proxmax Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Hamer PRS the Heritage Parker Suhr Nik Huber Tandler Hartung ...are the brands i like. PRS ist a great brand and the best sounding and playable guitar i ever owned is my McCarty with solid rosewood neck from 2005.
jwhitcomb3 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I figured I'd start diggin' PRS after I passed the bar, but I guess I'm not a real lawyer yet.
polara Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think most brands make some good instruments, no real hatin'. I've never been a fan of Dean's advertising: being raised by s single mom and being a dad to a daughter, I dunno... the boobies ads seemed kind of juvenile and even offensive. Not into Steinbergers because they just feel weird to me but I admire the engineering. I had a dislike of PRS just 'cos of the nĂ¼ metal lawyer thing and I still think the cult of Paul is weird and the fancy trimmings are just too much. Then I got a CE24 in great shape for under a grand, no "10" top, just dots on the neck. The thing stays in tune forever, gets loads of sounds, is just... the single best all-around electric I've ever picked up in terms of being a tool for gigging.
DaveL Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 The ones that immediately spring to mind are the hideous reverse v's and explorers, (completely pointless, pun intended) they can go straight into the furnace.Any Gibson guitar of the month can get fucked too especially if it's been relic'ed.No PRS ever did it for me but I don't hate them just don't want one.Never played a Huber but their pricing repels me. someone is trying to sell one of those hideous reverse V's on our local craigslistand the f-er is having such bad luck he now disguises his posts so you don't know it'sa reverse V... you know when you have to put "unique" in the header you'rereally in tough shape. I don't like heritage's, they have a following, especially the one's who recommendbuying one instead of a les paul, except when you have to sell it, and you're lookingat a sub hamer resale value (see also carvin)
Jakeboy Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Current USA Gibsons. My Hamers have such better fit and finish .....playability too. Also PRS.....and I don't know why.....
it's me HHB Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think if you bought a reverse V you should be stuck with it as a penalty
fractal Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Why all of the Heritage hate? Just curious...I think the headstock and offering pretty much the same line as Gibson dosen't help. I can get the headstock (I don't find it offensive though), but you know that they WERE Gibson, right? It totally makes sense that they build what they know. In fact, I'm more offended that Gibson offers the same line as Gibson.
proxmax Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 gibson would wish to have the same old quality heritage has.people buy gibsons just for the name, not for the quality.the expensive product lines are ok again, but not for the price.
rj2858 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 TeiscoCheckmateEkoAnd anything else that kids like me were forced to play because their parents didn't think that guitar was an instrument worth spending decent money on. Also anything "reliced" like Nash.
Dasein Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I'm a purist -- Fender/Gibson - USA ONLY w/ the exception of early 80's MIJ Fender Squire.Hamer USA ONLY -PRS -- only early USA made onesNever:Ibanez -- w/ the exception of lawsuit era Jazz BassesDeanPeaveyCarvinMusic ManMaybe -- as in probably not unless something crazy happenedJacksonEverything else --- probably not ---What I want:Really nice USA stratocaster of appropriate vintage --- custom shop relic'd anything you can shove up your assTele -- same as above4 digit standardHamer specialhamer jr.... actually a whole lot of Hamer..... killerteddybear Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Never warmed up to ESP or Jackson...But not really repelled by anything.
FGJ Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 On my no-good-reason-to-dislike list:Most importsESPIbanezSchecterSome Ernie Ball itemsSome PRSAnything with fetish inlays, i.e., e.g., vines, animals, gothic icons, etc.Anything that looks like it would be featured in a movie about the future.Anything with sharp points.Anything that looks like it would be played at a human sacrifice. Most guitars with too many knobs, switches, buttonsAny guitar with on-board electronics requiring a batteryAnything with really weird headstocksAny guitar with anything digital built into it.Cheap, Chinese Crap. (I figured I would sandwich my list with my irrational dislike for imports)
santellavision Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I can't believe Heritage made some lists. Wow, just sayin'.
The Shark Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I can't believe Heritage made some lists. Wow, just sayin'.I tried to love 'em. I've owned about fifteen that come to mind. Had numerous Gary Moore models. They were really well built, but SO DAMN HEAVY. Just ruined them for me.
RichRS6 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think if you bought a reverse V you should be stuck with it as a penaltyPretty sure most people who bought them are stuck with them forever.
proxmax Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 my heritage weights 9.2 lbs not weight relieved... not too heavy imho.
BillW Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Oh my, do I feel an old school HFC beatdown a comin' from my reply !This is a no beatdown zone - a friendly confessional.I have had a few Parkers, and I love them. You will notice that Parker is not on my list. I lusted for one of those new Dragonflys for a bit, but fortunately they priced them in the realm of stupid.Kizanski has some deep feelings for Belew and his performances which I suspect may bleed into some feelings about Parker. Then again, it may not, which is why I phrased it as a question. That orange is HOT. I love it.Yeah - I agree. I'm a huge copper finish fan (and that is close enough to copper IMHO) and that thing looks pretty fly to me (pun intended)
Feynman Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 my heritage weights 9.2 lbs not weight relieved... not too heavy imho. This is a beautiful example, but I fall for it too often. Heritage photos that cut off the headstock often draw me in. Edited to add: I think my intentions with this thread are clear, but just in case... it's a lighthearted chat intended to be fun and amusing. I think it is safe to say that our opinions here don't apply to the respect and understanding we feel for other people's guitar bonds and desires. We all love guitars, so we are all friends.
crunchee Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think if you bought a reverse V you should be stuck with it as a penalty Pretty sure most people who bought them are stuck with them forever. Hey, I'd pay Tree Fitty for 'em! I'd play the 'Lawn Darts' just for the repulsion factor alone.
django49 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I guess I am easy. Not too many brands repel me. Now there are more than a few guitars that are repelled by my playing. And I can understand aversion to certain brands, esp when they evolve into something more than a "player's tool".I am a sucker for great workmanship and "fancy" wood. No doubt coming from my experience working with wood and seeing what it takes to turn something into a "work of art". Or at least something a wee bit outta the ordinary. Explains, at least in part, my appreciation of Hamers......But also the dread PRSi and some of the higher end "state of the art" imports.Pretty does not necessarily make a good guitar (playability, sounds, etc). And sometimes being too pretty (or pricey) translates into "case queens" rather than actual sweet sounds on the stage. Been there. Trying to complete my move beyond that mind set.But I do think there is some correlation between the extreme high level of craftsmanship that goes into making a "piece of art" and the attention to detail that makes a great sounding and playing guitar. Some such as Walker, Huber, Hartung, Fibenare, etc go way beyond good IMO, but they are pricey as hell.FWIW, some recent exposure to some newer PRSi have changed my prior reluctance to consider one. And while they can be over the top (including on pricing!) there are good options at "reasonable" prices too.Innovation (new ideas) CAN be good, but is no guarantee. Parker is an example. My first was one of three that I rotated some years ago when "playing out" regularly. (The others being a not quite stock Hamer Artist and a PRS Swamp Ash Special). I still have one, but I traded up to a Mojo with a "real" wood body. Better.Heritage.....Had a LOT of them back when. Liked some better than others, but was very fond of the archtops. Got rid of all but one fairly rare flat top (Martin D-18 like) and one jazz box (550c) which I actually kept while letting a Gibson Super 400, two Super Eagles and other high end models go away.Carvin.......Can do without, though I had 3 nice examples of one of their much older 335 style guitar models that was very good value. What DOES repel me? Pretty much any sort of "shredder". Just not me. Even if there are some playing similarities with the Parker Fly.....Slim and fast neck.
proxmax Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 for all those PRS bashers.... PRS CU24 Artist 1pc top - 2008 NAMM model

Speak for yourself. The only criterion on which I judge people is whether they have the same taste in guitars that I do.
