Pics of famous guitarists playing guitars different than the ones they're known for?

It just goes to show that it wasn't the gear that made these guys great. They made great music with just about anything you placed in their hands.

True dat. I forget who, but I recall someone once saying that you could hand any guitar to Van Halen, and he would sound like Van Halen.

I think it was Van Halen.

The story I remember was that Ted (Nugent) wanted to know what Eddies magic box was. So he plugged into his rig and commented that it still sounds like "me"

I heard the same thing regarding Joe Pass. He developed a relationship with the Jazz Master when he was sequestered at Synanon to kick heroin. The facility had a single guitar, a Jazz Master.

Then there's His Purple Badness:

And here's Pat Metheny on a solid body:

For the Cat Scratch Fever album Ted used a Strat on Workin' Hard Playin' Hard. It still mostly sounds like his Byrdland, though. You can hear three guitars on that song.

Brian May is known for his Red Special, which he plays 99% of the time. However, he has already played other guitars:1982_flyingv.jpgbrian11.jpgbrian_1986_telecaster.jpg693177.img_1366615435.jpg

Any pics of other iconic guitarists playing other than their iconic guitars?

That a Washburn May's playing on zhe second pic? Brand can't be that bad... :-)

Wasn't Gilmour's neck on the Black Start replaced with a Charvel neck sporting a fake Fender logo?

In my favorite version of Comfortably Numb, Gilmour plays a Charvel:

He looks like Dim from "A Clockwork Orange" in that pic.

Yes, I know he used one live on Money for Nothing, but he will never be associated with it.

I had no idea!

zorrow, is that a Hoyer?

Perhaps, but if it is, that's a custom. The inlay at the 12th fret and the headstock shape are not like that in "normal" Hoyers.

Image link says "Greco-AK1400-in-1978".

Here is another:

Yes indeed - that pic is from a 77-78 Japanese tour. Most acts touring over there were thrown Japanese guitars for visibility. Ace also played some Greco & Ibanez stuff during their '76-77 tour(s).

EVH with a Dean V! He mentioned that early on he used an LP for last songs, encores because his Charvels were so out of tune by then.

Second thought, what's with the pickguard/bound top? DeanV with an added guard? Resprayed Ibby V with binding? Did Gison have their Heritage V reissues in the late 70s?

It doesn't look like a Dean V to me. Looks more like a Gibby, but the input jack is at the "wrong" place -inner side of the lower wing.
