cmatthes Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6785645/scott-weiland-stone-temple-pilots-deadI mean, I think we all knew it was inevitable, but...
JGravelin Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 He battled against himself for a long time and I guess the wrong 'him' won. And that's really sad.RIP.
RobB Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Well, that's sad. Just couldn't stay ahead of the partying, poor guy.I remember my hipper-than-thou alterna-friends used to give me such SHIT about liking STP, AIC, etc. I still defend those guys. Maybe not as "real" as The Melvins (or some such), but I like heavy pop rock, so, what's not to like?RIP, Scott. Sorry you couldn't make it out.

mc2 Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Great singer.....but I expected this news years ago with his monkeys.Still a shame.
Studio Custom Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Inevitable I suppose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOZ1SzOk7vI
cmatthes Posted December 4, 2015 Author Posted December 4, 2015 We saw STP a few months ago with Chester Bennington - he was good, they were great, but it wasn't anything like the times I saw the band with Scott. What a great talent, lost/squandered.
MCChris Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 We don't say talent is wasted or squandered when artists die of cancer. Therefore we shouldn't say it when an artist succumbs to addiction.Every junkie's like a setting sun. Now the light is out.

Sugartune Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 We don't say talent is wasted or squandered when artists die of cancer.Yes we do.
tommy p Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Yeah, I opened FB this morning and several of my musician friends has posted the news. I recently read his ex-wife's book which was pretty bleak, but when I heard that Bennington was out of STP I hoped that Scott might get his old gig back and interested to see what they might come up with. Very sad.
G Man Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 He was my age, indeed too young to die. Too bad he couldn't deal with his demons.

Now the light is out.Every time we still hope these people can pull out of it and turn themselves around. Aerosmith should have as many deceased members as Lynyrd Skynyrd, but it looks like they got past their addiction problems.
MCChris Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Every time we still hope these people can pull out of it and turn themselves around. Aerosmith should have as many deceased members as Lynyrd Skynyrd, but it looks like they got past their addiction problems. The frustration and anger are understandable when an addict is unwilling or unable to seek or accept treatment. Similar would be someone who receives a cancer diagnosis and refuses treatment, choosing instead to let nature take its course. Also, as we all know, there are cancer patients who do receive treatment, yet still die. Same goes for addicts. It's brutal stuff, and it's always sad to see somelike like Scott succumb. And I thought Velvet Revolver was friggin' excellent. Never understood the lukewarm reception, and in some cases the outright dislike, for them.
cmatthes Posted December 4, 2015 Author Posted December 4, 2015 I really dug VR. Not sure why they didn't make it big, especially since they were really solid live.
seeker Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I really dug VR. Not sure why they didn't make it big, especially since they were really solid live.Would live to have seen them live. Don't get it either. However, I would drastically remix their first album.

And I thought Velvet Revolver was friggin' excellent. Never understood the lukewarm reception, and in some cases the outright dislike, for them. I had a friend who rode crotch rockets from Tampa to Lakeland for work most days. And of course weekends he'd go off with friends on bike rides. I don't like I-4 (The shitstorm if a highway between the two cities) even in a car so I asked him why he did it. He said he knows he's going to die and he knows how he's going to die, it's just a matter of when. I'm sure Scott looked at it the same way since he never finished rehab. I thought of both of them when I watched this video this morning.
soli'd Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 They're just saying he died of cardiac arrest in his sleep, there isn't any report of drug-related death so far. I lost a close buddy of mine three years ago this weekend the same way; we all ran hard for a number of years, and years later some of our bodies handled it better than others. Even though in recent years moderation was the name of the game, he was 40 and he just didn't wake up one day.

Disturber Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I really dug VR. Not sure why they didn't make it big, especially since they were really solid live.Would live to have seen them live. Don't get it either. However, I would drastically remix their first album.VR didn't have the songs, and that's a real good point about the mix.First album really good. Second album pretty unlistenable due it being compressed to death in the mastering. First album also heavily compressed - not as bad as the 2nd album. I think the mix in itself is okay. But if these two albums could be remastered to sound as dynamic and great as Guns Chinese Democracy then they would sound killer and be so much better. Still, saw them two or three times and they were killer every time. Blew Axl's version of GnR out of the water.
princeofdarkness56 Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I would not put a person with cancer in the same light as a drug abuser. Cancer patients don't ask for cancer unless they are smokers. Substance abuse is tragic but it is a self inflicted wound. You can't abuse yourself with the stuff Weiland did and for as long as he did and expect a happy ending.
Biz Prof Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I've been in a fitness mode since September, after having gained 20-25 pounds during grad school--the sequel. When I'm on the treadmill, I usually warm up and jog to STP. I like their music much more today than when it was new. Weiland was so incredibly perfect for that band that it floors me. To say that it is a waste of opportunity seems to be fitting evaluation.
