay was only 65 when he passed away. There are plenty of people his age and older with crap tons of money, as well as people decades younger who some of his collection will appeal too. He didn't just collect guitars either, and things like the first draft of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" were also a part of this auction. Predicted to go at around 2.5 to 5 million, it ended up going for just over 12. His collection is honestly exceptionally well curated and much of it was definitely historically as well as culturally important. For the guitars, he also was a player, and tomorrow it looks like most of the "player" guitars are going up, which also look quite nice, but are only really remarkable in that they were part of the Irsay collection. Which yes, I admit sounds rather odd when there is a Gibson Les Paul 1958 Burst, two 1960 Bursts, and a circa 1971 Flying V as part of the auction. However there's also a lot of "modern" production guitars, including a bunch Martin and Collings Acoustics. I would water the Martin Museum however may also be in the game, as there are some Martins from the 1930s as well.2 points

Are there that many van Gogh fans today? Prices for his paintings are still high. The art world has been trained to believe that some objects are worth more than others. The guitar collectors of the future will need to have something of the same way of thinking to uphold the values paid in this recent auction. Irsay's rock star owned guitars will always be promoted as iconic. They have to in order to justify the price. Are there people buying Bing Crosby or Ella Fitzgerald music today? Yes. They just do not have the appeal, and sales, they once did. They were incredibly important in their day, so they will always be heralded as "icons." How many people are collecting Crosby and Fitzgerald memorabilia? The Hollywood collectors are still paying six figure amounts for dresses worn by famous actresses like Audrey Hepburn even though fewer and fewer people recognize her. Just enough people with money still do. Gilmour's Strat might as well be a non-fungible token now. There will always be someone viewing Pink Floyd on a legendary level.2 points

US$4995 is a bit too steep for my wallet nowadays, I've had a few Standards and Standard Customs in the past, and the size of the guitars made me paranoid that I'd accidentally smack it into furniture or a wall or something else, so I don't have them anymore. Besides, I find that I can play just as badly on a $500 guitar as I can on a $5000 guitar.2 points

UPDATE: We did the plane and refret. Still for sale, just updated price to to $999 plus shipping to account for the work: https://www.guitarmalfk.com/shop/c/p/Robin-Freedom-II-x95909696.htm Check out this Very Good+ condition Robin Freedom II bass in Robins Egg Blue?? (prob Surf Green). This one has had the works - new ElectroSocket output jack plate, HipShot triple string tree, new bone nut and a complete plane and refret as the neck was wavy-gravy unplayable when we first got it. We opted for a satin nitro finish on the neck versus a gloss. This appears to be an early import model (ESP-build) based on tilt neck, skunk stripe and that it originally had a two-string round string tree, but we can't pinpoint anything definitively. Original body finish, pickups, internal electronics - sounds HUGE and plays very, very good. The humbuckers are something else. Very articulate and punchy. Neck is clean as it gets, frets are perfect. Body shows some light wear - a few divots and dings - but is extremely clean considering this one is at least 30 years old. No case or gigbag, but will be packed accordingly if shipping. $999+shipping Original post: Heya! I know we've got some Robin fans here. I have a Very Good+ cosmetic condition Robin Freedom II bass in Robins Egg Blue?? (prob Surf Green) for sale. We bought it from a repair customer who just wanted out from under it after he saw the repair quote. That was after we had already put on a new ElectroSocket output jack plate, HipShot triple string tree and a new bone nut. So it does have that going for it! Looks great, sounds great, BUT - after a fret dress, we still couldn't get the buzz ironed out. Neck is a bit wavy-gravy and it will need plain and refret to play right. Anyways, our repair shop has gotten too busy to work this one in without sacrificing timelines on customer work, so we're looking to move it along to one of you fine folks! Customer indicated it was an early import model (ESP) based on tilt neck, skunk stripe and that it originally had a two-string round string tree, but I can't pinpoint anything definitively. $shipped/payment method of your choice. No case or gigbag, but will be packed accordingly. More pics available upon request.1 point

I saw this the other day on Reverb. Seem this seller has a stock of old Hamer DiMarzio pickups. Price is nice on em too. I got one set. they measure HOT 16k for the bridge & 12k for the neck. Probably intended for / came out of a late 80's Scarb/Vector/Blitz. three wire hookup. not affiliated... Hamer 103 1990 - Black vintage by dimarzio | Reverb1 point

that looks great! Sort of a 'super champ' type thing: single octal, but 6L6 instead of 6V6 I wonder if those would take the older 6L6GA or GB tubes? those can be very low cost for vintage tubes. Blackstar (and Vox) is supposedly owned by Korg, which is not a bad thing.1 point

I got one too. Not that I needed one, but I have before, so it could happen again. 🤪 They also have their discontinued rack cases for some decent prices. If you're into that sort of thing.1 point

I can certainly see lubing, but filling the slots and recutting the slots - what is contacting the string is no longer nylon, right? I am not arguing either way here. I just think it is odd that if you want 6/4 nylon, I assume that's because you think that makes a difference. Great. But then why not use a blank and actually have 6/4 nylon. Why reuse a nut, fill the slots, and recut it? Or is the point not at all about what is contacting the string? I'll leave it alone from here. I just thought the whole operation contradicted itself. The net result is far better than I could ever do, so good on him. And a gorgeous guitar.1 point

For what it's worth tuning stability isn't nearly as much of an issue on my guitars with a 14 degree angle, including a Les Paul. As far as I can tell, it makes fuckall difference with sustain as well. The partscaster I built doesn't have string trees because the neck is a roller nut neck off a Fender 40th Anniversary. I've gigged that guitar several times and ended up playing all night because I completely out of blind luck made a really good partscaster. It only struck me the other day that the strings run damn near straight from saddle to peg with just enough break angle that the nut does its job. Sustains just fine.1 point

Don't be confused. Lubing the string slots is just SOP. I use Burt's Bees lip balm or Lizard Spit Slick Nutz. "Takes the 'PING' Outta Yer String."1 point

And to think how put out we get when we see a vintage Hamer that's been 'de-Kahlered.' 🤣1 point

Eddie and others had decked Floyds with springs adjusted to hold the trem stable for at least a whole step bend. With floating FRs, it doesn’t matter if, “the springs are tension-ed properly.” It will pitch forward. It’s the compromise for playing stunt-guitar. I’ve heard of some players using their picking hand to hold a floating bridge stable during bends. Seems like a PITA, but impressive none the less.1 point

Thanks! I didn't know it was called that. Can't remember where I learned it, but it's an absolute game-changer. Makes me wonder how many guitars with 'tuning issues' I shouldn't have sold.1 point

Fair warning, building teles can be addictive. Nice job on your first build, looks like a great guitar. Saul, Mojotone makes good wiring kits and they don't take nearly as long to ship. I find the four way switch option a versatile way to go. https://mojotone.com/products/pre-wired-tele-4-way-mod-guitar-wiring-harness?variant=416897927742401 point

Blackstar makes some great sounding amps... but .... if they stop making that great sound they are a sum of a gum to repair! Most parts are tiny surface mount examples. Hot air gun, high magnification and a really steady hand required!! The less expensive models just go to the bin...0 points

I told this guitar story here quite some time ago. Had a new Fender Telecaster ordered from a guitar store and after some delays it finally showed up. It was finished white but there was some yellow staining on it, from what I do not know but it came that way from Fender so........... I asked for a refund as I found another Tele at another store. The owner assured me he could get me another within a week and he would knock a little off the price as well, so I said OK. He said he had an old 50's gold top Gibson Les Paul that just came in and I could use that till my guitar came in. Well, a week and some days went by and still no Tele so I said I want me money back and he said hey just keep that old used Gibson if you want it and we will call it square, so I said good, sounds fair to me. Sometime later he asked could I return the guitar and he would refund all my money, I wanted to keep it as it played and sounded great, this guitar had P-90 pickups BTW. A kid brought that guitar in apparently and sold it to the store for a cash, it was his father's guitar that he had taken and sold. I reluctantly agreed to bring it back; I loved that guitar and wished I could have kept it and still think about it today but.................you can finish the rest of the story.0 points

The man took $2,800 of my money in August 2024. I've not received one photo or any updates since. When I called him out, he ghosted me. I'll never see the guitar or my money. He said I could have store credit, but at Suggested Retail. Fuck him.0 points
